How to properly lay carpet on a wooden floor. How to properly lay carpet on a wooden floor, the main methods. Preparing the surface of a wooden floor

Carpet is a warm and soft floor covering. Carpet today is considered the most common material that is used to decorate floors in public places and apartments. You won't have any problems with carpeting. This process is simple and relatively short. The thermal insulation qualities of the material are very high. Carpet is able to retain heat with the help of a layer of air created between the pile and a dense base. And therefore, even in cold winters, your home will always be cozy and warm.

Preparing to install carpet

Proper installation of a floor covering such as carpet is essential to its long useful life. Of course, it is better to trust professionals, however, if you follow the instructions below, you will be able to handle it yourself.

room measurement

First you need to take accurate measurements of the room in which you plan to lay the carpet. Competently made measurements of the premises are the key to success in this difficult undertaking. Measurements should be taken, taking into account all the features of the room, window and door openings, radiators, the location of niches.

Even if you have a technical plan for an apartment, not everything may be written down in it. The reality is that technical documentation often contains many inaccuracies, and you end up buying too much or too little carpet. Only after you make your own sketch, go to the flooring store!

Room preparation

After you have delivered the carpet from the store to your home, carefully prepare the floor surface for laying the carpet by cleaning it of dust. The substrate must be level and clean, dry and smooth. In addition, there must be no cracks, various substances and small objects on the surface, because they can interfere with the laying process.

An important point that should not be neglected when laying the flooring is that drafts should not walk around in the room. Otherwise, laying problems may occur, such as folds and waves in the coating, which will be very difficult to get rid of in the future.

The room temperature when working with carpet should be at least 18 degrees Celsius, and the floor temperature should not be less than plus 15. The average relative humidity should not exceed 65%, and it is better to set it at 40%. Such climatic conditions must be maintained for 3 days before preparatory work and at least 7 days after laying the carpet.

Before direct laying, it is better to keep the carpet in a rolled form indoors for several hours, and preferably a day. Carpeting must in any case be acclimatized before installation. Rolls are recommended to be stored lying down, in other words - in a horizontal position. When working with carpet tiles, it is allowed to store packages in piles, but not more than 8 packages.

It is imperative to ensure that only one batch number of carpet is used in one room. This remark applies to carpets in both tiles and rolls. When working with pieces of carpet on the floor, marking strips should be carried out, given that the number of seams in the finished coating should be minimal. Joints should be located along the main movement. If possible, the carpet is placed perpendicular to the window opening in order to make the joints less noticeable.

Carpet installation methods

When all the preparatory work is completed, the carpet is laid. The advantage of carpet is that it can be laid on any surface, even on concrete. As a rule, it is customary to cover a room with one piece of carpet. If the room has a large area, then you will have to take several pieces of material - long, parallel to each other. When combining the parts, make sure that the direction of the pile and the pattern are preserved.

There are several popular ways to install carpet in a room, each of which depends on the conditions and parameters of the room. The most popular methods are listed below.

Carpet installation with adhesive tape

There are many misconceptions, one of them says that ordinary carpet and carpet fit the same way. Do not believe it, this is not at all the case: this material fits exclusively under
plinth for carpet. You need to start by laying double-sided adhesive tape on the floor. Spread the carpet over the surface, but do not immediately strive to spread it perfectly, most likely there will be extra parts in the corners. There is nothing wrong with this, adjust to the required size later.

It is customary to start laying carpet from the corners and move slowly along the walls towards other corners. The main thing is to pay attention to niches, window and doorways. In this situation, it's better to overdo it than mess it up. Filigree fit the carpet under them. Then cut off the excess pieces of the coating. This can be done with a flat board, starting in the middle and moving towards the corners.

It is better to wrap the holes in the floor carpet with colorless tape so that it does not peel off at the edges in the future. When laying carpet on the threshold, special precision is required. It is not necessary to perfectly equalize the coating. First, make diagonal cuts, and you will immediately see how much excess material will have to be removed. Finally, carefully press the carpet with a screwdriver, make sure that the coating is not damaged, as it is easily torn.

Direct bonding of carpet

Laying carpet with glue is a more time-consuming type of laying, but fixation in this case will be much better. First, treat the surface with special glue. As a rule, high-quality carpet adhesive is immediately ready for use after opening, it connects the lining quickly and is safe to use.

Gently lay the carpet on the glued surface. Some advise to process only the corners, but you will very soon feel all the "charm" of such laying of the flooring yourself. The only disadvantage of adhesive laying is the difficulty of re-laying the floor, because glued carpet is not so easy to tear off.

Never save glue, but securely fix the surface with it around the entire perimeter of the coating.
If unwanted glue stains remain after work, remove them with a damp cloth. Dried glue is wiped off with xylene.

