Types of polymer coatings for metal tiles. Which metal tile is better to buy - coated or uncoated? Which metal tile to choose for the roof of a house

Synthetic materials appeared relatively recently - in the second half of the last century. Their invention essentially produced a real revolution - they have many unique properties, which materials of natural origin do not have. Many polymers have become so widespread that they have even entered the daily life majority of the planet's population.

This is, for example, polyurethane and polyester- polymers on the basis of which it is produced huge amount fibers, inorganic resins, fabrics, plastics and coatings. Polyurethane and polyester are similar in their properties. But in some respects, polyurethane is superior to its closest brother.

As already mentioned, a lot of materials are made from polyurethane and polyester (polyester) various materials and products. For example, polyester fabrics are very popular. They are used to make stretch fabric ceilings and clothing for sports and active recreation with unique qualities. One of the fabrics containing polyester fibers is fleece. It perfectly removes moisture from the body and actively evaporates it into the atmosphere, which gives increased comfort during active activities sports. It is not cold in such clothes, they do not stick to the body.

But the same material is widely used for applying polymer coating to sheet roofing products - metal tiles and professional sheet. The same goes for polyurethane. They are similar in appearance, it is difficult to distinguish them by eye. But they have significant differences in properties, and therefore it is necessary to choose sheet roofing material with one type or another in accordance with current needs and specific operating conditions.

First of all , The difference between polyester and polyurethane lies in a number of important quality characteristics - in favor of polyurethane. Polymer polyurethane coating:

  • much more elastic - cracking of the polymer layer for some reason metal tiles practically excluded;
  • high level of adhesion - the polyurethane surface coating is more durable;
  • enviable durability - profiled sheet or metal tiles with a polyurethane layer has long term service, during which the product does not lose its appearance.

These are just some of the most notable benefits of polyurethane coatings. Based on this, you can easily distinguish a roofing material made of polyester from a sheet that looks exactly the same, but only has a polyurethane coating. To do this, just try to scratch the unnecessary piece of sheet a little - of course, without fanaticism, without putting in much effort. The polyurethane coating is only slightly deformed, but the polyester coating can scratch to the metal with the same effort.

However, in many cases, consumers choose corrugated sheets with a polyester polymer coating, since the price of such a roofing product is more affordable. If care is taken during transportation and careful installation, the service life of such material is also significant. True, large dry branches that fell on the roof during a storm can leave noticeable marks on the product, but this is a completely different question.

One of the most common roofing coverings in our country is metal tiles in all their variety of colors and shapes. Such popularity is ensured by worthy technical and performance characteristics, And large selection brands of domestic and foreign production, and relative availability. Relatively recently, one of the main arguments of opponents of this material was its low decorative effect. Today on sale there are a lot of variations not only of all shades of the rainbow, but also interesting textures that allow the imitation to visually get closer to the original. So, what is used to cover the metal base in order to not only protect it from negative influences, but also make it attractive to the consumer? Let’s figure it out with the help of specialists.

Coating functions

The basis for the characteristic profile, which imitates natural ceramic tiles, is most often a galvanized steel sheet; less often, the steel is coated with aluminum zinc - a mixture of aluminum, zinc and silicon. Zinc or aluminum-zinc protects the steel core from corrosion. For greater decorativeness and additional protective properties, zinc is coated with a layer of polymer of a certain thickness.

In a “correct” metal tile, the polymer consists of two layers: a primer, which can be polyester, epoxy, polyurethane or acrylic and provides additional protection, and a layer of colored finishing enamel.

Together with protection, the polymer provides the material with a wide range of colors, gloss or matte, smoothness or relief. In addition to polymers, the metal tile coating pie includes an auxiliary conversion layer (chromates, silicon dioxide or titanium/zirconium fluoride compounds), which improves adhesion and prevents under-film corrosion.

Types of coatings

How long a metal tile will last and how long it will retain its original attractiveness depends on the type of polymer coating, since they differ both visually and in their ability to withstand various influences. Not only the type of coating matters, but also the thickness of the layer.

