Tomato tree growing at home. Features of greenhouse cultivation. At home

In the nature around us, there is such a miracle as a tomato tree. At the same time, its natural form is a small tree, but the artificial, hybrid form is a real tree octopus.

A few years ago, the fruits of the so-called tomato tree(otherwise, tomato tree) - beetroot cyphomandra. In appearance, they were very similar to cream tomatoes, but their color varied from dark red to orange-yellow, but the taste was a combination of tomato flavor with tropical fruit aromas. Tsifomandra soon fell in love with domestic gardeners, especially since low and unpretentious trees grow well in tubs at home, and their fruits delight their owners with their pulp almost all year round.

But if the cyphomandra can be attributed to tomatoes only on the principle of botanical kinship (both plants belong to the nightshade family), then the new Sprut F1 tomato hybrid, bred by Israeli breeders, can bring up to 1.5 tons of tomatoes per plant per year! Such a tomato tree alone is able to occupy a large greenhouse, spreading its crown over the entire area of \u200b\u200bits roof, and even walls to boot.

Natural tomato tree - Cyphomandra

Cyphomandra is a very attractive tree with fragrant large, slightly pubescent leaves. At the base, they have a heart-shaped shape, but at the top they are pointed, reaching a length of 35 cm, and a width of up to 12 cm.

Fragrant flowers with 5 pale pink or lavender petals in a purple-green calyx, arranged in small clusters. Beautiful yellow stamens protrude above the petals.

Outwardly, the cyphomandra is a typical nightshade plant with large, almost eggplant-like leaves, a strong woody trunk, flowers resembling potatoes, and fruit clusters, like a tomato. The term of his life reaches 10 years, bears fruit from the second year of life.

In nature, there are cyphomanders up to 5.5 m high, but the kadochny culture is represented mainly by graceful trees 2-2.5 m high.

Cyphomandra fruits: use and varieties

The main decoration of the cyphomandra is smooth ovoid fruits, located on long legs singly or in groups of 3 to 12 pieces. The fruit can reach a length of up to 10 cm and a width of up to 5 cm. Purple-red, orange-yellow, sometimes even striped fruits look very aesthetically pleasing during the fruiting period. With a tough and inedible skin, their flesh has a juicy and firm outer part, as well as a soft and sweet (or sweet and sour) core, reminiscent of a combination of tomato and melon flavors.

Raw fruits, previously cut into two parts and, if desired, sprinkled with sugar, are eaten with a spoon. Salads, sauces and compotes are also prepared from them. The fruits of the cyphomandra are dietary product rich in pectin. They have gelling properties and are widely used for the preparation of sweets, jellies and jams. Cyphomandra contains a lot of vitamins A, C, B6, as well as iron and potassium. The fruits of the tomato tree are useful for people with high blood pressure.

The following varieties of cyphomandra are known:

  • goldmine;
  • Ecuadorian Orange;
  • Oratia Red;
  • Inca Gold;
  • Rothamer;
  • yellow;
  • solid gold;
  • Ruby Red.

The Inca Gold variety is distinguished by very beautiful orange fruits with apricot flavor, which make excellent desserts. And from the oval, yellow-golden and very juicy fruits of the Solid Gold variety, excellent soups and mashed potatoes are obtained. The most famous variety Rothamer from California has very beautiful bright red fruits with golden flesh and a sweet taste.

Planting and breeding cyphomandra

One Cyphomandra fruit produces so many seeds that a small plantation can be established. Cyphomandra germinates well even from seeds obtained from store-bought fruits. Its seeds are rounded and flat like seeds. bell pepper.

To stimulate the seeds for germination, it is recommended to subject them to a "temperature shock" - after separating the seeds from the pulp, they are kept for a day at the bottom of the refrigerator at +5 ° C. If desired, pre-sowing treatment can also be performed by soaking and treating with growth stimulants. But you can limit yourself to daily temperature exposure.

The seeds are planted shallowly, a maximum of 1 cm. optimum temperature at 24-28 ° C shoots appear in a couple of weeks.

The propagation of cyphomandra by cuttings rooted in water and in the soil substrate is also very common. Clear water allows you to monitor the rooting process: if a callus has formed and root tubercles have appeared, then it’s time to plant in the soil.