Loose carpet flooring

The glueless method of laying carpet is the most inexpensive. The covering can be spread indoors by cutting out the required size rug and making a carpet overlock. Such a rug is easy to remove and clean, but the coating will create some interference when walking. And in order to cut a small piece of carpet, you often have to take an extra cover, overpaying for it.

A sheet of carpet is scattered with a 5-10 cm approach to the walls, after which it is rolled with a roller. It is recommended to start from the center towards the walls. After that, excess carpet can be removed. After laying, the material at the doorways is fixed with metal rails. The final touch of free flooring is the installation of skirting boards.

This method is not bad at all, because it involves the use of a small number of tools. And the laying technology itself is simple. The method can be implemented in small rooms. But you can lay carpet in this way only in small areas. In addition, it will be difficult to reuse carpet.

Carpet laying on underlay

Often carpet is laid on a substrate. In turn, the substrate under the carpet is necessary to level the floor surface, reduce the load on the feet, provide additional noise and heat insulation of the floor, increase the life of the floor covering and achieve the required level of floor height when the carpet itself is not enough.

The greater the load in the room on the floor, the denser the substrate should be taken, for example, you can use polyethinol foam or polyurethane foam. Often take a substrate with a thickness of 5-10 millimeters. First, the substrate is glued to the floor, and then the carpet is glued to it. However, such styling is difficult to do without work experience. In addition, additional costs of money and time will be required.

Stretching

This laying method was developed by English designers who paid attention to such a property of carpet as elasticity - the ability to stretch well. Carpet laying is carried out using grippers - rails with 2 rows of nails that are hammered at an acute angle of 45 degrees and stretchers - tools for stretching the material.

The power stretcher is used in rooms with a large area, and the knee apparatus is used in small rooms. Reiki are attached around the perimeter of the room, fixing the canvas on them. This method is practiced where it is necessary to change the carpet very often, for example, the children's carpet is changed very often, and if the solution is not suitable, lay the carpet on a double-sided adhesive tape. This method is also suitable for laying the coating on the stairs.

With this method of laying the carpet, glue is saved and the maximum durability of its service is achieved. However, it will not be possible to apply this option for rooms with dimensions greater than 5 meters in width or length.

Carpet care

When it comes to carpet maintenance, timely and proper care is of great importance. The care technology for this floor covering consists of regular and periodic cleaning, as well as the timely removal of stains.

Regular cleaning

Regular carpet cleaning is carried out several times a week with a vacuum cleaner. Carpet, which is made using natural materials, should not be cleaned with a washing vacuum cleaner. The villi of such a carpet are poorly ventilated. As a result, moisture is retained. In addition, it is difficult to get rid of the feeling of dampness. It is convenient to use a vacuum cleaner with a rotating brush when caring for carpet. Dry cleaning with a special powder is possible and once a month cleaning with a damp cloth.

Carpets made from artificial materials need to be cleaned regularly, just like carpets made from natural materials. It is permissible to use a washing vacuum cleaner, while collecting water very carefully. Excess water that remains on the carpet can wash out the solution contained in the material and prevent dirt formation.

A broom is not suitable for cleaning the carpet, because with its help it will not be possible to sweep out the dirt that has collected in the pile. Against the formation of dirt, the so-called mud trap mats, which are usually laid at the entrance to a room with carpet, can serve as a preventive measure.

Periodic cleaning

Periodic cleaning of the carpet must be carried out once every six months, in the process of such care, a deep dry cleaning of the carpet is carried out. The procedure should be trusted only by professionals who remove all dirt from the carpet and treat the flooring with a special solution that gives the material dirt-repellent properties. But because of the attempt to arrange a deep cleaning with your own hands, you can completely ruin the carpet.

Stain removal

The fight against stains completes the baton in the struggle for a durable and clean carpet. If stains appear on the floor covering, they are recommended to be removed immediately. To do this, you need to have a set of special stain removers on hand.

When removing stains from the carpet, you must adhere to the following rules:

  1. The thick substance is removed with a spoon. The movement of the device is directed towards the center of the spot.
  2. The stain should be blotted with a clean towel without rubbing;
  3. The stain must be removed with a damp cloth or a sponge soaked in a special agent. Movements are directed towards the center of the spot.
  4. After such manipulations, it is worth rinsing the place where the stain was with clean water and waiting until the surface dries.

It is possible to remove almost all types of stains on your own, except for traces left by shoe polish. It will not be possible to remove paint, various food colorings and rust with your own hands. To remove such stains, it is better to seek help from specialists from a dry cleaner or a cleaning company. At the same time, you should always remember that timely cleaning and regular care of the carpet will extend the time of its useful operation at times and will allow you to enjoy comfort in the house for many years.

Thus, carpet remains one of the most popular floor coverings in recent times. Special roll material with pile present is especially often used in bedrooms, nurseries and rest rooms. Carpet installation is not as easy as it might seem at first glance. This work has a number of features, and in order not to spoil the material, follow the instructions above. And the carpet, laid with your own hands, will recreate a special comfort in your home and fill your home with an atmosphere of warmth.