Fedotova Alesya Technical Director of the company SPETSPROKAT, a manufacturer of steel building materials and LSTK

The polymer coating may vary. If it is polyester, then its thickness should not be less than 25 microns (this is the total thickness of the primer and finishing/colored enamel).

Polyester (polyester) - the most common and accessible view coatings, a “pioneer” of the industry, with a thickness of 25-35 microns, was initially presented only in a smooth, glossy version. Despite all the elegant shades, previous generations of metal tiles with such a coating did not impress the imagination with their decorativeness. Today, manufacturers have significantly expanded their range, adding matte, textured options, from which the roofs have only benefited. Glossy, thin-layer (25 microns) polyester is characterized by resistance to high temperatures, but is less resistant to fading and mechanical damage. Thickened (30-35 microns) matte polyester is more resistant to ultraviolet radiation and temperature changes and is somewhat more difficult to damage.

Polyurethane – coating up to 50 microns thick, often with modifying additives, a large selection of shades and textures. In force raw material base and its thickness is more difficult to scratch during installation or operation than polyester. This coating does not fade, is equally resistant to both summer heat and frost, and is plastic. The domestic market offers various brands of metal tiles with polyurethane coating: the Finnish Pural, which gave the name to this entire class, domestic new products: such as Pur 50, PurPur, Steel cashmere.

Plastisol – a derivative of polyvinyl chloride, characterized by a thick layer – up to 200 microns – and a textured surface. The coating has increased resistance to corrosion, mechanical damage and aggressive environments, but high temperatures have a negative effect on it.

PVDF – a complex composite coating based on polyvinylidene fluoride and acrylic resins with a thickness of 25-40 microns, with a glossy surface. It is highly resistant to all types of exposure: ultraviolet radiation, temperatures, mechanical damage, and deformation.

Naturally, the more durable and stable the polymer coating, the higher the cost of metal tiles, but given that today high-quality polyester can last quite a long time, it does not always make sense to overpay.

It is worth taking into account the region of residence: if nature does not arrange regular strength tests, but pampers you with a mild climate, you don’t have to spend money on a particularly resistant coating.

As for the decorative component, the flight of imagination of manufacturers is almost limitless: offset printing, ceramic coating, texture characteristic of various natural materials. There are even coatings with a “fabric” texture that imitate steel velvet, silk or cashmere, which will delight you with a decent appearance and durability.

Subtleties of choosing metal tiles

While the type of finish makes a huge difference, the base is also important. From quality steel sheet The strength and rigidity of the metal tile depends on it. In many sources, the permissible thickness starts from 0.4 mm, but the quality of such rolled products leaves much to be desired, and experts do not advise dealing with such material.

Fedotova Alesya

First of all, the thickness of the steel base is important - it should not be less than 0.5 mm. It is this thickness that guarantees the necessary rigidity of the profile. Here it should also be said about tolerances: state standards for cold-rolled and galvanized steel allow a run-up of up to 0.08 mm in both directions, but these figures relate only to rolling equipment of metallurgical plants, so do not allow the seller to pass off metal with a thickness of 0.45 mm as metal 0.5 mm thick. Reducing the thickness of the metal by a third reduces the rigidity of the structure by 65%.

The corrosion resistance of metal tiles depends on the zinc coating, and this is another the most important parameter, which you need to pay attention to when choosing.

Fedotova Alesya

The mass of zinc should be at least 140 g/m², but now there is a tendency to make the metal thinner and cheaper. Previously, the state standard for galvanized steel did not even provide for classification for smaller amounts of zinc.

Conscientious manufacturers who have nothing to hide mark their products with the name of the enterprise, the thickness of the metal, the mass of zinc, the type, name and thickness of the polymer coating, and the date of production.

In addition to the type of polymer coating, the thickness of the steel base and zinc layer, the manufacturer’s warranty is also important, but not everyone understands what it means. In the case of metal tiles from responsible manufacturers, the guarantee covers several characteristics: E5. The guarantee applies to the following territories: altitude above sea level - no more than 900 m, distance from the seashore - no less than 3 km. Such limitations are typical when providing a warranty for products of this class. We have a warranty period for safety decorative properties is 10 years.