It is preferable to grow plants in a tub culture from cuttings, as the trees are more compact and bushy, and the branches are low-lying. In addition, with this method, varietal characteristics are more reliably transmitted. Cuttings are taken from 1-2-year-old branches and easily rooted in boiled or melted water. In general, after 6-7 years of growth, the cyphomandra should be destroyed and renewed from the cutting.

Tomato tree care

Caring for the crop is not burdensome and consists of monthly feeding, pruning, maintaining the temperature and humidity conditions.

Although the tomato tree grows up to 2.5 m, a tub under it is taken wide and low due to the superficial root system. Be sure to provide a deep pan, where watering is carried out, and drainage holes for good root ventilation. Stagnation of water is unacceptable, otherwise the young cyphomandra may die.

Annual pruning of fruit-bearing branches is required to stimulate the growth of new fruit-bearing shoots. Since pollination is carried out by wind and insects, during the flowering period, you need to turn on the fan for a couple of minutes every day or gently shake the tree.

Selection tomato tree Octopus F1

The name Octopus was given to the hybrid tomato tree for a reason, because, like the ocean octopus, it can braid the entire frame of the greenhouse with its branches.

However, such a giant can grow only in a year-round heated greenhouse and only on hydroponic agricultural technology. Tomato tree Octopus is very voracious and at the same time quite sensitive to various diseases.

Under a greenhouse roof, in 1-1.5 years, a seemingly ordinary tomato bush becomes a whole tomato tree up to 5 m tall and a crown with a diameter of up to 6 m. Up to 1.5 tons of tomatoes are harvested annually from one tomato tree.

Amateur gardeners today have access to both the seeds of a natural tomato tree - cyphomandra, and a tomato tree octopus F1. When choosing between them, remember that the larger the harvest you expect, the more you will have to incur labor and material costs to achieve it.

Honestly, this is just a small miracle, by golly, I have never seen tomato trees before, now I want to plant this in my country house, because this is an unreal thing and all my neighbors will be jealous when they see this beauty from me)

Irina 04/13/2015

For the first time I see this, truly a miracle of selection! I would very much like to try to plant such tomatoes in my greenhouse, at least for the sake of interest. Only here we always have problems with heating, and even ordinary tomatoes suffer from different diseases every year more than in other regions — the area is like that, or what, I can’t even understand. Therefore, of course there is a desire, but there is little hope for a favorable outcome of the case and a harvest.
By the way, I didn’t even see such tomatoes being sold, probably, among ordinary lovers of the garden and vegetable garden there is not very high demand, since such a “miracle” is capricious. 11/25/2015

I would like to ask a question to gardeners who have experience in growing this variety of tomato - where can I buy tomato tree seeds? I read a lot about him, but there are no seeds in any store. Can you write it down somewhere? How it tolerates heat, I live in a rather hot climate, I plant tomatoes in the ground without a greenhouse, there is enough water for irrigation, the soil is sandy.

Many summer residents would probably like to grow a tomato tree in their area. After all, photographs of this miracle, which are available in large numbers in social networks and on thematic portals, can impress even a seasoned gardener. Only from one such "tree", grown with strict observance required technology, you can collect up to 1000 kg of tomatoes. And even this is far from the limit.

Basic techniques

The tomato tree, which is grown in open field It is the most in a simple way, will give a rich harvest when using the so-called EM technology. In this case, the plant is planted in a barrel, and the crop is harvested from the end of June to October.

The second method involves growing for one and a half years in a greenhouse. When using this technique, a real tomato tree grows, with a crown that occupies a huge area.

Outdoor cultivation

To receive you need to good harvest in this case EM technology is usually used. This is the name of the method of growing plants based on a special biofertilizer containing great amount beneficial aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. At the same time, the bush itself is planted not in a garden bed or in a hole, but in a barrel. The latter can be replaced with a large polypropylene bag.

We select seeds

A real huge tomato tree in a greenhouse is usually grown using the Sprut F1 variety. In open ground, small "trees" can also be grown from other varieties of tomatoes. The main thing is that they are tall. Very well suited, for example, the same bull heart, De-Barao, etc.

