Why is the mock orange not blooming? Mock orange - garden "jasmine" Mock bush - description

Chubushnik or, as it is also called, garden jasmine, is considered one of the most common and beloved plants by gardeners. The shrub is deciduous and multi-stemmed. Garden jasmine reaches a height of half a meter, and some of its varieties can frolic up to four meters. Read an overview of the types of mock orange.

Planting mock orange

To plant a plant, you must first decide on the choice of shrubs. It should have well-developed roots that adapt well and take root in a new place. Young shoots should be trimmed a little.

  1. Choice of location. To plant a shrub, you need to find a suitable place for it in the garden. The gerbil is considered the most comfortable soil for garden jasmine. For this reason, on clayey areas it is necessary to create a drainage for the shrub (drainage composition: crushed stone, pebbles and sand).
  2. Time for disembarkation. The most suitable time for planting a young mock orange will be the end of April, but autumn is also suitable for an adult shrub.
  3. Soil preparation. Due to the fact that the shrub has a very developed root system, it is necessary to dig a hole half a meter in diameter. The pit is filled with humus and not large quantity manure.

If the plant is planted in clay soil, then it is necessary to create drainage so that moisture does not linger on the roots.

Rooting of the plant occurs a month after planting, given that the shrub will receive a sufficient amount of moisture.

Caring for a mock orange in autumn

Mock orange is a shrub that feels comfortable both in partial shade and in well-lit sunbeams space.

Garden jasmine is very picky about the soil, it must be dried with minerals and nutrients. Also, the plant needs constant thorough watering. In order for the shrub to develop well and bloom profusely, it should be constantly fed.

It is necessary to feed the plant twice a year in spring and autumn.

How to prepare a mock orange for winter?

Garden jasmine is an unpretentious plant, but not all of its varieties are able to “painlessly” endure the winter cold. It is also hard to tolerate frosts and young shrubs that are not even a year old. If the cold is already close, then you need to think about preparing the plant for winter. The shrub should be tied with a rope and covered with light material, it is better to lay the roots with humus from the leaves. It will warm the mock orange throughout the winter.
It is necessary to cover the bush so that the ends of the young shoot do not freeze, and also so that the branches of the bush do not break under the weight of wet snow.

At the end of winter, when the snow begins to melt, it will be necessary to free the branches from the snow with the help of a pitchfork.

Mock orange transplant

You can transplant mock orange both in spring and autumn, because the shrub has quickly adaptive properties. In order to transfer an adult shrub with maximum comfort, you will have to cut off part of the crown, therefore this year flowering is not expected.

Before moving the shrub, it is necessary to carefully fill it with water so that it absorbs as much moisture as possible. After that, you should cut the shoots of last year, almost to the very root, and shorten those that remain a little. Only after the above manipulations can the plant be transplanted to another place.

In order for the garden jasmine to take root faster, it must be carefully filled with water and the ground around it must be trampled.

How to propagate mock orange?

Grow on your own garden plot the beautiful fragrant shrub of the mock orange is completely uncomplicated, because this plant can reproduce in almost all known ways:

Overall dimensions of the ridge: the width of the ridge should be one hundred centimeters, and the depth should be approximately fifteen centimeters. Sowing must be done in December, at a time when the snow cover reaches a height of a quarter meter. After the seeds are sown in the ground, they are covered. The beds are covered with spruce branches. Seeds sown in winter are not watered. And upon the arrival of spring, when the thaw begins, the first shoots break through the ground cover and are warmed by the first spring sun.

Seeds planted in winter provide high level seedling quality. And to everything else, the time that is spent on growing up and nurturing planting material, about 1.5 - 2.5 years less.

Young green cuttings should be cut in June, preferably in the middle of the month. Then they are moved to greenhouses for rooting. In spring or summer, a year later, cuttings with a well-developed root system are planted in a garden plot.

Chubushnik is unpretentious plant, whose varieties for the most part perfectly tolerate the conditions of the "Russian winter". Proper care of garden jasmine makes it possible to "see" snow-white flowers almost all year round. To do this, you just need to choose the varieties of mock orange, which will bloom at different times. And then the garden, veranda, terrace... everything will be filled with the sweet scent of garden jasmine. Read about the application in design and its existing types.

