Terry tulips: early and late varieties, photo with names. Choosing terry late tulips Late flowering terry tulips

Flowers such as tulips are undoubtedly among the most attractive and famous. For the first time, the bulbs of this plant were brought to Europe from Turkey, as one of the ambassadors of Austria managed to send them to Vienna. After receiving the bulbs, the general manager of the Viennese garden began actively breeding and growing tulips.

Already later great amount variety of varieties was obtained by breeders in the Netherlands. Therefore, it is this state that is considered the birthplace of tulips, despite the fact that it is not actually one. But Holland can rightfully be proud of the title of the Land of Tulips, since it was there that gardeners and botanists have developed and bred more than 1,500 thousand completely new varieties.

Tulip classification

Since there are a huge number of types of tulips and every year their number only increases, the list international classification constantly updated and supplemented. Tulips are divided into several classification groups according to their characteristics, which differ from each other in general characteristics, ripening time and visual perception of the plant. The main groups are divided into early flowering and late flowering, however, in addition to them, there are still flowers with an average flowering period and hybrids. Today we are interested in a certain variety of these wonderful plants, so we will further consider terry tulips - varieties, photos and their features.

The height of terry early tulips is small, about 30 cm, therefore, despite the beautiful large flowers, the diameter of which reaches 12 cm, they are not used for cutting. This is due to the fact that the selection of many plants is now moving towards the maximum combination of expressive qualities.

A few words about care

One of the highlights of tulip breeding is the annual transplant. Terry tulip bulbs give in small quantities, but gardeners are attracted by the fact that they are not capricious in care. To preserve the variety, they should be dug up every year. After the bulbs have been removed from the soil, they should be dried, the old layers cleaned and stored. The result of flowering, as well as the general condition of the plant in the future, directly depend on compliance with the rules for the conservation of bulbs and temperature regime, which should not exceed the mark of 25 degrees with a plus sign.

Among the thousands of varieties of tulips, there are those that invariably attract attention, causing surprise and admiration. Naturally, each gardener has his own preferences, but many people like terry and fringed varieties. Early terry varieties are also beautiful in their own way. They are usually not very high, so they are especially good on rocky hills, in curb plantings and landscape compositions. But terry late varieties have a number of advantages over them. Fortunately, in Russian there is a rather capacious and correct name for such varieties - densely doubled, i.e. having 18-20 petals or more in each glass. AT English language all terry and semi-double forms of plants are indicated by one word double, which literally means “double”, since the first terry varieties, apparently, simply had twice the number of petals.

Group of terry late tulips (Doublelate), number 11 in the garden classification of tulips, combines varieties of diverse origin, which are characterized by large, about 10 cm in diameter, double flowers with wide rounded petals. Similar appearance with peony flowers, they are also called peony. Unlike terry early varieties, blooming already at the end of April, terry late ones bloom 8-12 days later and longer, up to 3 weeks, sometimes capturing the beginning of June. They are more powerful and tall, up to 50-60 cm tall, making them good for cutting and forcing. The flowers are more diverse in color (white, pink, apricot, yellow, red, purple, purple - almost black, there are two-color varieties). Some of the varieties have retained a wonderful aroma (Angelique, Alegretto, Cream Upstar, Monsella).

Terry late tulips appeared a very long time ago, immediately after the Dutch “tulip mania” subsided (the first variety was described in 1665), but none of the oldest varieties has survived to this day. Now the varieties bred since the middle of the last century have the main distribution - Angelique, Carnaval de Nice, Lilac Perfection, Maywonder, Miranda, Monsella, Mount Tacoma, Renown Unique, Uncle Tom, Upstar, Wirosa. But in recent times new, worthy of attention, namely densely double varieties have appeared, which, no doubt, can take the most advantageous places in your spring garden.

Such varieties should first of all include the Double Beauty of Apeldoorn variety, which was also given the original name Sun Lover or “Loving the Sun” for its orange-yellow, with red strokes, color. Unlike other varieties, the petals tightly cover the center of the flower, which resembles the shape of a fluffy ranunculus or a charmingly scruffy rose. The stems are high, 50 cm.

No less beautiful is the new and improved Orange Angelique, derived from the well-known and well-established pale pink Angelique. Many will like the red-burgundy variety Dream Touch (Dream Touch) and its white counterpart White Touch (White Touch). The first one is more than 10 cm in diameter, deep purple, with a graceful silvery-white edging that emphasizes the multiplicity of petals. The second has white petals with a greenish "backlight" at the base.

Very interesting is the bright red densely double variety Redwood (Redwood) with satin petals of a deep red color. In addition, it has a steady tendency to multi-flowering, with good agricultural technology it is able to produce 3-4 flowers on each peduncle, forming a truly "Red Forest" in a flower bed!

The yellow-orange-red variety Artist Double (Gudoshnik Double) is expressive and bright. All three colors in different combinations of tones and semitones are present in him at the same time! old, good famous variety Gudoshnik gave a double sport, which the Dutch producers, without thinking twice, called Gudoshnik Double. Of course, the name is a little funny for our ears, but the tulip itself is very beautiful.

Blue Diamond - the most "blue" of the double late tulips, purple-violet in color, on strong stems. Able to bloom up to 3 weeks. Height 40 cm. Good both in the garden and in the cut.