Carpeting is a surefire way to give your interior a special charm. What could be nicer than feeling the soft, warm and fluffy pile under your feet and admiring the beautiful and practical flooring at the same time? Carpet successfully replaces the carpet, thanks to its excellent functional and quality characteristics, long service life, ease of maintenance. But the main advantage is the ability to lay carpet on your own, using conventional tools and consumables.

Choosing a carpet

Of course, before proceeding directly to the finishing work, you need to buy this very carpet. The classification of carpet is quite extensive, so choosing the right option is not so easy. When purchasing this final floor finishing element, you must be guided by the following principles:

  • the material from which the carpet is made;
  • purpose;
  • method of dyeing threads;
  • manufacturing method;
  • pile shape and height.

But this is not all. It turns out that it is better to choose the type of carpet, based on the characteristics of the room for which it is intended. For example, a short-pile tufted flooring is suitable for a living room, a water-repellent needle-punched carpet for a hallway, a flocked carpet for a bath, and a high-pile material for a bedroom.

According to the composition of the carpet, there are three types: natural, artificial, mixed.
Natural is made from wool, cotton, jute and linen. The flooring is characterized by high fire and moisture resistance and elastic structure, but wears out quickly.

Artificial carpet is made from polyester, acrylic, nylon, olefin, latex acts as a lining.

Mixed samples are produced from synthetic fibers with the addition of wool. This coating combines the properties of the two previous types and is great for the living room.

Depending on the type of pile, carpet is of the following types:

In addition to the listed types, there are also velor, shag, felt, katlup, which are no less attractive and of high quality.

We make measurements

So, we decided on the choice of the type of carpet, which means it's time to do the calculations. The footage is calculated like this:

  • we measure the area of the room, create a sketch, which marks the location of arches, doors, stairs, columns;
  • if the carpet is not a single canvas, but a roll, then we determine the length and number of strips;
  • add 5 cm to the length of the first strip, add the length of the repeating pattern from the second strip.

It is necessary to take into account not only the geometric shape of the room, but also the absence or presence of niches under the window sills, the width of the carpet.

What to consider first

In order for the work on the flooring of the carpet to go perfectly, you should consider a few points:
1. Special preparation of the base is not required: the carpet can be laid safely on any surface. The only thing you need to worry about is the cleanliness of the floor.
2. A day before the start of work, it is recommended to roll out the floor covering so that it “gets used” to the room temperature.
3. The air temperature must be at least 15 degrees, the glue and the carpet itself - at least 17.

What is the underlayment for?

Beginning masters very often forget about the substrate, which is not entirely correct. After all, this little nuance is of no small importance. The underlay creates a feeling of warmth, smooths out minor floor defects, and increases the life of the carpet by several times.
As for the material of the substrate, it is different. Most often it is corrugated and flat rubber, natural or synthetic felt, polyurethane foam.

It is important!
The main quality that the substrate should have is elasticity!

What tools will we need?

If you decide to lay the carpet yourself, there is nothing easier, especially if you have all the necessary tools.

Prepare ahead of time:

  • device for thermal gluing (ironing). Art. N 617000;
  • construction knives for cutting the coating. Art. N 967680, 966680;
  • thermal bonding tape;
  • rail with nails (gripper);
  • lever device for tension - turn-stretcher. Art. N 623900;
  • ruler, notched trowel, hammer, screwdriver, screws, tape measure and awl;
  • knee stretcher-kicker. Art. No. 641000.

Carpet laying technology

There are several ways to lay carpet:

Direct gluing (adhesive method)

Direct gluing - a method when the floor covering keeps within on glue on all area. The method is great for laying small pieces of carpet and eliminates the occurrence of wrinkles and bubbles.

It is important!
The adhesive method is often used in high traffic areas.

1. Clean the work surface from foreign objects.
2. With a notched trowel, apply adhesive to the floor and substrate, stick.
3. Treat another part of the floor and glue the second strip of the substrate butt-to-butt with the first.
4. Let the glue dry (the time required for this is indicated in the instructions).
5. Spread the carpet on the floor with a 10 cm approach to the walls. The excess can then be cut off.

6. Spread the cover by pressing it to the floor and at the same time stretching a little.
7. Do the same with the rest of the pieces of the canvas.
8. Make the final cut of the carpet and install the skirting boards by pulling the fabric under them with a knee kicker stretcher.

It is important!
If the carpet is dense, then it is not necessary to use a substrate.

  • guarantee of a strong, reliable installation;
  • possibility of use on large areas;
  • gluing several pieces of carpet is allowed;
  • the appearance of bubbles and wrinkles is minimized;
  • can be cleaned with a “washing vacuum cleaner”;
  • has the ability to slow down the spread of flames.
  • the complexity of laying, it is advisable to do this under the supervision of professionals;
  • carpet cannot be used twice.

