Stearine can be easily obtained from laundry soap. Grate the soap on a coarse grater or slice it with a knife. Place the shavings in a metal container, fill with water until the liquid covers them and send to melt in a water bath. When the soap has dissolved, remove it from the heat and add the vinegar. A thick mass will float to the surface, which needs to be collected with a spoon after cooling. This mass is stearin; it must be rinsed several times under water and wrapped in a clean cloth to remove excess moisture.

Wick. For the wick you will need a thick cotton thread, for example, braided or twisted floss. Synthetic materials They are not suitable for candles because they burn quickly and smell unpleasant. It's easier to get a wick from regular candles.

Form. You can use different containers as a mold for making candles: coffee jars, durable packaging, sand molds and plastic balls. If you decide to make a narrowed or round candle, the container you will use for this, for example, a plastic ball, should be cut lengthwise and a hole with a diameter of at least 1 cm should be made at the top so that the composition can be freely poured into it.

Dyes. You can use dry food coloring, wax crayons, or natural ingredients, such as cocoa. But alcohol or alcohol paints water based not suitable for making candles.

Melting utensils. A small saucepan or bowl that can be conveniently placed in a steam bath will do.

You can scent the candles with your favorite essential oils, vanilla or cinnamon.

Work progress

  1. Grind the selected raw material and place it in a water bath. If you are using household candles, do not forget to remove the wick. Remaining candles must be cleaned of black soot. While stirring, wait until the mass melts. Dip the wick into it several times until it is saturated and set it aside.
  2. Add flavoring and coloring to the mixture. If you use wax crayons, you need to grind them using a fine grater. By using two or more colors you can achieve a marbled look. And by dividing the mass into several parts and painting them in different colors, you can make a multi-colored candle.
  3. Grease the mold chosen for the candle with vegetable oil or dishwashing detergent. Attach the tip of the wick to a stick, toothpick or pencil and place it on the mold so that the free end of the wick passes through its middle and reaches the bottom. For reliability, you can attach a weight, such as a nut, to the free part of the wick.
  4. Fill the mold with the melted mass, wait until it hardens completely, then remove the candle by pulling the wick. If the candle is difficult to remove, immerse the mold in hot water.
  5. You can decorate candles in different ways, for example, place dried flowers, blades of grass and seeds around the edges of the mold and then pour in the melted mass. For making coffee candle you need to pour a layer of coffee beans on the bottom of the mold, fill them with liquid material for the candle and put the beans on top again. For recent years The production of candles from mass production slowly migrated to the home workshops of needlewomen, turning into a creative activity.

Candles, which just a century ago were not only the main source of light, but also a kind of indicator of a family’s well-being, used in wealthy homes instead of a smoky torch, have long lost their original meaning. Today it is important to make candles with your own hands at home in order to use them in a completely different capacity - as an element exquisite decor and an invariable attribute of creating a romantic mood.

Making decorative candles as a hobby

Thanks to the simple technology of creating and large selection materials for work and decoration, now every craftswoman can open a miniature “candle factory” at home, which will not only bring pleasure from creativity, but can also become additional source making a profit.

The advantage of this type of hobby is that the activity is not difficult, not boring, and you can get a beautiful result quite quickly. For these reasons, making candles at home will appeal to and be within the power of needlewomen of all ages - both seasoned and not yet very experienced.

What you need for creativity

The best part is that to get started you need a minimum set of materials:

  • candle gel, wax or paraffin;
  • wick or cotton threads without synthetic impurities for its manufacture;
  • form for pouring candles;
  • elements for decoration.

Wax or paraffin can be used from ordinary household candles, and it will not be difficult to remove the finished wick from them. Candle gel is also easy to make with your own hands. Instead of an expensive mold, you can take any suitable fireproof container - a beautiful cup, jar, tin box. In short, starting a new hobby won’t cost much. We can say that this is one of the.

Based on the main material used to make candles, there are two basic technologies - wax and gel, which are similar in many ways, but still have their own nuances in operation.

Secrets of making candles from wax or paraffin

In the process of creating a wax product, the most critical moment is the melting of the material. This will require good dexterity and speed of action, since melted wax or paraffin cools quickly, moreover, it is very hot and can easily burn.

Also, before making a candle with your own hands, it is important to choose the right thickness of the wick: if you make it too thick, the candle will melt and smoke excessively, and a very thin one will constantly go out. Big role The density of twisting of the wick also plays a role - for wax and paraffin candles, the threads should be twisted slightly loosely so that the flame does not go out.