Mascotte - lush double flowers with a delicate fringe along the edge, bewitching with purple-bluish undertones. Height 40 cm.

Sensual Touch (Sensual touch) - flowers are unusual, reminiscent of begonias, orange and apricot hues, with a fringe and a thin matte edging of the petals. Height 40 cm. Resistant to rain. Exceptional for cutting, stands in water for up to 10 days.

Charming Lady, another stunning sport from Angelica, is 45cm high with flowers 12-14cm in diameter. Fragrant.

Sweet Desire - A romantic combination of soft lavender, pink and white tones with fresh green flashes on the outer petals. It is especially beautiful from above, when a flattened shape and a dense white center of the flower are visible. Good cut, height 45 cm Flowering in the middle, from early to mid-May.

Queensland is a luxurious tulip, reminiscent of pink marzipan in a melting milky white glaze, with a thick fringe along the edge of the petals. Height 40-50 cm.

Cartouche - fragrant, terry, colors Ivory, with a "fluorescent" crimson border that increases as it blooms. In sunny weather, the flowers are wide open. Height 40 cm. Great for cutting, keeps fresh for up to 10 days in water.

Brest is a deep pink luminous fringed tulip with a white border.

Drumline is a peony-shaped tulip, 50 cm high. The petals are deep pink with a white border.

Baccara - has the reverse combination of colors - the petals are white, with an irregular bright pink border. Exceptionally dense, densely "stuffed" flower. Great for borders and flower beds, as well as for cutting;

Yellow Mountain is a luxury sport from Mount Tacoma. A dreamy pale lemon color with a subtle green flame on the outer petals. A slightly tousled flower really resembles the shape of a peony. One of the largest among late terry, flower diameter 10-12 cm, height 45 cm. Excellent cut.

Please note that many of these varieties are also fringed, with a fringe of stiff, needle-like outgrowths along the edges of their petals. different lengths sticking out in all directions. At the top of the petals, the fringe is usually thickest and longest. It is also present in supernovas - canary yellow, with a slight "spray" of orange in the center, Artichoke variety and Dutch Pioneer orange with a yellow border.

The variegated pink-red variety Eternal Flame (Eternal Flame) is extremely interesting. It has not only beautiful and original flowers in shape, but also spectacular foliage edged with pale pink stripes. This is a low mid-late variety, up to 30 cm. The color of the flowers resembles a bright pink-red lipstick. Buds and then outer petals - with white and green flames. An exclusive variety, in addition, having a delicious aroma.

As you can see, often new varieties, in addition to increased terryness, simultaneously demonstrate the presence of other valuable features - two-tone, fringed, multi-flowered, variegated. The selection of many plants is now moving along the path of combining the greatest number of expressive features.

Terry tulips, like other varieties with unusually shaped flowers - fringed, parrot, etc., are usually planted in the foreground of flower beds, mixborders or near paths, as well as in containers and flowerpots so that you can admire each flower up close.

If the flower beds with tulips are large enough, then their uniformly green color, before the development of buds, can be diversified by replanting early undersized varieties with decorative variegated (variegated) foliage with white-cream, white-pink or yellow edging. In this sense, Albion Star, China Town, Donna Bella, Gluck, Green River, Oratorio, red riding Hood, Rosario, Plaisir, Sweet Lady and especially Praestans Unicum, Fire of Love and Multi Orange Design.

Between mid-late and late terry tulips, it is good to plant a low anemone blooming at the same time - tender anemone (Anemonablanda). And multi-colored or plain crocuses will effectively and stylishly decorate your flower bed in April - early May. Arabis, violki, muscari and saxifrage blooming at this time can be used as ground cover and framing plants for a flower bed. All of the plants listed above can be combined in mixed mixborders by adding some bright daffodils, hazel grouses, primroses or various small bulbs to them. Tulips go well with yellow and white undersized and medium-sized daffodils, muscari and crocuses, primroses, forget-me-nots, various stonecrops, arabis, saplings, and especially pansies and daisies.

The rules for planting terry late tulips do not differ from the rest. Planting depth - about 2.5-3 bulb heights, if you count from its bottom. The distance between plants depends on the purpose of planting and varies from 10 to 12 cm. Tulips form numerous roots in a layer 10-15 cm thick, so it is better to prepare a layer of earth for their planting at least 25-30 cm deep. For better flowering next spring under the autumn digging contribute phosphorus-potassium fertilizers. Usually, under all bulbs, it is recommended to add coarse-grained river sand with a low content of clay inclusions, as well as well-rotted compost and dolomite flour for deoxidation.

If the spring turned out to be dry, planting tulips should be watered fairly regularly and plentifully. In Holland, it is believed that summer with moderately heavy rainfall for tulips is a blessing. However, they are grown there only in a 30-kilometer coastal zone, on sandy and sandy soils. In our areas with a high content of clay fraction, excess moisture can lead to a completely opposite result, so it is advisable to add more coarse-grained river sand and ensure good moisture and air permeability of the soil.

During the period of development and growth of buds, plant care consists in shallow loosening of the topsoil and weed control. For top dressing, it is best to use special fertilizers for bulb crops. Large heavy flowers of double late tulips can lie down from wind and rain and even break off. However, new varieties have stronger stems and are generally wind resistant. It is important for them to observe agricultural technology so that the flowers fully reveal all the decorative features, and the main quality for which they are grown is terry.