Loose laying with fixation around the perimeter

This method is considered the simplest and most economical. It is optimal for small spaces where it is advisable to use a single piece of coverage.
1. Clean the floor surface.
2. Roll out the underlay on the floor and secure it with a stapler at 20 cm intervals.
3. Glue the underlay knocks with adhesive tape.
4. Roll out the carpet, going to the walls (10 cm).
5. With a factory cut, attach the coating to the wall and fix it with a plinth.
6. Stretch the canvas to opposite walls.
7. Cut off the excess carpet, fix the cover with a plinth, pulling it with a kicker.
8. Near the doors, press the carpet with a metal rail.

It is important!
Please note that this method provokes the appearance of bubbles and wrinkles, significantly reduces wear resistance and service life.

  • the method does not require floor preparation and can be carried out without assistance;
  • does not require the purchase of adhesive tape, grippers.
  • low laying strength;
  • can not be used for cleaning "washing vacuum cleaner";
  • it is not recommended to place heavy furniture equipped with wheels on the carpet laid in this way.

Loose laying with tape fixation

This method is used in 70% of cases, even despite the fact that it requires preliminary preparation of the floor. The tape comes in different widths, from 63 mm (2.5 inches) to 150 mm (6 inches). Adhesive tape is selected depending on the type of carpet.

Adhesive tape is glued (first along the perimeter, then in the form of a "grid" at intervals of 50x50 cm or strips of 8 cm), without removing the protective film. The carpet, cut with a margin (5 cm on each side), is laid in such a way that its edges go onto the walls with a “trough”. Then remove the top protective film and glue the canvas.
Cut off excess carpet with a construction knife. If you plan to install skirting boards, then you need to step back from the wall by at least 5 cm, or even more.

It is important!
Several pieces of canvas can be glued onto the adhesive tape. The consumption of adhesive tape is 10 m (one roll) per 8 m2.

Fixation on adhesive tape is convenient on smooth, dust-free surfaces - linoleum, tiles, laminate, porcelain stoneware, high-quality parquet. Scotch flooring is often used in office space. In addition, this is a great option for those who like to change decor often.

  • simplicity of the method. Such laying of carpet with your own hands takes a minimum of time;
  • no need for additional costs for the substrate;
  • can be used in the presence of the "warm floor" system;
  • the ability to quickly replace the carpet without the need for floor preparation.
  • bumps and bubbles may appear;
  • Scotch tape sometimes deforms due to temperature changes.

Stretching (tension)

This glueless method was proposed by British designers, who noticed the elasticity of the carpet and decided to use this property for their own purposes. Laying is carried out using grippers - rails with nails driven in two rows at an angle of 45 degrees, and stretchers - tools for tensioning the web.

It is important!
A power stretcher is needed in rooms with a large area, and a knee stretcher in a small one.

Reiki are attached around the perimeter, carpet is fixed on them.
1. Prepare the surface.
2. Fasten the grippers along the perimeter of the room with nails towards the walls.
3. Lay the underlay, attaching it in 20 cm increments with a stapler.
4. Lay out the carpet, aligning the factory cut with the wall.
5. Using a knee stretcher (kicker), secure the edge of the cover onto the gripper. Install the kicker teeth a couple of centimeters from the rail and hit the knee on its pillow. Attach the carpet to the nails.
6. Then the tension occurs due to the power stretcher, starting from the corners. The base should rest against the wall, where the carpet is already well fixed.
7. Insert the stretcher teeth at a distance of 15 cm from the opposite wall into the carpet, fix it. Pull the ends over the grippers with a kicker. You need to do this in all directions.
8. Fold over the excess edges, trim them.

After the installation is completed, you need to let the glue or tape dry. You should not enter the room during the day and even more so arrange furniture in it. If you can’t do without additional work, you need to do them very carefully.

Carpet installation - video instruction

Competent laying of carpet, the price of which will depend on the chosen technology, will undoubtedly transform your home and make it much warmer, more beautiful and more comfortable. It remains only to maintain perfect condition and be glad that you not only chose such a magnificent floor covering, but also laid it yourself.

The wooden floor is still in demand. It is environmentally friendly, durable, perfectly retains heat.

But before you put the carpet on the wooden floor, you need to level it, especially in those cases when laying the carpet requires different parts of it.

You can level a wooden floor by laying OSB or chipboard on its surface. The thicker the coating, the less possible the risk of deflection of the boards.

Stages of laying carpet on a wooden floor

Laying carpet on a wooden floor does not require much knowledge and practical skills in this area, you just need to follow certain conditions, have the necessary attributes, and also act in stages.

Stages of laying a coating on a wooden floor:

  • level the floor
  • choose a styling method;
  • make styling;
  • install skirting boards.