Rules for shaping and care

Here is one of my favorite flowers garden shrubs, symbols of the Russian garden - mock orange. And it is at this time that the important moment of preparing it for flowering in next year. In order for this shrub to please us with a large number of white fragrant flowers from year to year, you should take care of it in early July.

Most often, our gardeners, under the name of garden jasmine, grow a shrub - crown mock orange, which came to ornamental gardening from Western Europe. This plant has earned high praise from the gardeners of our region, as many of its varieties winter well without any shelter.

Mock orange blooms after a spring riot ornamental plants- Hungarian lilac, viburnum buldenezh, hawthorn. Perhaps, it is precisely because of this that the mock orange has so easily become a symbol of the Russian garden - for a long time it simply had no competitors. Mock orange flowers are very fragrant, mostly white, sometimes cream, arranged singly or in racemose groups. Often they completely cover the branches of the shrub. The aroma fills the entire garden, spreading for many meters around. Thanks to selection work, there are currently varieties Belle Etoile and Unusual with the presence of pink in the corolla of the flower.

The classic wild mock orange is quite easy to grow, but it is much more difficult to succeed in cultivating varieties. Many of them have thinner branches, they are inferior to wild shrubs in growth, more demanding on agricultural technology and wintering conditions. Unfortunately, some of the most beautiful foreign varieties are completely unsuitable for our climate zone.

Site selection. Mock orange grows very quickly. it photophilous plant- practically does not bloom in the shade. But mock oranges Golden and innosens, planted in the shade, still will not show their dignity to the fullest. So, their brightly colored foliage in the shade will remain green. And here is a variety of mock orange , on the contrary, it does not feel very comfortable in the open sun, as its variegated leaves burn under strong rays. This variety is best grown in partial shade.

Chubushnik Golden in my garden

Variety Golden(common mock orange form is golden). A dense, slow-growing shrub, reaching 1.5 meters in diameter. Often wider than tall. When grown in a sunny position until mid-summer, its foliage is lemon green or yellow, after flowering it becomes light green, and turns yellow again in autumn.

Variety

Variety Innosens () . Originator Lemoine. Shrub height - 2.5 m. Flowering - end of June. Climate zone– 4, relatively hardy. Shrub with spreading crown. The flowers are white, semi-double, fragrant. Leaves are green with cream and yellow streaks.

Variety (common mock orange variegated form). Originator Lemoine. Highly ornamental shrub with exquisite, very variegated foliage and flat, rounded, fragrant white flowers. Shade-tolerant and frost-resistant.

Soil and fertilizers. Mock orange prefers light, humus-rich soil that does not dry out in the sun. Therefore, in locking areas, it is necessary to carry out drainage works. To do this, broken brick, crushed stone and sand are laid at the bottom of the landing pit. The thickness of the drainage layer should be approximately 15 cm. Then the pit is filled with a mixture of humus with leafy soil and sand. If the soil in your area is sandy, easily drying out, you should add a mixture of peat, humus and clay to the planting hole. You can use a special water-retaining gel as an additive.

Due to annual pruning and strong growth, the mock orange needs enough a large number of nutrients. Therefore, it is useful to feed him. The time for this is best set aside in the spring at the beginning of leaf formation. Mock oranges respond very favorably to the application of both organic and complex mineral fertilizers. In the spring, several buckets of rotted manure or compost can be added under the mock orange bush, and after flowering, nitroammophoska, superphosphate or ash can be scattered to stimulate the growth of shoots.

It is better to mulch the soil under the shrub with any organic material- cut grass, leaf litter, peat, humus, rotted sawdust, wood chips or pine bark.