There is no universal advice here - optimal thickness and the twist density of the threads for the wick will have to be determined only by personal experience, by trial and experimentation. Each master develops his own formula and secret over time. successful work.

DIY gel candles

To make beautiful transparent candles that do not emit odor or smoke, you can use ready-made gel wax, or you can prepare consumables on one's own. In the latter case, you need to purchase ingredients such as glycerin, tannin, gelatin, distilled water and mix them, boil over low heat until the liquid has completely evaporated.

This technology is somewhat more complicated than wax technology, but the result is worth the effort - the products are very elegant and unique. During cooking, the mixture may become cloudy, but this is a temporary phenomenon that goes away immediately after the gel cools.

Gel opens up many different possibilities for decoration. For example, shells, pebbles, starfish, dried citrus fruits or flowers look very beautiful when filled with transparent wax. Women seeking this method can make candles with their own hands at home, since no harmful substances are released during work.

Making aroma candles at home

It’s worth mentioning separately about aroma candles - they are also easy to make at home. The advantage of home-made scented candles is that you can have one hundred percent confidence in the environmental friendliness and harmlessness of the fragrant components.

Handmade is gaining more and more popularity. Extravagant jewelry, paintings, toys, decorative elements, gifts - this is just a small part of what passionate craftsmen and amateurs create with their own hands. Today we will talk about how to make a candle at home.

This process does not require special skills or equipment. After reading our recommendations and detailed master classes, even beginners can begin this exciting process.

Creating a candle: where to start

Making your own candles is much easier than you might think. And the main advantage of such an activity is necessary materials easily accessible. If you look hard enough, you can even find them in your home.

Materials for a homemade candle

Wax, stearin or paraffin are best suited for the job. Moreover, it is better for beginners to start getting acquainted with the latter; it is the least demanding to use. You can buy paraffin at the store or use leftover old white candles.

Wick

It is best to use natural threads as a wick, ideally thick cotton ones. Do not try to use synthetics: such a wick will quickly burn and leave behind bad smell. To check if the thread is natural, simply set fire to its tip. If it melts, forming a hard ball at the end, you have synthetics.

If you have an unusual candle in mind and are thinking about how to make an original wick for it, then use colored floss threads. This is an excellent and natural material.

Remember important rule: the thicker the candle, the thicker the wick should be.

It's easy to make it yourself. To do this, prepare a solution: in a glass of water, dissolve 1 tablespoon of salt and 2 tablespoons boric acid. Soak cotton thread or floss in it for 12 hours. Then dry them and twist them into a rope or braid them.

If this process seems tedious to you, carefully remove the wick from the finished household candle and use it.

Candle mold

First of all, decide on the configuration of the desired candle, and then try to find a hollow object of the same shape. You may find it useful:
  • cardboard bags for milk and juices;
  • plastic cups for yoghurts and desserts;
  • egg shells;
  • silicone baking molds;
  • glass goblets, wine glasses, glasses and glasses;
  • baby beads;
  • shaped ice cream molds;
  • tin and glass coffee jars;
  • empty tin cans.
The only requirement is that the mold material must withstand heating up to 100°C.

Another interesting option- pour candles into beautiful transparent glasses. You won’t be able to get them, but they will look very stylish and unusual.

Sometimes scented candles made in tangerine or orange peel. The fruit is first cut in half and the pulp is carefully removed. You can also use large shells or coconut shells.

Dyes

A white candle is elegant but boring. Naturally, the question arises of how to color paraffin in order to obtain bright interior decorations.

For lovers of candle making, the best and cheapest option is to take wax crayons for children's creativity. Want to get a special candle? Look for pearlescent crayons - your creation will be unique.

Do not try to use water-soluble gouache or watercolor - you will fail. The dye will inevitably settle to the bottom or fall out in flakes. Finished product will look very unpresentable.

Paraffin melting utensils

In order to melt the paraffin, you will need a small saucepan for a steam bath and an iron bowl. Experienced craftsmen It is recommended to heat paraffin in a steam bath, considering other methods, including the microwave, to be fire hazardous.

To begin with, we recommend that you also use this method, proven over the years: place a bowl of paraffin in a container of boiling water. If you plan to have a colored candle, add the chalk immediately and stir the melted mass several times to obtain a uniform color.