Of course, it matters how many years roofing will require reconstruction or complete replacement, but what the roof will look like over the years is also of interest. It is necessary to approach the choice of metal tiles comprehensively, taking into account all aspects and attractive appearance no less important than strength and durability.

Due to its light weight, metal tiles are in maximum demand in, and they were chosen by the craftsman who built them. The video is about the production of metal tiles and its features.

We compare one model of metal tiles with different coatings

Which metal tile to choose with a glossy finish or a matte finish? Very often our clients ask this question, both to themselves and to us. If you visit our products section, you will find a position in it - metal tiles, and in it there are two subsections Monterrey polyester and Monterrey matte polyester. As you can see from the banner of these sections, matte metal tiles are more expensive than glossy ones, let's talk about the main differences between these materials.

Matte and standard (gloss) polyester

We would like to explain to you the main differences between the coatings in simple language, but we cannot do without resorting to the language of terminology and a certain abstruseness. So.

Coating standard polyester And matte polyester are produced on the basis of one technology - polyester-based coating. That is, in general, one technology, but with certain features.

Standard polyester in the process of its production receives following parameters– withstands high air temperatures and resists corrosion. This material is durable and its service life is from 10 to 30 years. True, these figures are relevant under one condition, that the zinc content of this metal is at least 200 g/m2.

Matte polyester- everything seems to be the same as standard polyester, only the appearance is completely different. The surface of matte polyester has microscopic irregularities and due to this, sunlight is reflected differently and the surface does not shine. This surface has the appearance of a more natural (natural) material. The matte coating itself has a thicker layer (35 microns), although chemical composition, same as standard polyester. If the main parameters of matte polyester have maximum indicators - metal thickness and zinc content, then such a coating will last about 40 years.

As you can see, with the general technology based on polyester, the material has different period service and naturally has a difference in price.

Matte the material is more expensive with more high performance, this is understandable, because it is intended mainly for roofing.

Standard ( gloss) polyester, a material with lower technical performance and, as a result, cheaper.

Based on these findings, a simple conclusion can be drawn - matte polyester is better than gloss. But such conclusions can be drawn in a simple world, but our world has changed, the main thing in it is marketing and the ability to sell, so everything has become a little more confusing and complicated.

The complexity of the situation is that material manufacturers understand that consumers want higher quality material, but at a low price. And they learned to give it to the consumer, or rather, to create the illusion that they provide such material.

Therefore, there is matte polyester on the market with a thickness of 0.45 mm and a zinc content of 140 g/m2. This material looks like a high-quality raw material, but it is not entirely suitable for a durable roof - this is its disadvantage. But on the other hand, in our country, where the construction of fences from corrugated sheets is developed, this is an ideal material for constructing fences.

What coating to choose for metal tiles

If you choose a material for metal tiles for a residential building, then it is clear that its parameters should be to the maximum. But there is another important component here - price. And in this matter, everyone makes their own decision.

Matte material theoretically has best performance, but market realities show that this is not always the case.

Gloss or standard polyester is more attractive in price, but if you find such material in a thickness of 0.5 mm and with a zinc content of 225-275 g/m2, then you can say with confidence that it will be in no way inferior to matte polyester.

So, which metal tile is better - matte or glossy - can only be determined by a quality certificate for this material, the main thing is that it is genuine.

For you, as a client who chooses metal tiles for the roof and takes the quality of this coating seriously, it is also a good idea to remember about the appearance of the roof, because the most main criterion when choosing metal tiles, you should like them.

Metal tiles in black, a rarity on our roofs

Matte or glossy metal tiles – which is better?

Metal tiles are very popular in the roofing materials market. Its advantages include a solid appearance, reasonable price-quality ratio. It looks equally good on modern buildings and on ancient buildings. If you have chosen metal tiles, you have to decide which variety to choose - glossy or matte? Let's look at the differences between these two types of coverage.

