How to paint frames. How to paint a wooden window. Painting a wooden window in several layers

The appearance of windows for any building has great importance, and especially for a residential building. Clean, neatly painted frames and the right color make even the simplest facade attractive. In order for the windows to always look like new, it is necessary not only to follow the application technology, but to correctly choose the composition. Among huge assortment LKM, figuring out which window paint is better is not at all easy, and therefore we will take a closer look at the main types of paints, their characteristics and the most popular brands.

When choosing a coloring composition for wooden windows, one should take into account not only the properties of the tree, but also the operating conditions of the material. External frames all year round are exposed to atmospheric influences, tolerate sharp fluctuations in temperature, and are susceptible to sunlight. Dirt and dust gather on them more strongly, which means that they have to be washed more often, as a result of which the paint layer is gradually erased and loses its original smoothness and shine.

The wooden surface is prone to deformation and cracking, which also affects the integrity of the coating. Based on this, we can distinguish the main criteria for choosing a paint:

  • high water resistance;
  • frost resistance;
  • coating strength;
  • resistance to microorganisms (especially fungi);
  • resistance to abrasion and fading.

As for toxicity, the requirements here are not too strict: since the paint is applied outside, harmful fumes quickly disappear and do not harm a person. Additionally, the coating must be moderately plastic so that microcracks do not form during the thermal expansion of the frame.

Please note - it is not necessary to paint both doors in the same shade.

Types of paints for outdoor work

On the this moment for painting windows on the outside, alkyd, acrylic and oil compositions are used.

Alkyd paints

it universal formulations on a pentaphthalic and glyphthalic basis, containing natural oils. They do not dry for a very long time (about a day), have elasticity, perfectly tolerate frosts and temperature changes - from -50 ° С to + 60 ° С. After drying, a very durable smooth coating with water-repellent properties is formed. The color palette is very wide, the paints are sold already tinted and completely ready for application. Solvent and white spirit are used as a solvent. Average paint consumption is 100-180 g/m2.

Due to the presence of resins and oils in the composition, alkyd paint very effectively protects wood from burning out, swelling and temperature deformations. Insect pests also bypass such surfaces, which prolongs the life of windows. Subject to the staining technology, the service life is about 5 years. Disadvantages - the presence of toxic and combustible substances.

Acrylic paints

Water-soluble paints with polymers. They do not contain harmful fragrances, as a result of which they do not have a pungent odor and are considered the most environmentally friendly. Due to the high content of polymers, they are resistant to fading and weathering. Acrylic paint withstands repeated freezing well, can be wet cleaned, has long term service - up to 7 years or more, subject to the staining technology. It is easy to apply, dries very quickly, painted surfaces can be renewed without first stripping the coating. Average consumption is 120-150 g/m2.

Oil paints

They are suspensions of pigments on drying oil. Such paint forms a durable waterproof film on the surface, resistant to negative temperatures and atmospheric influences. It is also resistant to chemically aggressive substances, abrasion, does not fade in the sun for a long time, and has a high hiding power. The color palette includes more than 100 options.

Consumption, on average, is 100-150 g per square meter, and if the base material is too porous, then about 200 g/m2. Drying oil is used for breeding, as well as turpentine and white spirit, but not more than 5% of the total amount of paint. Despite a lot of positive properties, oil paint is less in demand than alkyd and acrylic, and the reason for this is short term operation - from 1 to 3 years, as well as a long drying period - from 24 to 48 hours. In addition, this composition contains flammable substances and has a sharp unpleasant odor.

Basic rules for using paints

Coloring tool

There are three options for applying paint - brush, roller and spray gun. When painting bindings and frames, the roller is not very convenient, so it remains to choose between an airbrush and a brush. As a rule, the manufacturer indicates the method of application on the paint packaging, since the spray method is not suitable for some formulations. If both tools can be used, consider the following factors when choosing:

Ambient conditions

In order for the paint to be firmly and evenly fixed on the surface of the frame, it must be applied at a temperature of +5 to +30 degrees. This condition is mandatory for almost all types of paints, with the exception of special heat-resistant compounds. But the most optimal temperature is considered to be in the range of 18-23 degrees above zero.