Winter hardiness. When choosing a mock orange, be sure to be interested in its winter hardiness. For the most part, mock oranges are quite winter-hardy, withstand frosts down to -25 ° C. However, some modern varieties of mock orange still freeze out. Most varietal mock oranges are not cold-resistant enough - some freeze slightly in harsh winters with little snow ( White Bouquet, Charm, Belle Etoile), others are afraid of late spring frosts. In severe winters in our region, they can freeze to snow, although then they quickly recover. For example, sort Avalanche (Avalanche), it is also called strawberry, freezes already at minus 15°C. But an adapted variety snow avalanche resistant to the climate of the middle zone. Often frosted over and beautiful terry variety Virginal.

Mock orange Strawberry in my garden

Of particular interest are winter-hardy varieties of mock oranges, bred by a breeder-dendrologist Nikolai Kuzmich Vekhov (1887-1956), who for 30 years led the Lipetsk Experimental Breeding Station. These include: Chamomile, Young Nat, Ballet of Moths, Snowballs, Pearls, Arctic Moonlight, Academician Komarov, Kazbek, Airborne, Obelisk, Snowstorm, Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya, Pompom, deserving wider distribution in ornamental horticulture.

Pruning. In order for the flowering of the mock orange to be plentiful every year, it needs regular pruning. The fact is that good flowering is observed only on strong shoots of last year. On thin and weak old shoots, flowers will also appear, but they will be small and there will be few of them. Many old shoots do not bloom at all and make the bush look sloppy. Therefore, after flowering, it is necessary to remove faded branches to the strong shoots of this year located below. After a while, you will notice that the leftover young growths of this year have become powerful. They should bloom profusely next year.

Remove all branches older than two or three years, as well as weak, damaged and frozen. Too long young branches can be shortened by trimming the thin tops.

After rejuvenation, the bush needs to be spudded and fed, and watered abundantly in dry summers.

Reproduction. Mock orange can be propagated by dividing the bush, but this procedure is often associated with transplanting a huge bush, which is highly undesirable and inconvenient. It is much easier to get planting material from your favorite variety in the form of layering or rooted cuttings.

For layering, you can use fairly large branches, which are bent to the ground and sprinkled with soil. After some time, they will develop their own roots, after which they can be cut off from the mother plant and allowed to develop on their own.

If you want to get a large amount of planting material, for example, for a hedge, then the most convenient method of reproduction is green cuttings. The most favorable period for this is the time after flowering, when young growths appear. They are used for rooting. To do this, they are broken out with a heel and placed in water for several days. After that, they are planted on a special bed for rooting.

In 2011, the Russian Chubushnik Society was created, which aims to promote this culture in Russia.

Transfer. Mock oranges tolerate transplantation quite easily and recover very quickly. To painlessly transfer the old big bush mock orange, you will have to sacrifice part of the crown and, therefore, lose a year of flowering. You can transplant both in the period from early to mid-September, and in early spring. Before digging up a shrub, it needs to be watered abundantly and left for a day so that it picks up moisture. After that, half of the old shoots should be removed to the very root, and the remaining ones should be shortened. Then it is already possible to dig up and move the mock orange to a new place, not forgetting again to water abundantly and compact the soil after planting.

These varieties are considered the most popular. They are in great demand. The plant can be chosen for every taste. Everything will depend on your preferences.

Proper planting of jasmine

In order for the shrub to grow well, you need to plant it correctly and continue to make constant care in the future. All varieties of jasmine are planted the same way. Let's take a look at what is necessary for the favorable growth of a shrub.

  1. You need to choose the right place. Since jasmine is an unpretentious plant, it will take root anywhere. The main thing is that there are no strong drafts. They prevent the bush from growing in the first 2 years of its life. It is better if you choose a sunny place for it, then the jasmine will be fragrant and bloom for your joy.
  2. The plant will look good in a flower bed next to blue ones and, for example, delphiniums or lavender.
  3. Jasmine gets along well with neighbors such as hydrangea or spirea.
  4. It can only be planted in autumn or spring.

We are interested in planting jasmine in the spring. Let's examine this issue more specifically.

What should be the soil?