Comparison of glossy and matte coatings of metal tiles

Both types of coatings are polyester, produced using the same technology, and have the same chemical composition. However, matte metal tiles are more expensive than glossy ones. What is the reason? Differences between matte and glossy metal tiles:

  • The matte finish has textured surface irregularities. As a result, it reflects the sun's rays less and has no shine.
  • The thickness of the rough coating is greater than the glossy one and is 35 microns.

The cost of metal tiles is influenced not only by the coating, but also by the thickness of the steel sheet and zinc protective layer. The larger they are, the more expensive metal tiles cost. Therefore, the quality of the roofing material will be best when combining a rough coating with the maximum acceptable values thickness of steel sheet and zinc layer. The cost of such metal tiles is also significantly higher.

At the same time, manufacturers produce matte metal tiles with a sheet thickness of 0.45 mm and a zinc content of less than 200 g per square meter. It looks expensive, but costs much less. Its service life is also shorter. Therefore, in order to choose a high-quality roofing material, you need to familiarize yourself with its technical characteristics specified in the quality certificate. Metal tiles with a glossy finish, but with a sheet thickness greater than 0.45 and a zinc content of more than 200 g per square meter will not be inferior in quality to rough.

The choice of buyers is significantly influenced by the appearance of the roofing material. A house with a roof made of rough metal tiles looks more solid and presentable. But not all buildings need this. Therefore, when choosing the type of metal tile, you should give preference to quality and durability, as well as the best combination technical characteristics and cost. After all, the roof must reliably protect the house from any weather.

Which metal tile is better - what to look for when choosing

Metal tiles are a widely used roofing material made from galvanized steel. It looks great in appearance and follows the relief of ceramic tiles, however, it has significantly less weight, is able to withstand large mechanical loads and has high resistance to moisture.

All these qualities make metal tiles indispensable for use in the construction of private houses. This article will focus on which metal tiles to choose and what points to pay attention to when choosing a material in each specific case.

Structure of a metal tile sheet

Metal tiles are ideal for the construction of private houses, country cottages and small townhouses. Due to its low cost, long service life and high technical characteristics, the material is becoming preferable to slate, roofing felt or ceramic tiles.

The metal tile sheet has the following structure:

  • Made from high quality steel. The thickness of the steel reaches 0.45-0.9 mm. An indicator of 0.5-0.6 mm is sufficient to give the roofing material sufficient strength and load-bearing capacity.
  • Zinc coating. This coating improves the anti-corrosion properties of the material. A zinc coating layer of 275 g/m2 is considered normal.
  • Primer mixture. A primer on both sides of the sheet is necessary to improve adhesion with the polymer or paint applied afterwards.
  • Decorative layer. A decorative polymer layer is applied to the sheet on the front side. Any decorative coating enhances the protection of the sheet from water and mechanical influences, and also gives the material a certain color.
  • Varnish coating. WITH back side A layer of varnish is applied to the sheet to protect it from rusting.

What types of coverage are there?

When deciding which metal tile is better, it is worth keeping in mind that its cost and technical characteristics, as a rule, will depend on the type of decorative layer. Once upon a time, paints were used to cover metal tiles, but due to their poor resistance to sunlight and temperature changes, they were replaced polymer materials, which gave the material more high term operation.

The following types of polymers are used as a protective layer:

  1. Polyester. This polymer has high protection against ultraviolet radiation, temperature differences, and also good anti-corrosion qualities. You can obtain matte and glossy coatings suitable for use in regions with any climate.
  2. Pural. The pural layer is distinguished by its high strength and long service life - largely due to the fact that cracks do not occur in the material during bending.
  3. Plastisol. Materials coated with plastisol have a more pleasant appearance. A thick layer of plasticizer makes it possible to create embossing, improves stability and increases the service life of the roof.
  4. PVDF. This polymer gives metal tiles a metallic effect. The highest strength and resistance of the material to aggressive external environments makes possible use it for industrial purposes.

If you have not yet decided which metal tile is better - matte or glossy, then keep in mind that, in any case, it is better if the material is polymer-coated. Such metal tiles cost a little more than the painted version, however, its technical characteristics significantly exceed those of cheaper analogues.

What parameters affect quality - which one is better to choose?