Humidity also matters. As a rule, staining is carried out in dry weather, at a relative humidity of 50-60%. For water-dispersion paints, this figure can increase up to 80%, but no more. In addition, the humidity of the air must remain the same as long as the surface dries. The higher its value, the longer the paint will dry, and the higher the possibility of various defects.

It is undesirable that during painting straight lines fall onto the surface. Sun rays. If it is not possible to shade the windows with something from the sun, you need to paint on a cloudy day or in the late afternoon, when the surface will heat up less. Well, of course, you can not start painting in windy weather, otherwise everything will be covered with dust and small particles of debris.

Number and thickness of layers

If you only need to refresh the window, and the color of the paint matches the color of the previous coating, one coat is enough. Especially if the paint has a high covering ability. If you need to repaint in a different color, you will need at least 2 layers, otherwise the base will shine through. 2-3 coats are needed for raw new wood or material in need of major restoration.

You can not apply paint in a thick layer in the hope of achieving a deep color at a time. This provokes the formation of streaks, sagging and other defects that show through perfectly after drying. In addition, such a coating dries longer, and its strength leaves much to be desired. Therefore, the paint is applied in a very thin layer and well rubbed into the base.

Instructions for painting a wooden window

Consider how to properly paint an ordinary window without removing the frame.

Step 1. Remove platbands, gratings, decorative elements- anything that gets in the way. If the window is in good condition, the frame and bindings are simply processed sandpaper medium grit, if the old coating is cracked and peeled off, you need to remove it to the ground.

Advice. Three methods are applicable here - clean everything with a metal scraper or brush, heat it with a hairdryer and remove the old paint with a spatula, and treat the surface with a chemical remover. The choice depends on how strong the coating is.

Step 2 The integrity of the structure is checked, the damaged areas are cleaned with a knife and sealed with putty on wood. After drying, the puttied areas are sanded with sandpaper.

Step 3 The frame cleaned of dust is covered with an antiseptic primer. If the surface is highly absorbent, it is advisable to prime in two layers.

Step 4 Tape or masking tape seal the fittings on the sashes, close the perimeter of the glass. Thoroughly stir the paint, if necessary, dilute it with a solvent.

Step 5. They take a narrow brush, dip up to half the length of the pile into the paint and carefully apply it to the frame, starting from the top. Movements are performed along the jumpers: horizontal elements are painted from side to side, vertical ones from top to bottom. The paint is well rubbed into the wood so that there are no streaks left.

Step 6 After applying the first layer, you need to wait for the paint to dry (the time is indicated in the instructions on the package), and then repeat everything in the same sequence.

After finishing painting, you need to immediately remove the strips of adhesive tape from the glass. This should be done very carefully so as not to get dirty and not leave marks on the frame. While the window is drying, you can paint the trim.

  • process wood;
  • paint in the desired color;
  • determine the cost of painting wooden windows.

Inspection before work

In order to start painting the window, it is necessary to inspect and identify how damaged the frame is. It is possible to paint a new wooden frame without any problems, and it will take a lot of effort, time and money to reconstruct the old one. It is necessary to clean the frame from the peeling coating, putty holes, cracks, rotted places and treat it with impregnation before painting.

Tool kit

To get rid of the old coating in such cases, they resort to mechanical and technical methods.

Mechanical methods include:

  • solvents;
  • washes.

Building hair dryer

And for the technical ones:

  • building hair dryer, scrapers, knives;
  • spatulas different sizes;
  • , nails, glazing beads;
  • grinder and sandpaper of different grain sizes;
  • soil mixture for wood, coloring material to choose from.

Preparing the window structure before applying the coloring base

How to paint wooden windows with peeling paint? We approach this issue in .

Be sure to select appropriate weather conditions for installation work. Excessive humidity and sweltering heat is useless. For convenient restoration of the frame, it is better to remove it and put it in a horizontal position.

You can remove the dilapidated coating with a building hair dryer. Under the action of hot air, the coloring base melts and moves away from the surface in layers. With the help of a spatula, the departed layer is removed.

Removing old paint

It is important to guide the spatula along the grain of the wood to avoid damage to the material. In places where it will be more difficult to get rid of residues, you can use a wash or a special solvent. When applied special liquid in inaccessible places we wait about 30 minutes. And with the help of a spatula or knife, carefully remove the dissolved residues.