As we said earlier, jasmine is an unpretentious plant, so it does not have any special preferences in the ground. But it is better if the land is fertile. Jasmine roots do not tolerate excessive moisture. It is better to plant the plant on higher ground. Before planting, drainage should be provided, which will consist of sand and small stones. In order for the planting of jasmine in the spring to be successful, it is worth adding about 50 grams of nitrophoska to the hole. As soon as the shrub is planted, the soil should be well tamped and spilled with water. Now you should carry out permanent jasmine fertilizers.

Fertilizer rules

How to plant jasmine in the spring, we sorted it out. Now let's pay attention to plant nutrition. There are some tips here:

Tip 1. The first fertilizer should be made only one year after planting the plant in open ground.

Advice 2. Jasmine should receive One of these is prepared according to the following recipe: in 10 liters of water you need to stir 50 grams of superphosphate, 25 grams of urea, 25 grams of potassium sulfide. The fertilizer is thoroughly mixed and the bush is watered with it.

Tip 3. Jasmine should be received in the right amount and organic fertilizers. These include manure or humus. One rule should be observed here: so that the roots of the plant do not burn out, the manure is diluted with water in a ratio of 1:15.

Following these simple tips, you will get an amazing garden in your garden that will delight you with its pleasant aroma. Now we know not only how to plant jasmine in the spring, but also how to properly fertilize it. But the care of the plant does not end there.

Rules for the formation of the crown of a shrub

As in spring, every owner of this should know wonderful plant. In order for the bush to have a beautiful and well-groomed appearance, you need to form the correct crown.

It is worth familiarizing yourself with some basic pruning rules:

  1. Prune in the spring when the plant is in the vegetative stage. Long branches are removed completely, short ones - half.
  2. To ensure that the branches are always filled with flowers, it is worth carrying out anti-aging pruning. All unnecessary and empty branches are removed.
  3. In an adult shrub, the main trunks should be shortened to 50 cm, the rest completely.
  4. Every year, be sure to sanitize the bush, in which remove excess and diseased branches.

Having figured out how to cut jasmine in the spring, you should learn how to prepare it for the winter.

Wintering

Home jasmine needs the same care as outdoor jasmine. However, the latter must be constantly, every year, prepared for winter. If this is not done, then the plant may die from low temperatures.

To prevent this from happening, you should follow some recommendations:

  • Adult seedlings tolerate the cold season better and do not require additional preparation.
  • The same cannot be said about young bushes. After the jasmine has faded, it is covered with a special material or straw. So the plant will endure the harsh winter well.
  • To preserve the roots of jasmine, before wintering, the soil near the trunk of the plant is dug up with the addition of compost.

If, after a long winter, you decide that the jasmine needs to grow elsewhere, then you can arrange for it to move.

Jasmine transplant

Jasmine is transplanted in the spring. To do this, prepare the soil in a new place in a way known to you and plant a bush. You need to dig a hole the size of root system plants. Everything else must be done in accordance with all the rules and advice. The plant can also be propagated. There are several ways to do this.

reproduction

Jasmine is a plant that can be grown on its own plot. This can be done in several ways:

  • Seeds. They can be planted immediately in open ground or seedlings.
  • cuttings. They are prepared in June. Then planted in a greenhouse or immediately in open ground.
  • Shoots. In the spring, shoots begin to prepare. They are cut from the main trunk. Escape choose the strongest. They let him spend the winter, and on next year put in the place allotted for him.
  • division of the root system. This method is used extremely rarely. This method is used only when they want to quickly grow another jasmine bush. This method is appropriate only in the autumn period.

In the article, we looked at how to plant jasmine in the spring. Use this information as a desktop reminder and you will be able to grow a jasmine garden. The main thing is not to confuse absolutely two different plants- jasmine house and garden. They are completely different from each other and require a different approach to themselves. Remember, jasmine is not only beautiful, but also useful. Do you want to improve your health? Then you simply have to start this miracle plant on your site.

Most gardeners are not so interested complete list garden forms mock orange and their characteristics, as a description of the growing conditions of certain varieties. There are many regions that differ not only weather, but also soil, air pollution. Therefore, it is very important to correctly choose the cultural forms of mock orange, focusing on the climate, soil composition, and humidity required by the plant.