Before starting work on laying carpet flooring on a wooden floor, it is necessary to withstand the carpet in the same room where it is planned to be laid.

You have to keep it for a day. This condition is especially important in winter, it helps the carpet to get used to the environment where it will lie.

Ways to lay carpet on a wooden floor

There are several ways to lay the product on a wooden floor. The choice of installation method depends on the quality of the floor covering, on the material of the floor covering, on the available tools and materials at hand. The choice may also depend on design preferences.

Installation methods:

  • adhesive;
  • fixation around the perimeter;
  • fixation on adhesive tape;
  • stretching.

Adhesive method of laying carpet on a wooden floor

- a method that involves gluing the floor covering completely to the entire surface of the floor.

The adhesive is applied with a roller, brush or serrated dispenser. The depth of the notches and their profile is selected in accordance with the type of carpet.

Method advantage:

  • can be used on large areas;
  • has the reliability of laying;
  • slows down the spread of flames;
  • reduces the effect of moisture;
  • does not require a substrate;
  • suitable for carpet, consisting of several pieces;
  • eliminates the formation of bubbles and wrinkles.

The disadvantages of this method:

  • there is no possibility of secondary laying of a carpet product;
  • pre-leveling of the wooden floor is required;
  • new floor preparation is required for laying carpet when it is replaced.

Fixing the carpet to the wooden base around the perimeter

Perimeter fixing is the easiest way to lay carpet on a wooden floor.

Also, this method is the cheapest. The carpet is unfolded on the floor with an allowance for the walls - 15 cm. With the help of a special roller, the floor covering is rolled.

You need to start rolling from the center in all directions. After rolling, the excess product is cut off. The last step is fixing the flooring. A metal rail reinforces the passage.

Advantages of the method:

  • easy to dismantle the carpet and lay a new one;
  • easy to do styling yourself;
  • there are no costs for adhesive tape, grippers and a substrate;
  • there is no need to prepare the floor for laying the product.

The disadvantages of the method:

  • bubbles and wrinkles may form on the carpet;
  • it is not recommended to use furniture on wheels on the carpet;
  • it is impossible to move furniture over the coating;
  • do not use a washing vacuum cleaner for flooring;
  • service life is reduced.

Fixing carpet to wood with double sided tape

Fixing with double-sided tape is a very popular way of laying carpet on a wooden floor.

There are several types of double-sided tape, with different widths. Depending on the type of flooring, the width of the tape is selected. First, the adhesive tape is glued to the floor.

Glue must be in the form of a grid. The mesh size is 50 x 50 cm. The carpet is laid out on the floor, while it should go on the walls by 5 cm. The protective film is removed from the adhesive tape and the product is glued.

At the end of gluing, all excess carpet is cut off along its perimeter. When installing skirting boards, it is necessary to leave a gap of 5 cm from the wall.

Advantages of the method:

  • it is possible to change the floor covering;
  • no need to use a substrate;
  • does not require the involvement of specialists;

The disadvantages of the method:

  • it is necessary to level the floor, its careful preparation;
  • there is a risk of tape deformation;
  • bubbles and wrinkles may form on the coating.

Scotch consumption - one coil per 8 square meters. The estimated length of the coil is 10 meters. This method is especially suitable for those who often change the design of the room.

Stretching carpet on wood floor

Stretching is a method that does not involve gluing carpet.

It is based on the elasticity of the floor covering. Grips are attached around the perimeter of the room.

On grippers, nails should be driven in at an angle of 45 degrees. The floor covering is stretched and fixed on the rails. Stretching is done using special tools.

This method requires the presence of a substrate. This method is the highest quality, but it requires special tools and skills in this area, so it is better to invite a specialist to perform these works.

Whatever method of laying carpet on a wooden floor is chosen, the main rules are floor leveling and its thorough preparation for laying.

Carpeting is less demanding on the laying surface than, for example, laminate or linoleum. This does not mean that it can be laid anywhere, but laying carpet on a wooden floor is quite possible with some preparatory work. How to prepare a wooden surface for carpeting, the laying methods used and the feasibility of using an underlay to make the floor warmer - these topics will be discussed in the article.

Wood floor preparation

It is unlikely that anyone would think of laying carpet on top of the parquet, so let's consider a more realistic option with a used wooden plank floor. Many homeowners and apartment dwellers want to ennoble such a surface, resorting to half measures. That is, do without dismantling the warm wooden flooring, and put something modern and attractive directly on it. This makes sense, as significant funds are saved, and there is no need for large-scale repair measures that take time and bring discomfort.

Before laying carpet, you should assess the condition of the wooden surface. Carpet is not a rigid material, so all the "diseases" of wooden flooring, if any (crevices, bumps, creaking floorboards), will not go anywhere and the substrate will not improve the situation. If there are such problems, you should address them. In the event that it is not possible to eliminate irregularities or the reliability of the flooring is in doubt, it is advisable to put OSB boards or plywood on top.