The next stage is to level the surface, cover the cracks and places that have rotted from time and natural conditions with putty. If the defects are deep enough, it is necessary to apply it in several stages. You need to get rid of old glazing beads, because these are the most vulnerable parts of the window. Sanding the frame until smooth smooth surface. For polishing take grinder and sandpaper with different grain coatings: large and small.

It is very important! Soil mixtures contain disinfectants or an antiseptic that prevents the development of a variety of bacteria. The primer envelops the object with a film, with the help of which any coloring matter fits perfectly. Soil mixtures prolong the life of windows at times.

The last stage of polishing ends with fine-grained paper. The design is ready, treated with a primer.

Coloring

The operation with the primer is finished, we are waiting for complete drying.

And, finally, the most pleasant moment. Color selection and staining . And what kind of paint is better to paint wooden windows, because the choice coloring coatings just huge?

Most important point- decide on the desired shade. But this is not the most difficult. It is worth considering what paint is better to paint wooden windows, because each is good in its own way. For interior work, it is advisable to choose less harmful paints such as acrylic. They are based on water and acrylates, so they do not emit harmful substances and are practically odorless. In terms of wear resistance, they are the most durable, but quick-drying, unlike other coloring coatings. The ideal color lasts for years and does not require frequent renewal.

Painting process wooden window

The acrylic coating acts like an elastic film. He is not afraid of humidity, heat, sudden changes in temperature. In addition, the coating is water-repellent. In terms of safety, it deserves to be ranked first.

Both foreign and domestic paints from manufacturers are perfect for coloring wood:

  • Enamel Livna - acrylic white. Apply to wood, metal, plastic.
  • Novosibirsk is perfectly white. Environmentally friendly material, applied to any surface. Color can be added: Monycolor, NCS, RAL.
  • Enamel on wood Rezolux Profi for external and internal works. Waterproof and elastic, semi-glossy, breathable, frost-resistant. Dries in 2 hours.
  • Enamel on wood, acrylic semi-gloss VGT VD-AK-1179.

For painting window frames, as mentioned above, we choose a day with good weather because painting is carried out in several stages:

  1. The first time we coat with a more liquid layer to fill the remaining defects. acrylic enamel on the water based must be diluted with a special substance. After drying on wooden surface it acquires the same film effect.
  2. The second layer is necessary for better staining and intense color.
  3. We finish the work with the third layer.

Acrylic paint can be used for both outdoor and indoor use.

Variety of paint choices for window frames

Painting the outside requires a slightly different approach, a minimum of three coats, with a waiting painting step, as conditions outside are much harsher. From the street side, window frames are coated with alkyd paint for outdoor use. This type of paint is specially designed for outdoor work, its basis is alkyd resin. It has a sharp smell and medium wear resistance. Dries from 1 to 10 hours, depending on the manufacturer. Service life up to 7 years.

The following coloring materials are suitable for these types of work:

  • Enamel "Duf Retail Glyants" (Düfa Retail GLANZ). It is used for external and internal works, protects and decorates the coatings of any structures.
  • Enamel "Dufa Hochglanzlack" alkyd glossy (Dufa Hochglanzlack), for outdoor and interior work. It has a sharp smell, glossy, withstands various weather changes, there is a film effect.
  • "Tikkurila Euro Miralkid 90" - high gloss alkyd enamel. Versatile, great for wood and metal. Oil paint made from olive oil. It has a pungent odor, emits harmful fumes, dries for a long time, and has a service life of up to 5 years.

Windows are an important part of any home, and they, like walls, floors, ceilings, need periodic repairs. How to paint wooden windows, what tools and materials will be needed for this, what rules must be observed when working? After all high-quality painting will extend the service life, save the frames and housing from the penetration of insects and bacteria, improve the microclimate in the house.

Coloring compositions

Wooden windows are regularly exposed to negative influences. environment whether it be rain, snow, wind, heat or frost. Therefore, they need constant care. The frame will become more resistant to negative factors if it is properly painted. And for this you need a reliable high-quality paint.

Window painting outside should be done once every 1-2 years. Even the highest quality coloring composition will not last longer.