Currently in construction stores you can meet large number various metal tiles, both in price and quality. To better understand which metal tile is best for your roof, study in detail all the technical and operational characteristics. They will tell you about the quality. Remember that the most expensive product does not always have best quality. Also take into account the ratings of metal tile manufacturers.

In addition, you should take into account the following characteristics:

  • Thickness. High-quality products must have a thickness of more than 0.5 mm. Varieties of metal tiles with greater thickness have increased strength, however, they have more weight. This parameter should be taken into account during design rafter system roofs.
  • Zinc coating thickness. There are three categories of this indicator on the market: “economy”, “standard” and “premium”. A zinc coating thickness of 275 g/m2 is considered sufficient. The higher this value, the longer such material will last, and the more expensive it is.
  • Type of decorative layer. There are brands of metal tiles with paint and polymer coating. It can be either glossy or matte tiles. The painted version will cost less, but will not last as long as polymer-coated material.
  • Does the material have a certificate of conformity?. The manufacturer must provide the entire list necessary documents, indicating the quality of metal tiles. Otherwise, it’s better not to trust such a manufacturer.

It is worth noting that the best proof of the quality of a material is its appearance. Before purchasing, be sure to visually inspect the metal tiles. It should not have chips, scratches or uneven edges, which are likely to cause early damage to the roof.

Glossy or matte - which metal tile is better?

What is the first thing people notice when driving past a house? On the roof! If it is well-groomed, modern, without black streaks or cracks, passers-by will immediately understand that this cottage belongs to thrifty and knowledgeable people.

Metal tiles - roof decoration

The construction industry offers a huge selection of roofing materials, but if you have a pitched roof, then the optimal option, both in terms of quality and price, is metal tiles. It has a quite decent appearance, its service life is tens of years, good producers and serious sellers provide a 7-15 year warranty (subject to compliance with installation requirements).

In Belarus, Grand Line metal tiles, which are produced at the Russian Metalist plant, are in great demand. Its advantages:

  • affordable price;
  • a wide selection of collections of various shades and with different profile patterns;
  • use of high-quality hot-dip galvanized sheet steel;
  • usage polymer coatings, which do not fade under the influence of solar radiation.

Grand Line metal tiles in Minsk are supplied directly from the manufacturer, so prices are lower than the market average.

Glossy metal tiles

Several layers of coatings are applied to the corrugated sheet to improve its anti-corrosion properties. The gloss glows brightly in the sun, making your home stand out. Even if you look at satellite images on Google maps, then houses with a glossy roof shine in the sun.

Glossy polyester paint is not just a fad; it reflects a large percentage of thermal energy, so the roof does not overheat on hot days. The only negative is that any damage will be noticeable.

Matte tiles

The difference is that polyester paint with metal shavings is used for painting. The roof will not shine so noticeably under the sun's rays, but the shavings will give the coating extra strength and resilience.

Another big plus matte metal tiles- color fastness to fading. If we talk about prices, they are approximately the same. The choice depends entirely on the owners of the house. When ordering roofing, pay attention to the following facts:

  • steel thickness - not less than 0.5 mm;
  • preferably a well-known brand: Metalprofile, Grand Line, Pruszynski, Ruukki, etc.;
  • durable polyester coating.

Metal tiles began to be used as a roofing material not so long ago. But this material has already proven itself from the best side. Metal tiles are a practical roofing covering that is lightweight, easy to install and cost-effective.

During the construction process, contractors will have to consider several options for metal tile products and, based on the performance properties of each type, make their final choice. In this article we will describe what types of metal tiles there are.

Metal tiles - varieties

Types of tiles vary depending on:

  • base material;
  • coatings;
  • shape and profile height.

The base of the tiles can be steel or aluminum. Most manufacturers prefer the first type of material. The sheet thickness does not exceed 0.5 mm. To counteract corrosion, the steel base is covered with a protective shell of basalt chips, aluzinc or zinc. An aluminum base is a more expensive solution, but at the same time, such tiles are lightweight and durable. Therefore, they are often made for home use. This basis are also covered with protective agents.

Besides, modern manufacturers metal tiles using innovative approaches Another type of base is offered in production - copper.