By itself, this plant is unpretentious, can live up to 30 years, feels great in cities, while cleansing the air of dust. Remarkably, jasmine from the olive genus is very similar to it, both have similar flowers and aroma. Take, for example, the common middle lane Russian view, like a coronet mock orange. Its flowering is accompanied by very strong and pleasant aromas, which is not characteristic of all cultural forms of this plant.

Flowering "Chubushnik crown"

Moreover, odors may vary different varieties of this species, of which Aurea of a golden color and undersized Nana stand out especially brightly. Withstands, without freezing, rather strong and prolonged colds down to -25 degrees, at lower temperatures the shoots can freeze up to half of their length. This is a sun-loving drought-resistant shrub, which, however, needs a lot of moisture. Grows on any soil, including heavy clay.

Shrenk's Far Eastern mock orange is completely unpretentious. True, this is just a cultivated species that grows on the Amur, and it does not yet have individual varieties, but in nurseries decorative form plants are already bred as hybrids, crossing with other species. It takes root perfectly in cities, due to the fact that it is practically undemanding to the soil, but it grows best on light and medium sandy and loamy soils with an admixture of organic matter. In cold winters, it can freeze slightly at the ends of the shoots if the temperature drops below -25 degrees, but even if the bush dies completely, the roots will remain viable under the snow cover. In this case, in the spring the plant will throw out shoots again and will bloom in the summer.

Very beautiful numerous varieties and hybrids of small-leaved mock orange, in which flowers with a noticeable aroma or pineapple cover the entire upper part bush, almost completely hiding the green mass. It grows well in any conditions, without requiring special care, however, its winter hardiness is average, and in severe colds the aerial part of the plant freezes completely, therefore it needs to be pruned and covered. If the processes die, then new ones may appear from the trunk in the spring. Shoots grow only 5-6 centimeters a year, so it is better to form a short form from this mock orange. It is best to plant ready-made seedlings, you can try to propagate by cuttings.

Since most varieties are photophilous and only to a small extent shade-tolerant (a slight shadow is allowed, cast on the bush for a small part of the daylight hours), you need to choose an open area for planting. If the plant is constantly covered from the sun by the crowns of surrounding trees, its flowers will be small, and the stems will be very elongated to the sides, which will give it a sloppy look. It should be remembered that clay retains water well, and mock orange does not tolerate moisture stagnant at the roots. Therefore, it is allowed to plant bushes of this plant over high-lying groundwater, and landing in a waterproof heavy clay soil without prior drainage.

We dig pits with a depth of about 60 centimeters and with sides of at least 0.5 meters. If the groundwater is high or there is clay around, be sure to lay a drainage of broken bricks or large gravel on the bottom, and fill it with coarse-grained sand 15 centimeters from above. We leave the distance between plantings, based on the spreading of the variety, but it is better with a margin, about 1.5 meters. For a hedge, you can reduce the gaps between the pits to 0.5–0.6 meters, in which case a fairly dense wall should be obtained and the plants will not interfere with each other. The shrub should be easily accessible to ensure proper care, so in a group planting, try not to isolate one plant by surrounding it with others.

Growing a hedge

It is necessary to root the mock orange, both seedlings and cuttings, in the spring, the best time for this is April, when the soil is already warm enough and late frosts can not be expected. Winter-hardy varieties it is better to plant in the fall, starting from September 10, when the leaf fall ends, the deadline is October 10 or the onset of the first light frost. We place the root ball of the plant in the pit so that the trunk is above the surface of the earth. Further, regardless of the soil, we fill the pit with a fertile layer of soil mixed with peat or humus, since mock orange is very positive about organic matter. Top can be covered with soil from the bottom layer.

When planting in the spring, if the nights are already warm, you can not cover the plant, but in the fall, warming is necessary, preferably with the help of a greenhouse.