Transplanting

Tomato seeds for growing "trees" in boxes should be sown as early as possible. For middle lane Russia the best term will be February. Some summer residents plant seedlings for a barrel even at the end of January.

Seeds prepare in the usual way. That is, they are disinfected and soaked. The picking of the grown seedlings is carried out in sufficiently large containers. In this case, it is important that the root system of the plants develop as best as possible. Plants are transplanted into open ground after stable warm weather is established outside.

Barrel preparation

Of course, it is impossible to grow a large tomato tree on ordinary soil. Therefore, a barrel or any other sufficiently voluminous container is filled with a special mixture. First of all, the bottom should be removed from the selected "bed". This is necessary so that excess water can easily come out of the barrel.

Install the barrel should be in the sunniest place of the site. A layer of urgasa is poured into its lowest part. This is the name of a special fertilizer prepared using EM technology. How to do it, we will consider in detail below.

The thickness of the urgasy layer should be about 10 cm. Next, another ten-meter layer is laid, consisting of EM compost, ordinary and soddy soil in a ratio of 1x1x1. At the next stage, one tomato is planted in a barrel.

How to make urgasu

With the use of this type of fertilizer, you can eventually get a fairly large tomato tree. Growing in open ground will not take too much effort.

Urgasy is prepared throughout the year. You can do it right in the city apartment. An old plastic bucket is taken under the urgas and a grate is placed on its bottom so that it is located at a low height. Next, the walls of the container are laid with a plastic bag with holes in the bottom.

All kitchen waste is not put into a garbage can, but into one prepared for urgas. Excess liquid will flow down and it can be used, for example, as a fertilizer for indoor plants(solution with water in a ratio of 1x1000).

After each laying, the mixture should be sprinkled with the Baikal EM1 bacteria preparation, sprinkled with urgasy leaven and pressed down with some kind of load, carefully wrapping it in a bag. The bucket must be tightly closed with a lid.

Sourdough is made from kitchen waste twisted into minced meat and dried on paper. For 1 kilogram of them, 5 tablespoons of Baikal EM1 are added. The resulting mixture is placed in a plastic bag and a load is placed on top. After a week, the mixture is kneaded and dried.

How to make EM compost

A tomato tree in open ground using such an additive to the ground will develop very quickly. So it's a must to use it. Moreover, it will be completely easy to make this fertilizer. EM compost is prepared in much the same way as regular compost. The only thing is that all components should be crushed. The mass should be quite porous. For every 100 kg of mixture, 10 kg of earth or sawdust should be added. Next, everything must be thoroughly mixed and poured in layers with a solution of the EM-1 preparation (100 ml per 10 liters of water) and 100 ml of non-acidic jam without berries. The moisture content of the compost should not fall below 60%. It will be ready in two months.

Planting a tomato

Next, let's see how you can actually get a fairly large and productive tomato tree. Growing in open ground, as already mentioned, is carried out using a rather voluminous container.

For the barrel, choose the strongest and tall plant. They deepen it by about 5 cm. Cover the barrel from above plastic wrap. After the tomato grows by about 10 cm, the lower leaves are cut off and the prepared soil mixture is poured into the barrel to the same height.

In this way, it is necessary to act until the barrel is almost filled to the top.

Tomato tree care

A tomato tree, whose yield reviews, by the way, are very good, like any other plant, requires careful care. First of all, you need to remember that you should not plant a planted tomato. Next to the barrel, you need to install a small trellis to support the lashes.

The moisture content of the soil mixture in the container should not fall below 60%. Top dressing begins to be done from mid-July. To do this, use a mash of EM compost. You can fertilize plants once a week, but 2-3 times is better.

A chatterbox is made by pouring a mixture of EM compost and 1x1 soil into some container a third of the height and filling everything with water to the top. Infuse the solution during the day.