Metal tiles - types of coatings

The type of metal tile coating also plays an equally important role.

Among the main materials are:

  • polyester (glossy or matte);
  • plastisol;
  • pural;
  • PVF-2;
  • Terra Plegel.

The most common metal tiles are coated with polyester or plastisol. Less commonly used are matte polyester and pural. The least widespread are tiles coated with PVF-2. The reason for this situation lies in the disadvantages and advantages of each material, high cost and availability on the market.

We list the main properties of each type of coating:

  • Polyester . It is characterized by low cost. The material is sprayed onto the front side of the metal tile sheet. As mentioned above, there are matte and glossy types. has a thickness of 25 microns. This coating is quite sensitive to mechanical stress and is subject to gradual burnout. At the same time, glossy polyester is the only type of coating that allows you to paint tiles. Matte polyester has a thickness of 35 microns. This coating is more resistant to mechanical stress.
  • Plastisol . Like the previous type of coating, it has a low cost. The polymer is applied by rolling plastic film onto a steel surface. Metal tiles coated with plastisol are excellent for regions with humid and temperate climate. At the same time, it is not recommended to use such metal tiles in regions with sudden temperature changes.
  • Pural coating . The basis of the material is polyurethane. The thickness of the protective layer of 50 microns allows it to withstand mechanical stress well, ultraviolet radiation and precipitation. The cost of pural is not too different from plastisol. The only drawback of this polymer coating is the small selection of possible roof colors (more details: " ").
  • PVF-2 (polyvinyl fluoride). It has the richest color range among all presented types of coatings. Able to withstand high temperatures and does not lose its color. The purchase of tiles with such a coating is carried out only to order. The cost of tiles coated with PVF-2 is more expensive than when using plastisol or polyester.
  • Terra Plegel . The coating is almost never used on the domestic market. This material gives metal tiles the appearance of a natural clay roof. Apply by spraying quartz sand onto molten plastisol followed by application of a paint layer. Due to this method of application, the weight of the tiles increases by 40-60% (be sure to read: " ").

Profile shape and height

Depending on the profile shape, the following types of metal tiles are distinguished:

  • with a symmetrical wave;
  • with an asymmetrical wave.

Tile manufacturers use different stamps, the depth of which affects the height of the roof profile.

Standardly, there are 3 types of metal tile profile depths:

  • 28 mm;
  • 45 mm;
  • 52 mm.

The metal tile with the smallest profile is called “flat”. This material is most often used when constructing a metal roof with your own hands. The wave pitch of metal tiles affects the rigidity of the sheets.

Storage conditions

Metal tiles with a polymer coating should be stored in certain conditions. After purchasing, the tiles should be properly transported to the place of storage and construction, and then the roofing should be installed.

We list the basic rules that help protect material during storage:

  • It is recommended to store sheets in a closed, dry room;
  • contact of tiles with chemicals, sunlight, water, and soil should be avoided;
  • tiles purchased in original packaging should be stored on a flat surface. At the same time, it is laid on a beam 20 cm thick, and the interval between the beams should be about 50 cm;
  • If the tiles will be stored for more than one month, then the sheets should be laid out with dry slats. The height of such a stacking standard can reach 70 cm.

Installation of metal tiles, detailed video instructions:

Separately, mention should be made of the protective film that is applied to the surface of the tiles to protect them (not to be confused with polymer coatings):

  • The shelf life of metal tiles with a protective film applied is 1 month;
  • protective coating should be protected from exposure sun rays, otherwise, under the influence of temperatures, it may melt into the sheet and removing the film will not be so easy;
  • The protective film is removed at average air temperatures. When working in low or high temperatures there is a very high probability of leaving pieces of film and adhesive on the surface of the tiles.

If all storage conditions for metal tiles are met, they will retain their operational properties long enough. This allows you to organize the construction of a complex rafter system without regard to time constraints.

Metal tiles, the types of which were mentioned today, allow you to create durable roof, with high durability and efficiency. Thanks to the variety of protective materials and profile shapes, you can choose the roofing covering that can fully satisfy your requirements.