Any cultivated species can be sown by collecting the seeds of the plant after flowering and the appearance of pod fruits. Actually, in nature, mock orange reproduces perfectly by self-sowing, so you will only imitate the natural process, helping by loosening the soil and watering. In order to get a positive result, sowing should be carried out in December, before heavy snowfall (watch the weather forecasts), forming high ridges in the fall, before the first frosts, and making a groove along the crest of each.

Chubushnik seeds

If the snow has already fallen, it is raked to the side, and small seeds are thrown into the furrow. Their dimensions are very small, 8000 weigh only 1 gram. Then the beds are covered with spruce branches and covered with snow. Young green shoots up to 10 centimeters long should be taken as cuttings, and they are not cut off, but broken off with a pull so that a piece of bark from the branch remains at the base.

Above the bed, prepared in early spring, a greenhouse is installed, under which the shoots of mock orange are planted for rooting. During the year, future seedlings require regular watering (preferably drip), and in winter - warming. It is possible to transplant a mock orange grown in this way only after a year, when the root system is sufficiently developed.

For each plant, you need to create all the conditions necessary for its growth, so you should ensure proper care from the very first days after planting, both in spring and autumn. In order for the seedling to develop quickly, it is necessary immediately after throwing the pit to pour 2 buckets of water into the hole remaining around the root collar, trying not to erode the soil. From above we cover the soil with peat, which will serve as mulch in the first year of the development of the mock orange.

Chubushnik Care

Further, during the summer, we regularly moisten the ground around the plantings, while watering should be moderate so that the water has time to soak deep into the soil. A month after planting, the mock orange will have a fairly strong root system. Further care will consist in feeding, and the first will need to be done next spring, mixing 15 grams of urea and potassium sulfide, and 30 grams of superphosphate in 10 liters of water. All this is poured under 1 large bush or divided into 2 small ones.

It is very good to fertilize the earth at the beginning of flowering with slurry, making an aqueous solution in a ratio of 1:10, and 1 bucket is poured under each bush instead of the next watering. Flowering and subsequent fruiting with seed pods can somewhat deplete the bush. Therefore, in the fall, after the ovaries crumble, you should pour the mock orange with a solution of 30 grams of superphosphate and 15 grams of potassium sulfate per 10 liters of water.

Pruning as an important part of mock orange care

It should be remembered that green shoots, as a rule, do not tolerate winter very well, unlike already stiff ones, and if weak young shoots have not matured by the first frost, they should be carefully cut. You also need to correctly form a bush so that it grows the way you need, that is, in width or height, for this all side shoots that violate the symmetry of the crown are removed.

Before the cold weather, it is better to shorten the main branches to 2 or 3 strong buds, which in the spring will give a flowering shoot, and then tie them together, placing them vertically. Crown lashing is necessary so that, under the weight of wet snow, the branches do not bend down and freeze into the crust under the bush. In the spring, you need to carefully examine the crown of each bush, because in addition to strong shoots, many short ones may appear that will not bloom. In some cases, too many shoots cause the flowers to be crushed, so short shoots must be cut off.

In the third year, it is imperative to cut off large faded branches, which will be replaced by already significantly regrown stems of the second year. They need to be cut to 2-3 strong buds, repeating the cycle. Such care will allow you to unload the bush, getting beautiful large flowers that will appear on the abandoned branches.

When choosing plants and shrubs for their garden, many gardeners are guided not only by the beauty and decorativeness of the planting material, but also choose it for its fragrant qualities. Such a plant, or a multi-stemmed shrub, is mock orange, which many people mistakenly call jasmine for some similarity and special aroma. Mock orange, in Latin Philadelphus, got its name in honor of Cleopatra's son, Ptolemy Philadelphus, he was very fond of fragrant flowers and incense. In the distant past, smoking pipes were made from twigs and shoots of a plant, hence the name "chubuk". The wood of the shrub is solid, quite suitable for making musical instruments: flutes, pipes, fifes.