If desired, using the technology described above, you can also grow a small tomato tree at home. Residents of Russia who do not have summer cottages, this technique is used quite often. Of course, in this case, not a barrel is used, but not an overly large bag (for example, from under the flour). It is located on the loggia or balcony. Harvest and in this case can be collected very good.

real tomato tree

Growing a huge "octopus" with a crown diameter of a couple of tens of meters is very difficult and quite expensive. However, you can try this method if you wish. But, of course, only when there is a sufficiently spacious heated greenhouse on the site. The cultivation technology in this case includes the following steps:

  • A container with a height of at least 50 cm and an area of 1.5 meters is being prepared (usually they take an old bath).
  • A special hydroponic solution is mixed.
  • Glass wool cubes are being prepared for seedlings, as well as a large cube for transplanting.
  • A powerful aquarium compressor and lamps are purchased daylight(with a suitable spectrum for plants).

Planting seeds in cubes is carried out at the end of August or even a little later. This is a prerequisite. At autumn planting a tomato tree (a photo of a large tomato "octopus" can be seen below) develops much better. Glass wool is impregnated with a hydroponic solution. After that, seeds are laid in specially cut recesses. You need to moisten the cubes several times a day with the same solution. After two months, the strongest plant is transferred to a large cube prepared in the same way. Tubes leading from the aerator are placed in it, after which it is laid in the bath. The latter must be covered with a foam lid. A hole is made in the top of the lid for the growth of the plant.

The entire cold period of the tomato must be illuminated with lamps (with the formation of a 12-hour daylight hours). Emerging flower shoots during this period should be broken off. Fruiting of the plant should begin no earlier than May. In February, the illumination is stopped. To support the tree, a trellis mesh is arranged above it.

How to prepare a hydroponic solution

Growing a tomato tree large sizes is possible only when using the composition of this particular variety for wetting glass wool. To prepare a hydroponic master mix, take:

  • citrate iron 0.009 gr,
  • ammonium nitrate 0.2 kg,
  • superphosphate 0.55 kg,
  • magnesium 0.3 kg,
  • potassium 0.5 kg,
  • boric acid 0.003 kg,
  • manganese sulfate 0.002 kg.

The mixed ingredients are diluted in 10 liters of water. To prepare a working solution, the mother solution is diluted in a ratio of 1/100 liters. Periodically (once a day - two air is supplied to the roots). Glass wool should not be allowed to dry out. Wet it with the same solution.

This is how a large tomato tree is grown. You can see photos of such plants on the page. Growing this miracle is quite laborious. Hardly too much a large number of summer residents will want to get a huge tree from the Sprut F1 variety. At least due to the lack of professional greenhouses on the sites. However, it is certainly worth trying to grow small trees in a barrel or bag during the warm season. Subject to all the recommendations, the harvest with this method of cultivation will certainly turn out to be very good.

Tomato tree "Octopus F1". At the next international exhibition EXPO in Japan, a presentation of a tomato tree took place. A huge tomato bush, grown from a single seed, was placed in the central location of the government pavilion. During the period of the exhibition, which lasted six months, more than 14 thousand fruits ripened on its widely spread branches.

Biological features

Tomato tree or tomato tree "Octopus F1" is hybrid variety new generation of carpal tomatoes. He attracted close attention of the general public, causing great interest among modern breeders, farmers, gardeners and just ordinary amateur gardeners.

This unusual plant is an indeterminate (unlimited in development) hybrid with a genetic predisposition to the active formation of new shoots. While creating optimal conditions the height of a tomato tree can exceed 5 m, and the diameter of the crown - 10 m! The total weight of the fruits of the annual harvest from such a bush, occupying more than 50 m2, amounted to 1.6 tons.

Tomato tree fully justifies its name - "Octopus F1". Its branches, like the tentacles of an octopus, tightly wrap around a frame arranged for it in a greenhouse. The unique feature of this variety of tomato is its unlimited growth energy, power, super-yield and increased resistance to pathogens. It has a highly developed root system and a well-developed leaf apparatus.

Brushes of tomato hybrid "Octopus F1" are laid with an interval of 2-3 sheets. On each of them, 6-7 fruits weighing up to 170 g are simultaneously formed. Tomatoes have an attractive appearance, regular rounded shape, juicy and fleshy pulp with excellent taste.

Secrets of growing "Octopus F1"

Japanese breeders do not hide the fact that their giant tomato was grown without the use of a soil substrate, i.e. in hydroponics. According to Nozawa Shigeo, its creator, the earth only impedes the development of the plant, hindering the aeration of the roots, the flow of trace elements and mineral salts. He is convinced that only "hyponics" is capable of supporting the life support of such a miracle giant. The use of the capabilities of modern computer technologies allows you to consistently maintain optimal indicators of greenhouse conditions: temperature, humidity, irrigation rate, etc.

