How to fix a leak from a pipe. How to eliminate a leak at a pipe junction. Tools for "treating" old pipes

Leak in hot pipe or in the radiator - this is a nuisance, and a leak that starts in a pressure circuit is an even bigger problem. If a heating pipe is leaking, the problem must be repaired urgently.

Methods for sealing a leak depend on where it occurs:

  1. A seamless or welded heating pipe is leaking;
  2. A leak has appeared at the interface between pipe and battery, pipe and fitting, fitting and fitting;
  3. In the intersection space of the radiator;
  4. In an open area of the battery that is accessible for repair.

Each of these accidents can be eliminated using improvised means and in different ways, but only in one case - if the leak in the heating radiator or in the pipe is small, and water or coolant flows in a thin stream or drips. More serious leaks can be eliminated using more radical methods, which we will talk about. Anyone who has ever repaired a leak in their heating system knows how much trouble they saved themselves and their family from.

In both large and small leaks, you must immediately turn off the shut-off valve for supplying working fluid to the system. The problem is solved by using the following options:

  1. If the radiator is leaking, then you need to close the shut-off valves at the inlet and outlet of the device. If the radiator has a bypass, then the entire system will continue to operate without stopping; if there is no bypass, then it is better to turn off the boiler to avoid unexpected overheating of the heating system;
  2. If shut-off valves no, or it is installed, but not where it is needed, then the heating must be stopped so that the pipes do not remain under pressure, and the leak must be repaired.

Steel pipes with hot water They rust quickly, even if they are painted, and this causes thinning of the pipe walls. In the thinnest places, a leak may appear over time and, if it is not eliminated in time, the drops will imperceptibly turn into a trickle.

If a colored spot appears on the pipe, the paint begins to swell, traces of rusty water drips or rust on the pipe are visible, water is dripping imperceptibly, you should not wait in the hope that it will stop on its own. It’s better if you find a suspicious place in the summer, with the heating turned off - there will be less problems with shutdown and maintenance of room temperature during repairs.

How to fix a leak in a pressurized water pipe

  1. If a pipe is leaking when the coolant pressure is low, then an ordinary iron pipe clamp to eliminate the leak is a sure and quick solution to eliminating a leak in the heating system. The factory clamp is a round metal structure with a wall thickness of 1-1.5 mm, rubberized on the inside and equipped with a bolt and nut for tightening (or a pair - depending on the width of the clamp);
  2. People's advice on how to seal a leak if there is no steel clamp: wrap the accident site with rubber from a bicycle tube, a pharmaceutical bandage, or any suitable piece of rubber, for example, a rubber glove. You can secure such a homemade clamp with wire, or wrap it with any cord;
  3. In the absence of a factory clamp and rubber, you can make a homemade clamp from tin, even from a tin can lid;
  4. Even a piece of elastic polymer (for example, vulcan rubber), tightly wrapped with wire, turn to turn, can temporarily save the situation.

Other methods of eliminating an accident if a heating pipe is leaking will not work - only dry surfaces can be sealed with cold welding, although the hardened composite can then work even in water. It will not work to seal a hole or crack with sealing compounds for the same reason - the surface to be repaired must be dry, and preferably clean. Therefore, sealant for heating pipes, epoxy resin, dichloroethane and other fast-hardening composites are used only in disconnected, dry sections of the heating route. This also applies to the repair of the water supply line in the hot water supply or hot water supply pipe.

How to fix a leak in your home heating system

If the leak is strong and a simple clamp cannot be used to close it, the heating circuit with liquid will have to be turned off. It doesn’t matter where the leak is found - on a heating or water supply pipe - eliminating the leak will only be possible by turning off the water supply. A disconnected circuit gives scope for repairs: you can at the same time check the entire route and repair (replace) all suspicious areas.

Let's start with the simplest ways to fix a leak in a heating pipe:

Seal the gap or hole with a fabric (fiberglass) patch generously coated with epoxy glue. The patches (there should be 2-3 of them) are cut twice as wide as the diameter of the pipe; the length should allow the pipe to be wrapped 5-7 times. The metal around the violation is cleaned sandpaper, a file or a grinder, the area is well dried, and epoxy resin is applied to it. The fabric can be soaked with glue in advance, or you can coat it as you wind it onto the pipe - whichever is more convenient on the spot. The last fabric layer is not saturated with glue, and the end of the fabric is secured with cord or wire. Epoxy dries on a pipe in different ways: at a temperature of 20 0 C-25 0 C, a few hours are enough; at a temperature below 18 0 C, even a day is not enough.

If you repaired a pipe central heating, then the system operates under higher pressure than individual heating, and during the initial supply of water to the circuit after repair, a noticeable water hammer may occur, which can simply rip off the patch. Therefore, the supply valve should be opened slowly, tracking the area with the patch visually.

You can increase the strength of the patch by adding bronze or aluminum powder to the epoxy glue. If you were unable to buy powder, you can make it at home by grinding off the surface of any non-ferrous metal part with a small file or needle file. By adding such powder, you can make not 5-7 turns of fabric, but 2-3, and repairing such an area will become easier and faster.

Factory materials

From ready-made solutions, adhesives and liquids, you can use a heat-resistant, waterproof sealant to seal the leak. Similar adhesive compositions are produced specifically for the repair of heating systems. When purchasing, make sure that the word “neutral” is on the label - this means that your glue will not corrode non-ferrous metal and adjacent materials.

Cold welding is also good for eliminating leaks:

  1. A liquid epoxy substance that is convenient for impregnating fabric patches that are placed over a hole. water pipe. Some compounds can also work on a wet surface;
  2. Semi-solid plastic compositions. This cold welding looks like a small piece of plasticine consisting of two different component strips. Knead the plasticine in your hands until the substance becomes plastic (your palms should be wet - moisten them in water), cover the hole in the pipe with a small piece, and spread it over the cleaned surface. It takes 10-15 minutes to harden, after which the patch becomes so hard that it is difficult to take even with a file.