Spreading snow-white fountains of fragrant flowers leave no one indifferent. And flowering lasts 4-5 weeks, which is important. If you do not have this plant, but you are interested in the peculiarities of growing this crop, then you need to pay attention to the following biological characteristics. a brief description of: Mock orange blooms in the middle lane from late May to mid-July, white or cream, simple or double flowers. Flower diameter is about 4 cm, collected in heavy brushes of 3-5 pieces. Some types of mock orange are very fragrant, others have a subtle pleasant aroma. Mock orange quickly adapts to conditions environment quite resistant to pest damage. Especially lush bloom gives out in illuminated areas. Shading also tolerates, but the flowering is weak, the bushes begin to become bare from below. Soils are preferred high content humus, with a slightly acidic reaction and well moistened, but without stagnant water. great dignity mock orange is quite available breeding by dividing the bush, layering, shoots, woody and green cuttings, sowing seeds. It is advisable to use cuttings when propagating valuable terry specimens, given that they will easily take root. right time for propagation by cuttings - early spring. But cut them better in autumn and dig in the garden until spring or store in the basement in wet sand at a temperature of 0 C degrees. Usually the bushes bloom in the third year after planting.

And now in order:

  1. Mock orange is photophilous, prefers an open sunny place, protected by buildings or larger trees, does not tolerate cold north winds.
  2. The soil is moisture-intensive (light loam, chernozem), without stagnant water. In hot weather without watering, the plant suffers especially.
  3. A seedling planted in spring or autumn blooms only in the third year, and some species only in the fifth year.
  4. It should be taken into account when forming and pruning a bush that flower buds are laid on the shoots of past years.
  5. shrub at good care grows in one place for 35–40 years.

Mock orange, a completely self-sufficient culture, looks great singly on the lawn, in a group, parterre landing, hedge. If you have a desire to create a secluded fragrant corner in the garden, then plant others nearby flowering shrubs- lilac, weigel,. Powerful bushes with bare skeletal branches can be "closed" with roses, brunner. The mock orange bushes look good against the background of the lawn and are especially decorative with coniferous trees. It is noteworthy that mock oranges are easily propagated by lignified cuttings, the shrub itself gives root growth, the copies you like can be deposited. In nurseries, at garden shows, they sell varietal seedlings that require more careful care, but look great, especially semi-double and double hybrids.

Consider when, where and how best to plant a mock orange. Landing: Best time for planting a plant - early spring and early autumn. In the first case, you need to have time before bud break, in the second, it will take time for the plant (at least a month) to take root (before the onset of frost).

We choose a bright place in the garden - at the fence, the wall of the house, on the south or east side of the gazebo. We take into account that the shrub loves space, free movement of air in the crown, so we avoid densely planted places.

If you have decided on a place, we will consider step by step how to plant a mock orange correctly.

  • landing pit should be at least a depth of a spade bayonet (40-50 cm) and the same diameter.
  • We fill the ground with a specially prepared fertile mixture, which includes leaf (turf) soil and humus. With clay soils, sand will not interfere. Recommended as a mineral supplement wood ash(100 g per well), superphosphate (30 g).
  • With close groundwater presentations, as well as the threat of spring flooding with groundwater, it is recommended to drain the bottom of the planting pit with crushed stone, expanded clay, and broken bricks.
  • We plant a plant with a clod of earth in a "water hole" (a hole filled with water). After planting, it is recommended to "compress" trunk circle and mulch with a dry substrate, peat, humus, garden soil will do.
  • After planting, we cut off the aerial part, leaving 2-3 pairs of buds on each shoot. It should be noted that this will delay flowering, but will contribute to the tillering of young shoots and the faster formation of a bush. You also need to deepen root collar seedling when planting, to stimulate new shoots, but no more than 2–3 cm, because may cause it to rot.

Top dressing. If you pre-filled the hole well with organic matter, then this supply for nutrition will be enough for 2-3 years, and at this time the mock-up is not needed. But you do not need to overdo it with fertilizers and other nitrogen-containing fertilizers, otherwise the bush will begin to fatten, building up shoots to the detriment of flowering. It is recommended to feed mock orange twice - in spring and summer, after flowering.