The duration of the development process of a tomato tree is on average about one and a half years. With this in mind, its cultivation in climatic conditions central Russia is possible only in greenhouse conditions. They need to ensure stable maintenance of year-round thermal regime and light level.

During the first 7-8 months of the development of a tomato tree, it is necessary to purposefully form its crown, preventing fruit set. After this period, when the crown is already fully formed, finally, a period of active fruit formation and fruiting begins.

Greenhouse cultivation "Octopus F1"

As practice has shown, it is possible to grow the Sprut F1 hybrid tomato not only in professional, but also in amateur greenhouses. When grown in a simple greenhouse during the summer season, even an inexperienced gardener has a chance to get a fairly tall plant that will produce more than 10 kg of fruit by autumn. And to the maximum favorable conditions with intensive mineral nutrition much more significant results can be achieved: a powerfully developed tree with a massive harvest.

When growing a tomato tree in a professionally equipped greenhouse, it is recommended to abandon the use of soil mixtures and soils, because. they are potential breeding grounds for diseases and pests. Even taking into account the increased disease resistance of the Sprut F1 hybrid, it is desirable to exclude adverse factors that can cause damage to the plant.

For growing the indeterminate tomato "Octopus F1", the hydroponic method is considered optimal, i.e. soilless method of cultivation in an artificial, supernutrient environment. This method provides good air permeability and oxygen saturation of the root system, which, in turn, eliminates the possibility of excessive moisture ingress and drying of the root processes.

Thanks to the use of an artificial substrate, for example, glass wool cubes, it is possible to dose the tree with moisture and nutritional components. However, it is worth giving increased attention fertilizing with mineral salts.

Experience in growing "Octopus F1" in the open field

Practical experiments of domestic gardeners have confirmed that the cultivation of the Sprut F1 hybrid tomato is also possible in the open ground of the middle lane. True, the size of the plant and its yield are significantly reduced.

Taking into account the need to regularly provide the plant with concentrated organomineral supplements, it is not advisable to plant a tomato tree in an unlimited soil volume. This will not even partially realize the genetic potential of the Sprut F1.

Decent results were noted in the cultivation of the Sprut F1 tomato hybrid using EM cultivation methods. They consist in the application of modern biotechnological methods of using useful properties various kinds microorganisms that are an integral part of the living soil environment (Effective Microorganisms). Based on them, a number of preparations were developed: EM-A, EM-1, EM-X Gold, EM Ceramics of Japanese production, as well as their Russian analogues"Siyanie-1, -2, -3", "EM-ceramics", "Baikal EM-1", "Bokashi", etc.

The experimenters who resorted to this method used large bottomless barrels to partially limit the volume of the soil, which layer-by-layer filled two-thirds with a mixture of EM compost and fertile garden soil. Then they planted seedlings of hybrid tomato "Octopus F1", which were grown similarly to seedlings of local tomato varieties.

As the seedlings of "Octopus F1" developed, the soil mixture of the same consistency was poured into the barrels. Before the onset of June, pinching was regularly carried out on the bushes, forming the crown of the future tree and removing the buds. As a result, a powerfully developed root system was formed in the plant, densely filling the surface layers of the soil in the barrel. Such plants showed increased resistance to diseases, pests, temperature fluctuations and other adverse factors.

With the onset of the summer season, the main task was to form maximum number brushes and fruit ovaries. On experimental plants, their number reached 15 pieces on each brush. The main and lateral branches of the tomato at this point began to hang down under the weight of the fruit, in contact with the ground. Because of this, in the middle of summer, the tomato tree had to be strengthened on supports dug in next to the barrel.

Such big plant needed more watering and fertilizing. On average, the humidity level inside the barrel was maintained at 60%. Excess irrigation water freely left the barrel due to the absence of its bottom.

By the middle of the summer season, the first fruits ripened on the tomato trees. For the possibility of further maturation of the crop, the plants began to need intensive feeding. From that point on, they were watered with EM compost mash three times a week.