Flavors and decor

Any available materials are suitable for decorating candles. First, decide on the topic of your work. Pebbles and shells will effectively complement candles in nautical style. For a New Year's theme, use beads, small cones, small decorative balls, ribbons and bows. Decorate Valentine's Day candles with hearts, sparkles, bows, dried flowers, coffee beans, etc.

It is best to scent homemade candles with essential oils, which can be purchased at your nearest pharmacy. Another option is to find vanilla cinnamon in your kitchen. It is worth adding flavors to melted paraffin at the very end, after coloring.

Crush the paraffin into small pieces with a knife to speed up the melting process. If you took store-bought candles, carefully crush them blunt side of the knife so as not to damage the wick.

Place paraffin in glass jar and put it in a saucepan with warm water. Heat the water over low heat until the paraffin is completely melted in the jar - it should become transparent.

At this time, prepare the mold for pouring. To a larger plastic cup, place the smaller one after filling it with water. There should be a fairly wide space between the walls of the cups. Pour coffee beans up to half the height between the walls.

Pour the melted paraffin into the mold to the level of the grains, wait about 10 minutes. Then pour the paraffin to the edge of the mold and let it harden completely. This will take about an hour.

Carefully pour the water out of the inner glass and remove it from the paraffin ring. Lower the wick into the workpiece so that it reaches the bottom of the glass. Tie its upper end to the holder and place it on top of the glass, centering the wick.

Pour melted paraffin into the middle of the candle. Place a few grains on top for decoration. Now you will have to wait 4-6 hours until the candle hardens completely.

Carefully remove the frozen candle from the glass. At the same time, it can be cut with scissors to facilitate manipulation.

Place a dry flower on the candle to be decorated and gently stroke its petals external side of the spoon so that they melt to the paraffin and do not stick out. Thick stems may need to be ironed several times while heating the spoon.

Carefully trim off any excess stems that extend beyond the candle with scissors.

Glue the remaining elements in the same way, choosing the desired location for them. Make sure that the edges of the leaves and petals do not stick out.

We create masterpieces on our own

Recipes for making candles that are easy to implement without leaving home:

Recipe No. 1: “Wax”

Wax candles have a very simple structure:

They are created from the following materials:

Name Purpose Image
Wax or paraffin Creation of the body of the manufactured product itself. To obtain such materials, you can use ordinary household candles.
Cotton thread or floss Creating a wick that will actually emit heat and light, burning slowly
Pot Organizing a water bath for melting wax or paraffin
A clean metal container, such as a ladle Wax or paraffin content when melted in a water bath
Molds made of tin, glass or plastic Shaping hardening wax or paraffin
Wooden stick or regular pencil Wick attachment

For the first time, I recommend taking someone as an assistant, since the melted wax will begin to set within fifteen minutes after removing it from the burner. Due to inexperience, you may not have time to complete all the necessary actions alone.

Now let's look at the step-by-step steps tasks:

Step #1:
  • We tie one edge of a cotton thread or floss to the middle of a stick or pencil;
  • We place the stick or pencil itself on top of the mold, placing it on its edges so that the second edge of the wick goes down to the bottom of the container;
  • We do this with each of the prepared forms.

Step #2:
  • To melt wax or paraffin, start with small pieces. This will significantly speed up the process;
  • Then we take about half a pan of water and put it on low heat;
  • Pour the prepared material into the ladle, then immerse the container in the heating water;
  • Stir the melting contents until they completely transform into a liquid, homogeneous state without lumps

Step #3:
  • Pour a small amount of melted wax or paraffin into the mold just enough so that the lower edge of the wick is immersed in it;
  • If necessary, adjust the thread or floss so that the fixation occurs efficiently;
  • We wait about a minute for the material to set.

Step #4:
  • Carefully pour in the remaining melted paraffin or wax;
  • Leave the mold until completely set.

Step #5:
  • After about 24 hours, we check how well the material used to create the candle body has frozen;
  • Then we measure the length of the wick by eye so that it is convenient to light it;
  • Cut off the excess;
  • After another day, the product can be used for its intended purpose.

It is better to use forms with smooth edges or disposable ones that can simply be destroyed. Then you won't have to leave ready-made candles in them.

Recipe No. 2: “Colored”

A DIY colored candle at home is created almost exactly the same as a regular wax candle, with the exception of one additional ingredient: wax pencils .