There are a number of requirements for window paint:

  • moisture resistance (moisture in the form of precipitation should not harm wooden structures, the liquid contributes to the development of putrefactive processes, the formation of mold, which will significantly affect the health of residents of a house or apartment);
  • elasticity (the tree can shrink, swell, but the coloring composition must remain intact during these processes).

For structures that are on the shady side, dark tones can be preferred.

When choosing a paint, be guided by the type of wood from which the frame is made, and climatic conditions in your area.

Oil formulations are used for processing wooden structures in places with a mild climate. For weak wood species, unstable to external influences, in addition to coloring compositions, protective varnishes are used.

Old wooden windows are best painted with glossy enamel, distinguishing feature which is weather resistance. This paint can be used both inside and outside.

Painting technology

Despite the seeming simplicity of painting windows, in order for your frames not to peel off in just a few months, you must adhere to a certain technology.

Training

First you need to make visual inspection window. Tidy up all closing mechanisms, ensure a snug fit of weirs, and fix loose structural elements.

All cracked and peeling paint must be removed. If this is not done, then in such places, when re-staining, the old coating will begin to swell and burst.

Paste the glass with masking tape around the perimeter of the frames, so you protect them from paint, you do not have to carry out the tedious procedure for cleaning them; if there is no tape at hand, apply soapy water to the glass and wait until it dries.

Removing old layers

Frames that have been repeatedly painted must be completely cleaned of previous coatings. To do this, you can use special compositions for removing paint (they are sold in construction stores). After application, you can scrape off the old layers with a spatula. Or take advantage building hair dryer: it will warm up the paint, after which it can be removed with the same spatula.

Remove the coloring composition with a blowtorch, but be extremely careful not to burn yourself.

Grinding

It is necessary to carefully cover all the cracks with putty for wood. After that, you can process the surface of the frames with coarse and fine abrasive paper.

If you skip this stage of work, you can get ugly rough surfaces after the paint dries: the fibers located on the frames will rise.

Padding

If as a result preparatory work all the paint was removed from the frames, or you decided to paint the wooden windows for the first time, then after grinding the entire structure must be treated with a primer mixture. Thanks to this, the paint will last longer.

Paint preparation

The coloring composition must be diluted, since a thick layer of the composition cannot be applied evenly, sagging, unevenness remain and, in the end, it will quickly crack. However, as a result of dilution, the paint should not be similar in consistency to water.

Experiment, pour some paint from the can into another container and dilute it to required state; what solvent to do this, ask the seller.

Application

After the brush has been dipped into the jar, it is necessary to draw each side of it along the edge of the container - excess paint will go away.

Do not dip the brush all the way into the jar, lower it halfway down the length of the pile.

You need to paint the outer sides of the frames first. AT last turn paint the window sill.

Wooden structures are treated in 2-3 layers. No need to strive to paint over all the cracks and dents at once. Remember, a thick layer of coloring composition will crack quickly.

The first layer should be thin.

Let the previous coat dry completely before applying the next coat.

If, as a result of painting, the shortcomings described above come out to light, then they can again be eliminated by grinding.

The outer side of the frames, as a result of systematic weathering, needs more frequent painting. It is completely optional to process the frame with a completely coloring compound. If damaged small plot layer of paint on the frame, then you can remove the remaining paint only from it, cover it with a primer, sand it, paint it and additionally protect it with varnish.

  4. Small hammer;
  5. A set of sandpaper with different grain sizes;
  6. Masking tape, newspaper, a small brush and a ditch for painting.

Choosing a paint

To perform work on updating the wooden frame of the window on the outside, acrylic paint is quite suitable.

And for you can use alkyd-based materials, although it is possible to use acrylic paints both outside and inside the premises.

For antiseptic treatment any materials are suitable, the main thing is that they are intended to protect wooden materials.

TIP: When choosing finishing materials, pay attention to the brands of domestic manufacturers. As a rule, our manufacturers offer more economical options, unlike foreign analogues.

Not suitable for updating a wooden frame, for example, Zinga conductive paint or other brands, such as fire-retardant paints for metal Polistil, as they are used to protect metal structures, technical, etc.

Preparing the surface of the wooden window frame

All window renovation work can be greatly simplified if the window sashes are not removed from their hinges. However, in order to get the highest quality result from the work done finishing works, the best option it will be the removal of individual elements of the window structure.