Such a technological move will simultaneously strengthen the existing wooden floor, make the surface warmer and more suitable for laying carpet. The board material must be rigidly attracted to the underlying wood with self-tapping screws.

If the wooden surface is in excellent condition, it is enough to dismantle the old skirting boards, and then do a thorough cleaning, which, in addition to washing the surface, should include:

  • degreasing oil stains;
  • removal of areas of unreliably holding paint;
  • sealing gaps (if any).

The gaps between the floorboards and the wall do not need to be sealed, as this is a deformation gap that compensates for possible fluctuations in the linear dimensions of the wood.

The feasibility of using the substrate

If the floor surface is flat, without sharp protrusions and recesses, while being warm, it is hardly advisable to lay a substrate under the carpet. This will introduce additional costs and limit the number of possible carpet installation methods. The main types of inexpensive polymer substrates do not adhere well, and the methods of laying carpeting suggest just such a method of fixation, except for stretching.

The carpet itself has good soundproofing and heat-insulating qualities, so the substrate is not needed here for this reason (especially when laying on a warm wooden floor).

It makes sense to lay a substrate under the carpet only if there are irregularities that can injure the coating during operation. In such a situation, the substrate will brighten up surface defects and significantly extend the life of the carpet. However, it is desirable to use not a polymer, but a cork substrate. It is more expensive, but at the same time natural, much more durable, warmer and provides for its reliable gluing.

How to lay carpet

When laying carpet on a wooden floor, all key methods are applicable:

  • stretching (tension and fixation along the perimeter with the help of special strips);
  • fixing to the surface with glue;
  • fixation with double-sided tape.

Stretching from a technical point of view is the most difficult method. In small rooms with moderate traffic, it makes little sense to use it. This method is used exclusively by professionals when carpet is laid over large areas in rooms with an increased load on the floor surface.

In a house or apartment, you can lay carpet on the floor in the last two ways, the choice of one of them depends on the area of \u200b\u200bthe room. Professionals recommend gluing carpet with a floor square in a separate room of more than 20 m2. If the area of \u200b\u200bthe room is smaller, it will be enough to use wide double-sided tape for reliable fixation. Moreover, if the floor is less than 12 m2, then only the perimeter is glued. When the area of the room is within 12-20 m2, strips of adhesive tape are placed not only around the perimeter, but also in one of the directions of the floor in increments of 0.5-1 m. Let's look at the procedure for carrying out work in each of the options.

How to lay carpet on wood tape?

Double-sided tape is selected with a width of 5 cm or more. A tape of a smaller width may not fully perform the assigned functions. In addition to tape, you will need:

  • construction knife;
  • plastic spatula.

After the floor surface is prepared, the carpet roll is brought into the room where the laying will be carried out and left there for a day. This step is necessary for the temperature adaptation of the flooring. This is especially important in winter, when there is a big difference between external and internal temperatures.

Important! Few people do this, however, it is correct to let the unfolded and trimmed canvas lie on the floor for 1-3 days (depending on the type of carpet). Due to this, the coating is completely straightened. Such an event will guarantee that in the future the canvas will not form wrinkles.

When "acclimatization" has occurred, we proceed to the pattern of the carpet according to the contours of the room. Usually the contents of the roll have a regular rectangular shape, but slightly (up to 5 cm with correct measurements) exceeds the area of \u200b\u200bthe room. The purpose of the pattern is to make the canvas match the floor around the entire perimeter.

First, we roll out the roll and spread the carpet so that the two mutually perpendicular edges of the canvas align along the corresponding walls. Along the remaining perimeter, the carpet is trimmed with a construction knife. When trimming, you need to make sure that the cut canvas does not reach the wall by 1-0.5 cm. This gap is needed to smooth the carpet.

Turning the edges of the canvas along the walls, glue the double-sided tape around the perimeter, and then remove the protective film from the front surface of the tape. Now with a smoothing iron we smooth the coating from the center to the edges and glue it to the adhesive tape. On a wooden floor, it is possible to additionally grab the edges of the carpet with studs, which will provide additional fixation of the canvas in a straightened position. You can see how this is done in practice in this video.

Adhesive laying

With a large floor area, a special dispersion adhesive is used to securely fix the coating on the surface. The easiest option is PVA or Bustilat. You can choose specialized compositions of domestic production and products of foreign brands, but the latter will cost more for approximately the same quality.

To apply and level the adhesive mass, you will need a special dispenser that resembles a notched trowel with fine teeth. The technology as a whole resembles that described above, with the difference that a more reliable adhesive substrate is used instead of adhesive tape. The glue is applied in strips (no need to glue all the way), the number of which depends on the floor area. Carpet adhesive has an exposure period, that is, after it is applied to the surface, it is necessary to let it dry for 10-30 minutes, and only after that the carpet should be glued. How to lay carpet on glue, see the next video.