They have a very large assortment of possible colors, which opens up enormous possibilities for transforming the appearance of handmade candles:

  1. This way you can make a simple one-color product by adding a piece of the pencil you like to the paraffin or wax melted in a water bath. It will also dissolve, turning the boring yellowness into a more cheerful and interesting shade;

  1. If you throw several multi-colored pieces into the melting mass at once, you will get a rainbow candle;
  2. Striped specimens are more popular. When making them, each portion of wax with a new color is poured after the previous one has completely hardened. The process, of course, is delayed, but the result looks amazing.

If, after pouring each new layer, the mold is not placed directly on the table, but installed at an angle, then you can get more complex patterns than the “zebra”.

Recipe No. 3: “Flavored”

You don't have to limit yourself to adding just colored wax pencils. At home, you can also add a few drops to the prepared solution before pouring it. essential oil. In this case, your candle will begin to smell even more fragrant and even have a positive effect on the body.

Here are examples of the effects of some essences:

  1. Lavender and bergamot help you relax as much as possible, which is indispensable after a hard day at work;

  1. Lemon and rosemary help lift good mood and removing negative thoughts;

  1. Geranium, rose and lavender relieve stress;

Recipe No. 4: “Transparent gels”

Here, in order to make a candle at home, a special candle gel is used instead of wax or paraffin.

This gives a very important visual effect– transparency, due to which adjustments are also made to the manufacturing process itself:

  1. If a mold is used with concave edges, it must be transparent. Otherwise, the whole meaning of the helium candle will be lost;

  1. Before directly pouring the melted gel, the selected form should be heated to prevent the formation of bubbles in the structure of the product being manufactured;
  2. In the process of forming the body of the candle, they are immersed in its material decorative elements, which, due to the transparency of the helium composition, freeze inside. Moreover, anything that your imagination tells you is suitable for decoration. It looks amazing.

Recipe No. 5: “Fruit”

Human ingenuity does not stop at the above, which I want to prove to you by demonstrating the recipe for candles using fragments of natural fruits. To work you will need the following materials:

Having collected everything you need, let's get started tasks:

Step #1:
  • Carefully cut the lemon using a sharp knife;
  • We take out all the inner pulp from it;
  • We carry out a similar operation with the second fruit

Step #2:
  • We heat the wax or paraffin in a water bath, as was described in the instructions for making wax candles;
  • Add dried lavender flowers, a few drops of essential oil and food coloring to the resulting substance;
  • Mix everything thoroughly

Step #3:
  • In the center of each of the resulting lemon halves we fix a wick;
  • Then fill them with the prepared mixture

Step #4:
  • Place the filled fruit bowls in a cool place;
  • We are waiting for them to completely harden.

Just do not put lemon molds in the refrigerator under any circumstances, as the wax filling them may harden unevenly.

Recipe No. 6: “Coffee”

In this case, the set of materials and the process itself are similar to the same production of classical wax candle. But coffee beans are also added to give the product a special ambiance.

And this can be done in four ways:

  1. You just need to add coffee beans to melted wax or paraffin, and you will already get an original design on the finished product;

  1. You can also line a finished candle with grains by gluing them with glue or pressing them to a material that has not yet completely hardened;

  1. The simplest option is to remove the already frozen sample from the mold, place it in a large transparent container and fill the gap between the walls with coffee beans;

  1. If you want to rely on the aroma, and not on appearance, then add ground coffee to the melted wax or paraffin. And then, as the candle burns, a pleasant coffee smell will emanate throughout the room.

Recipe No. 7: “With photographs”

This is not exactly a recipe for making a candle, since the entire initial process completely repeats the creation of a wax specimen. But then, when it has completely hardened, you can start applying photographs to its walls. For this will be needed:

Image Name

Hardened paraffin or wax candle

Tracing paper

Printer paper sheet

Wax paper

Scotch

Scissors

Printer

Hairdryer

Procedure looks like this:

Step #1:
  • We select a suitable photo;
  • We fix the tracing paper on a sheet of paper using tape

Step #2:
  • We feed the combined sheets into the printer so that the copied image is printed on tracing paper;
  • Print the photo;
  • Separate the tracing paper and cut out the main image from it, leaving a thin white frame

Step #3:
  • Wrap the printed photo around the candle;
  • Cover it with wax paper on top;
  • Warm up with a hairdryer until the emerging image becomes clear

Step #4:
  • Carefully remove the wax paper;
  • We receive the original product