Thanks to increased care with the use of EM cultivation methods, the tomato harvest was extended until the end of September. Interestingly, by quality characteristics the fruits from the upper brushes were in no way inferior to the fruits collected from the lower brushes.

The best results in the difficult task of growing a tomato tree are obtained if EM fertilizers are used. Effective microorganisms help release nutrients, enrich the soil, and the compost and fertilizer prepared with them will ensure unprecedented growth of your vegetables, so that the benefits of them will be not only for the tomato tree. If you have never used EM fertilizers before, this is good opportunity to begin.

You can do without EM fertilizers, replacing them with organomineral fertilizers for vegetables with trace elements. But then expectations about the size of the tomato tree should be tempered. He will have to bear fruit for a long time, so nutrition should be enough.

What you need for a tomato tree

How to grow a tomato tree

1 - Seedling. It should be planted as early as possible (preferably by), you can start as early as mid-January. The soil should be taken with a high content of biohumus. Maintain the temperature in the region of 20-25 ° C, the same as adult plants like. Since our winters are dark, and in spring the days are still short, seedlings need to be illuminated with special lamps. Everything else is as usual: picking, so that the roots develop, watering.

2 - Site preparation. We have already talked about capacity. You need to install it on the ground in a greenhouse or in the open field, weather permitting, in the sunniest place. Also, there should be enough space around, because the “crown” of the tomato tree spreads in all directions up to 2 meters. Now we fill the container. The bottom layer will be urgasa (purchased or our own; how to cook it, we will tell below) 10-15 cm thick. The next layer is soddy soil mixed in equal proportions with EM compost. This layer should reach up to 1/3 of the height of the barrel. Sprinkle lightly with earth from the beds on top, and you can plant.

3 - Landing in the ground. In late April - early May, you need to choose the most powerful and pretty seedling, plant it in a container. Everything is the same as with ordinary tomatoes. In a greenhouse, everything is easy and understandable, especially in a heated one, but how to grow a tomato tree without a greenhouse, protect it from frost and night cold? Cover with foil to keep warm. At first, this will be easy, because the top of the seedling does not reach the edge of the container, you can not be afraid to damage it. Then you need arcs. It is better to press the edges of the film with something heavy, and sprinkle with earth from one edge.

4 - Pasynkovanie. A week after disembarkation should be cut off lower leaves, leaving 1-2 top rows. Wait until the wounds of the plant dry up (it will take 1-2 hours), cover the shoot to the leaves with a layer of soil mixture: equal parts of urgasy, turf and ordinary earth. Do not feel sorry for the urgasy! It will nourish your future tomato tree until the summer and allow the root system to develop and strengthen. Actually, the whole procedure is aimed at that: to form powerful roots. Stepping will need to be repeated in about a week, the steps are the same. And stop - when the top of the plant appears above the edge of the container. This is all true for tomato varieties, except for "Octopus F1", which is not required to stepchild.

5 - Watering and top dressing. By July, the tomato tree will use up the nutrients, and you will need to feed 1-2 times a week. How to prepare it from the preparation "Baikal EM1", see below. An aqueous solution of herbal infusion is also suitable. You need to water the tomato tree abundantly, without sparing, excess water will still leave the container. In hot weather, you need to water daily, preferably in the morning.

6 - Brush care. There should be a lot of ovaries, if everything went well. Soon they will begin to hang down from the container. Someone leaves them like that, and collects fruits from hanging brushes, especially if the plant does not reach the size of the "tree". But it is better to make a net or supports, and tie the branches to them so that the tomato tree has more space and air, and looks like a real crown that can grow up to 2 meters in height. You can just dig a pole and tie branches to it, you can make a frame of two poles on the sides of the container, pull a wire or a strong fishing line, rope between them, you get a very convenient net. The fruits should ripen by mid-July, this is not the most early harvest, but a tomato tree can bear fruit until mid-October, when ordinary bushes have already worked their way out. That's all the salt.