A bare floor, even a very beautiful one, is not to everyone's liking. If the floor is laid with the cheapest materials without any decorative qualities, then it would be very nice to cover it with carpet. Do-it-yourself carpet laying is a simple matter, except for stretch laying. But first, let's talk about the requirements for the room under the carpet and preparing the floor for it.

Where is the best place to lay carpet?

It is definitely impossible to lay carpet where the temperature and humidity for one day and for more than three days go beyond the limits of sanitary standards: temperature from +18 to +27; humidity up to 75%. Also, if the microclimate parameters change within the normal range, but abruptly, within an hour or two, the carpet will also crawl.

But in a room where during the year the temperature changes from +16 in winter to outdoor in summer, the carpet will lie well: its material will have time to adapt to changes in the microclimate. A residential balcony can be covered with carpet either loosely laid (the floor area is too small for the flooring to go astray) or stretched.

But in rooms with a warm floor, it is impossible to lay carpet in any case. Firstly, the warm floor itself will cease to fulfill its function from this: naturally, there will be no convection of heated air through the coating; heat radiation as well. Secondly, the temperature gradient (difference) across the thickness of the coating will turn out to be such that it will definitely crawl.

How much carpet do you need

With any installation method, seams should be avoided. It's not so much about aesthetics. Due to temperature deformations, pieces of material will either crawl on top of each other, or a gap will form between them, and the edges will become ragged. Therefore, the carpet must be bought in one piece according to the size of the room with a margin of 30-40 cm on each side.

Floor and coating preparation

Carpet flooring will only lie well on a flat, smooth floor. Therefore, before laying, you need to check the floor for evenness and horizontality with a level and an even rail along the width of the room. The deviation within the room should not exceed 4-5 mm, otherwise the flooring will crawl with any method of fastening. If the deviation exceeds the specified value, the floor must be leveled with a leveler for the appropriate purpose: for stone or wood. On the wooden floor, you first need to walk cycles.

To check the horizontal level with a bubble level, it must be calibrated. This is done as follows: set the level on a horizontal surface. Then, a match is slipped under one end of it and slowly moved to the middle, holding the other end with your fingers until the lateral risk is in the middle of the bubble. Then, with a caliper or ruler, measure the distance from the hanging end of the level to the surface, and the calculation is carried out according to the rules of trigonometry for small angles.

For example: level 1 m long. The rise of its end during graduation is 2 mm. When setting the level to the center of the room 5 m long along the room, the bubble went a quarter beyond the risk. Then the deviation from the horizontal at the length of the level of 1 m is 1 mm, and at 5 meters of the length of the room - 5 mm. It's on the edge; carpet will need to be well strengthened throughout the area.

Preparation of carpet for installation is reduced to keeping it in the room intended for this for at least three days. A thick roll of heat-insulating material in the mass should warm up to room temperature, and the air between the villi should acquire its humidity.

Tools

For carpeting, you will need special tools: a knife and a roller. A carpet knife no longer looks like a knife, but like a manual sewing machine: it is a rather solid unit in the form of an angle with a handle. The handle is pulled, pressing against the coating, and the cut off strip comes out on the side.

There are also light roller blades for carpeting. It is not recommended for beginners to use them: in inept hands, such a knife will inevitably splash sideways, and the whole piece will be spoiled. The same thing will happen if you cut the carpet with an ordinary mounting knife.

The roller for rolling out the carpet is similar to the paint roller, but wider and with a fairly hard coating of the roller. It is impossible to roll out the carpet with a paint roller: the particles of the roller coating will be packed into the pile, and there will be stripes that cannot be got rid of.

These tools are not cheap, and are unsuitable for any other purpose. How to be here? Very simple: rent.

True professionals of the "carpet" business often use knee pads for work, but for one time they, in principle, will not be needed.

How to make carpet joints

Imagine: you found a suitable piece of carpet for sale in the remnants, that is, inexpensively. But for the living room it is too big, but the seller does not want to cut it - there will be quite a lump left. But this remainder in terms of area, if cut into strips, will be enough for the hallway, where it will be necessary to change the coating often. Or you, in spite of everything, want to cover the apartment with multi-colored stripes. In any case, you need to know how to make carpet joints.

The joints on the carpet are made as follows: two pieces are laid with an overlap of at least 4 cm. Then two layers are cut along the joint line at once, to the floor, the ends are bent, the cut inner strip is removed, and released. There was a small tear - they bend it, release it in that place or roll it with a roller. Everything, the joint is ready.

For joints of carpet with other floor coverings, ordinary metal profiles-thresholds are suitable. Moreover, in most cases, the joint will fall on the doorway, where the threshold will come in handy.

Carpet installation methods

There are five ways to lay carpet:

  • Free styling.
  • Laying with fixation around the perimeter.
  • Attached with double sided tape.
  • Adhesive laying.
  • Stretch laying (stretch laying).