Painting old window frames includes the following preparatory activities:

  • Removal of shutters and dismantling of handles;

The sashes from the hinges must be removed carefully, especially from old windows, as there is a risk of damage to the frame and glass structure. If the pens are painted, then they can be left in their places or if it is not possible to remove them, paste them with masking paper tape.

  • Removing old paintwork with special tools (metal scrapers, grinding machines with appropriate nozzles, building hair dryers and solvents;

TIP: It is most convenient and quickest to remove old paint from the base with a building hair dryer and a metal hard scraper. To do this, the surface of the selected area is slightly heated, after which the paint layer will become pliable and can be easily removed with a scraper. This operation must be repeated until complete removal old paint layer.

  • Grinding a wooden frame structure, first with coarse sandpaper, then with fine sandpaper, until a smooth and even surface is obtained;

Dust from the surface after grinding is cleaned with a rag or vacuum cleaner.

  • Sealing of all irregularities, potholes and cracks;

Putty is applied to problem areas with a metal spatula, smoothed and dried well, and then sanded with fine sandpaper.

We close up all the recesses and irregularities - we putty

  • The final stage is the treatment of the frame structure with antiseptic solutions that block the appearance of fungi, mold and various pests.

  • It is desirable to carry out work in calm, not hot weather. The best time to do this kind of work early autumn and late spring.
  • Apply the paint along the grain of the wood with a small flat brush in a thin layer. To do this, the brush is slightly dipped into the paint and the excess is removed on the edge of the plastic tray.

  • The first layer is usually a primer, it must be applied, carefully rubbing into the base, while filling the entire wood structure.
  • The second layer of paint is a fixing one, it is applied over the first pre-dried layer with a thin film without smudges and ugly streaks.

The technology of restoration of window frames depends on the state of wooden structures and requires high-quality performance of certain operations.

Preparation for work

The best time to paint windows is on a warm spring day when there is no rain and the sun is not too bright. For the repair of wooden frames at different stages of work, the following items are used:

  • Building hair dryer;
  • Grinder;
  • Hammer, chisel;
  • Spatula, scraper;
  • Sandpaper;
  • masking tape;
  • Brush and rags;
  • Utensils for paint;
  • Brushes, screwdrivers.

If replacement is necessary, wooden glazing beads and small nails are prepared. For surface treatment, compositions are used:

  • Soil-antiseptic;
  • Putty on wood;
  • Window paint or varnish;
  • Solvent.

If possible, the doors and fittings are removed, the glasses are pulled out or covered with paper using adhesive tape. The old coating is removed from wooden parts, for which it exists.

Sealing cracks and cracks

Surface defects that appear after cleaning are hidden with putty for outdoor use. The acrylic-based composition is applied in thin layers in several approaches. If a transparent finish is planned, the putty is selected to match the tone of the wood or tinted with color. The repair mixture can be prepared independently from epoxy glue and small sawdust.

Surface grinding

Sanding is always performed in two stages: first they pass with coarse sandpaper (No. 80), then the surface is “finished” with fine-grained sandpaper (No. 120). Grinding operations in the preparation process are used repeatedly:

  1. After removing the old paint, the wood is completely processed.
  2. During the elimination of defects, each layer is cleaned at the site of application of the composition.
  3. At the end of the putty, the entire surface of the window frame is sanded.
  4. They remove the fine pile that rises after treating the tree with an antiseptic.

Primer application

Impregnation of the frame with a primer protects the wood from decay, reduces paint consumption and improves its adhesion to the surface. The surface is wiped with a damp cloth from dust, degreased and traces of resin are removed. The primer is applied with a brush, carefully rubbing the liquid in the direction of the fibers.

Painting a wooden window

The paint for the first pass is slightly diluted in order to better close the wood pores. Normal consistency - when the enamel does not spread like water, and is easily applied in an even layer. The final coating is performed with a thicker paint on the dried surface. The brush is dipped halfway and, having drawn along the edge, the excess is left in the jar. First paint from the outside, using a wide tool for flat planes and a thin tool for corners. With a brush, strokes are made overlapping each other from the bottom up, leaving no smudges. Protective paper and adhesive tape are removed immediately so as not to damage the paint layer.

A well-made paint coating lasts 5-7 years, does not require annual renewal and increases the life of a wooden window.