  • AT spring top dressing nitrogen should prevail: mullein (1:10) is suitable, a solution of chicken manure (1:20) at the rate of a bucket of suspension under a bush. Can be used complex fertilizers(Kemira Fertik).
  • After flowering mock orange are preferred mineral fertilizers with phosphorus and potassium. They are important for laying and ripening flower buds, strengthening the root system: superphosphate - (a tablespoon per bucket), wood ash - (a glass under a bush) or autumn fertilizer for shrubs (Kemira, Agricola).

After such a balanced and the right fertilizer shrub, annual abundant flowering is guaranteed.

pruning

  1. Formative pruning gives the shrub a certain contour. It is recommended to carry out in the spring for 2-3 years after planting, before flowering, and in subsequent years only to maintain a given shape.
  2. Spring pruning is considered sanitary. In the spring, the bush cannot be cut radically for two reasons. Firstly, out of ignorance, you can cut last year's shoots with flower buds. Secondly, it stimulates the growth of shoots, the plant will throw all its forces on it to the detriment of flowering. Immediately after winter, remove frozen and broken branches, cut off the tops on long shoots - to stimulate the growth of side branches.
  3. "Home" for mock orange - summer pruning. This should be done immediately after flowering, so that the shoots of the current year have time to become woody before winter. We remove all weak shoots, leaving 3-4 stems, faded tips of branches, stems growing inside the bush.

We leave the most productive for flowering 6-7 summer shoots. All old shoots should be gradually cut out in the spring, leaving strong young shoots.

Transfer

Thanks to a shallow root system, the mock orange tolerates transplantation without problems, but not in summer, as many believe, but in early autumn or in early spring. The landing pit is prepared according to the same technology as when landing. The day before transplanting, we spill the bush abundantly with water so that the roots come out more easily with a clod of earth. The next step is pruning the bush. We remove almost all the shoots on the stump, except for 3–4 stems, which we cut off, leaving 30–40 cm. The plant transplanted in spring is well watered and fed. After rooting, you can see that several shoots have grown on each stump. After winter, we cut them off, leaving only the strongest ones. If everything is done correctly in the third year, the mock orange will begin to bloom. If the bush is large, when transplanting, you can divide it into several bushes.

Problems of development and pests of mock orange. Disease resistance is another advantage of the plant. Only inexperienced gardeners can face the problems of growing mock oranges.

If you do not bloom mock orange, then:

  1. The plant "fattens" because it is overfed with nitrogen;
  2. The shrub does not have enough light, because it is planted in a shaded place;
  3. The bush was cut too much in the spring and all the forces went into restoration;
  4. Late summer pruning of the shrub, young shoots did not have time to lay flower buds.

Moisture deficiency is the main reason why mock orange leaves curl. In the dry period, the shrub requires abundant watering - 30-40 liters per bush every 2-3 days, and even more often during flowering - it is necessary that the soil does not dry out. Dry autumn is an occasion to make water-charging watering for the winter.

Diseases of the mock orange. Mock orange is rarely affected by fungal diseases, but this happens due to thick planting and waterlogging of the soil. Trim the plant regularly, which will promote free air exchange in the crown zone, protecting the foliage from damage by rust, spotting. To destroy pathogenic microflora, spraying with fungicides is recommended.

Pests. Rainy summer favors the spread of pests - the leaf weevil sucking the juices of the leaves, the bean aphid that inhabits the tops of the shoots, spider mite posing a threat to young growth. Aphids on mock oranges are the most real threat, how to deal with it is determined based on the degree of damage to the bush. A few colonies on the tops are removed mechanically or washed off by dissolving in warm water a piece laundry soap. If this does not help, treat the bush with tobacco dust infusion (10 g / l), mustard powder(20 g/l). One hundred percent effect is given by treating the plant with an insecticide.

Mock oranges delight and delight from the end of May to June with enchanting white flowers and an incredible dizzying aroma. Fragrant white cloud flowering plant attracts the eye and sets to peace. Along with lilacs, these shrubs are loved and very popular in gardening. Mock oranges are found in large sizes, growing up to 5 meters, as well as dwarf forms, quite compact and decorative. They are decorated with rock garden, rockeries or.