How to make urgasu, EM compost and top dressing

Urgas. These are, roughly speaking, fermented with the help of microorganisms organic waste. A very valuable and nutritious thing, which is better to do it yourself, because it does not last long. For the summer season, urgas is harvested in winter. To do this, you need a plastic bucket, an opaque dark plastic bag (garbage), in which you need to make several small holes for drainage. Put a grate at the bottom of the bucket so that the bag lies on it, does not touch the liquid, which should not stagnate in it, otherwise the fermentation processes will be disrupted. The liquid needs to be drained periodically, it is useful in itself, for example, to eliminate bad smell in pipes. So, you need to put crushed food organic waste into the bag as it arrives, spray each layer with a solution of the EM preparation (diluted in water 1 to 100), tightly tie the bag, expelling the air. Place a weight on top of the bag. Drain the fluid every few days. This is done at room temperature, and when the bag is full, you can take it to the balcony and store it there, microorganisms in the cold will slow down life processes, and in the spring, on the site, they will come to life again. If you do everything right, the smell will be, but not unpleasant.

EM compost. It is very similar to urgas, because it is also fermented organic waste, but with the addition of earth and sawdust. And it is prepared in almost the same way: to the bottom of the dark plastic bag we fall asleep sawdust, then - a daily portion of crushed waste, we fall asleep with earth, sprinkle with an EM preparation. We tightly tie the bag, releasing air. The sawdust will take away excess moisture into itself, so there is no need to specifically drain the liquid. We repeat the procedure as waste appears. You can also store compost on the balcony, in the garage, on the site.

EM supplement. A soil mixture of soddy soil and EM compost in equal parts put in a suitable container, fill with non-chlorinated water (1 part of the soil mixture and 2 parts of water), let it brew for a day. Other top dressing: weekly infusion of chopped green plants, such as weeds, mix well with EM compost, EM preparation solution, mullein and ash.

Pros and cons of tomato tree

A tomato tree is grown for a large and long, until mid-autumn, harvest and economy of effort (one bush instead of several). If you succeed, your expectations will be justified: a tomato tree bears fruit for a very long time compared to ordinary tomato bushes, and besides, grown using EM technology, it is more resistant to cold and disease. Some of the minuses follow from the pros: “tree "Takes up a lot of space, with it a little more fuss than with ordinary beds. A greenhouse is very desirable, in Siberia, in the Urals and in the North-West, a tomato tree in the open field simply does not have time to bear fruit well, the summer is already over, there is not enough heat and light for the fruits to continue to ripen. But not everyone has a greenhouse, especially a heated one. In addition, the fruits begin to ripen quite late. That is why many prefer to breed small ones, and not in the ground. Solution: plant a tomato together with ordinary tomatoes, and then you will have fresh vegetables all summer. Good luck with your agricultural experiments!

Everyone knows that a tomato grows on a bush, and not everyone believes that there is also a tomato tree - cyphomandra or tamarillo. Even though it's exotic for European countries a plant, a person who knows how to grow nightshade crops (tomato, pepper,) can easily cope with this task.

Growing a tomato tree at home

Despite the fact that the cyphomandra is a tree, it should be planted in a wide, shallow tub with a pallet, since the plant has a superficial root system. Cultivation should be carried out on a well-lit and insulated balcony or on a southern windowsill.

In order to get a fruit-bearing tomato tree, you should read the recommendations on how to grow it at home:

  1. The soil. Cyphomandra requires light fertile land. The top layer must be mulched with moss or expanded clay.
  2. Landing. You can plant seeds throughout the year, but it is better to do this in the spring. First planting material should be kept for 12 hours in the refrigerator, and only then buried 1.5 cm into the ground. Pour over and cover with foil. After the seedlings sprout, they should be planted in separate pots.
  3. Watering and feeding. Watering should be as it dries (approximately 2 times a week), done only through the pan. Top dressing is carried out 1 time in 2 weeks complex fertilizers. In winter, watering should be reduced (1 time per week), and top dressing should be stopped altogether.
  4. Transfer. Annually, the plant should be transshipped into a pot slightly larger in diameter than it was.
  5. Reproduction. It is carried out both by seeds and cuttings with 2-3 internodes. In the second case, the cyphomandra begins to bear fruit in the first year.

Varieties of tomato tree

The varieties of this tree differ from each other mainly appearance and the taste of its fruits. The following are especially popular among gardeners.