We will consider them in order of applicability to certain rooms and / or floors.

Loose styling

Laying loose carpet means simply laying the carpet on the floor like a carpet or rug. It is advisable to do this on a balcony, in a closet adapted for a dressing room or in another narrow room without movable furniture. But if a home workshop is equipped in the closet, the carpet is useless there: you can’t catch the dropped small details from the pile, but then they will definitely, according to the law of meanness, dig into the leg.

With free laying, a suitable piece is laid on the floor with a trough, V-shaped cuts at 90 degrees are made in the corners with scissors, and then cut around the perimeter. This is perhaps the only case when a light roller cutter for carpet can be recommended to an amateur master: the cut is carried out by pressing the cutting roller into a corner. That's all.

Laying with fixation around the perimeter

For laying with fixation around the perimeter, the skirting boards are first removed. The desired piece of coating is laid in the same way as with free laying, with a trough with a twist on the walls. Now the rays, from the center to the edge, smooth the coating with a roller. Then they are cut off, but the edges are left wrapped on the wall by 30-40 mm. Then the edges are folded under the bottom until the fold line coincides with the wall, and skirting boards are installed on self-tapping screws or mounting nails. The holes for the fastener heads in the baseboards are sealed with liquid nails to match the baseboard.

This method is very simple and economical, but it is only suitable for rooms with ideal temperature and humidity conditions, a completely flat floor and non-movable furniture. A chair on rollers, even special for carpets, double and wide, sooner or later will bring down the coating. Option - if you need to somehow cover up a very unsightly floor before repair.

Tape fixation

For this fixation, double-sided tape is used. For 8 sq. m of the covered area will need 10 m of adhesive tape, regardless of its width. The width of the adhesive tape for carpet is from 63 to 180 mm. Adhesive tape 63 mm wide lasts 2-3 years; 180 mm - 5-7 years.

First, adhesive tape is glued around the perimeter along the walls and from the center with divergent rays, REMOVING THE PROTECTIVE TAPE ON ONE SIDE. The side of the tape facing up should be closed for now.

Carpet on such a "crate" of adhesive tape is laid, leveled and cut, as described above. Then half of the cover is wrapped on the remaining half inside out. Remove the protective tapes from the glued strips of adhesive tape and carefully roll the carpet onto the "crate". The same procedure is done with the other half.

Carpet on adhesive tape lies well on an uneven floor, as long as it is cleanly washed before laying. On such a coating, you can ride in a chair on carpet rollers and even drag a dining table. If it is planned to quickly or frequently replace the carpet, then laying on adhesive tape is the only acceptable option. But this work requires accuracy and certain skills: after the carpet lies on the adhesive tape, it will not be possible to smooth out the wrinkles. Therefore, when self-laying on adhesive tape, a beginner must first practice rolling out the coating simply on the floor, without adhesive tape.

With laying carpet on adhesive tape, everything is simple: mentally divide the room into squares and carefully glue the adhesive tape. The wider and better - the longer it will last.

Adhesive laying

There are two technologies for laying carpet on glue: with single and double gluing. Single gluing is applied on flat floors; double - on hilly and / or inclined at the limit.

When gluing, the role of strips of adhesive tape is performed by strips of special glue for carpet, which are also applied with a special notched trowel. The type of spatula recommended for this adhesive is indicated on its packaging. Glue from reputable manufacturers is sold complete with a spatula.

For adhesive laying, the carpet is laid on a clean, dry floor, as for other laying methods, and cut as for free laying, without turning under the edge. Then half is wrapped, as when laying on adhesive tape, and glue is applied to the floor in the same way as tape strips: along the perimeter and with rays from the center to the edges. Lay the unfolded half, unscrew the other, and repeat the procedure. After that, the coating is leveled with a roller. You need to work quickly before the glue begins to set.

With double gluing, first a felt pillow or a special carpet underlay is glued to the floor, and then the actual coating is already on it.

Carpeting on glue is laid once and for all. The carpet torn off during replacement is no longer suitable for use, and traces of glue must be removed from the floor. True, there are adhesives for carpet, which after a certain time lose their properties, like adhesive tape, but they cost no less than adhesive tape. However, there is a certain sense in their use: wrinkles and bubbles can be smoothed out with glue that has not yet set.

Tension laying

And how to lay the carpet both forever and on an uneven floor, and so that it can be removed and then put again? So the carpet is laid in a stretch way, or with tension. Such laying is done with the help of special mounting elements - grippers.

Gripper - a thin bar with spikes sticking out of it at 45 degrees. On opposite sides of the gripper, the points are directed oppositely, i.e. along the same axis. The carpet must be designed for laying with grippers, and grippers must be suitable for this brand of carpet. For flooring, first choose a "gripper" carpet, and according to the specification for it - grippers of the appropriate type.