Both liquid and solid cold welding contain toxins, so it is recommended to use rubber gloves when working with it.

Sealing connections on pipes and between radiator sections

If connections at the junction of pipes or fittings are leaking, then, depending on the difference in diameters, you can immediately seal the pipeline with a metal clamp or first wrap rubber in place with a smaller diameter. The rubber band is easily wound even under pressure, stopping severe leakage.

BF-2 glue works well for sealing the threaded connection in the place where tow or FUM tape is wound. The tow is first soaked in alcohol, then coated with glue. The glue dissolved in alcohol impregnates the winding, and after drying it forms a dense waterproof layer.

What else can the winding be impregnated with and what can be used to wrap the pipe so that it does not leak: in most cases, ordinary oil-based (not nitro) paint is used. To do this, wrap the tow around the thread, apply the paint with a brush, and after tightening the thread, paint this area 2-3 more times. You can turn on the heating or water supply only after 2-3 days.

If you can’t fix the leak with your own hands, you need to turn off the heating or water supply and redo the threaded connection: completely remove the old winding, clean the threads and degrease them. New tow or FUM tape must be wrapped with preliminary impregnation with sealant or paint.

  1. In case of leakage metal-plastic fitting flow water supply network it is easier to eliminate: you can stop the leak by simply tightening the thread. In 90% of cases this helps;
  2. To stop the leak, the copper circuit only needs to be soldered;
  3. Propylene pipes on the heating circuit are repaired by replacing the cracked section with a new piece of pipe - this requires a special welding machine for welding PP products - there are no other ways to weld propylene.

If you don’t know what to do if there is a leak between the battery sections, then the most common repair is replacing the gasket between the radiator elements, or replacing the nipple. To do this, the system is turned off and the failed part is replaced with a new one. There are no other options other than temporary repairs - applying a patch using the method described above. This is a rather complicated process, since aluminum radiators have a very small distance from section to section.

To fix a leak on an aluminum surface between sections, you need to somehow manage to clean it hard to reach places. To do this, you can use a cable - you need to wrap it around the leak and pull the ends one by one until all the paint is erased. A clean aluminum surface is sealed with epoxy mixed with aluminum powder, or using cold welding.

Few people know, but you can cover up a heating pipe with regular table salt! A small hole in a water supply line or heating pipe will immediately stop flowing if you rub it with a pinch of salt. If the hole is rather large, then salt is used together with a regular bandage - rewinding the leak area, the bandage is sprinkled with salt.

If aluminum radiator drips, then repair is a temporary measure for one season. To get through next winter, the radiator needs to be changed - it will definitely leak in another place.

How to fix a leak on a radiator

Not between sections, not on the threads, but simply on the body of the radiator - such cases occur mainly with cast iron or steel devices due to cavities that occur in the casting. Temporary repairs can be carried out as follows:

  1. The simplest and quick way stop the leak; if the hole is small, hammer a wooden plug (plug) into it. Level it with the surface of the product, cover it with sealant or cold weld;
  2. In addition to wood, a self-tapping screw or press washer will work well. The hardware also needs to be lubricated with sealant before screwing it into the hole.

Leaking hidden pipes

It is clear that this is the biggest nuisance that can be imagined in a newly renovated apartment. There are two options for how to seal to prevent pipes from leaking in the wall or under the floor:

Mustard can only be used for water, and factory solutions can be used for both water and antifreeze.

Conclusion

There are a lot of ways to seal large and small holes and cracks in pipes and heating radiators - both folk and scientific. But they have one drawback in common - this is a temporary and forced measure. Pipe, fitting or radiator when finished heating season definitely needs to be replaced.

Leaks in heating and water supply systems can occur at the most inopportune moment.

This article will help you quickly eliminate them and continue operating the systems until they are overhauled.

Eliminating leaks in metal pipes of water supply and heating systems

There are many reasons for leaks and direct leaks from metal water supply pipes (hot and cold).

The most common cause of this is pipe corrosion, long time in operation, sudden changes in pressure under which water is supplied by supplying organizations, etc.

The appearance of a leak indicates that it is advisable to change the pipe, because After the first leak, the next one will appear very soon.

Currently, there are two approaches to solving this issue. The first is consumer. By law, such malfunctions are obligated to be repaired by a housing department plumber after you write an official statement about a malfunction there. But the time for troubleshooting in this case cannot be predicted even theoretically.

The second approach is to fix the problem yourself. Let's look at it in more detail.

Repairing a leak using cement and a medical bandage

If a malfunction is detected, the first thing to do is shut off the water supply to the apartment. Then ordinary cement is diluted in a small container and cut into pieces of approximately 200 mm. required quantity bandage (the bandage should allow you to wrap the pipe at least 2 times).

After this, the bandage is soaked in cement mortar for the time necessary for it to be completely saturated, after which the area where the leak occurs is wrapped with this bandage. Thus, a kind of cocoon is created above it, which is again coated with the solution on top. Then the bandage must dry (at least 24 hours).

You can complete the job by painting the patch to match the color of the pipe. Instead of cement, you can use heat- and moisture-resistant glue (an option is epoxy glue).

This pipe repair option is effective only in this case. if you can turn off the water first. Otherwise, the water will quickly wash away the solution, and it will not be possible to eliminate the leak.

Using rubber to repair leaks

A strip of rubber 20-50mm wide is cut from a car or bicycle tube. The length of the piece is determined by the diameter of the pipe (it must be wrapped around the pipe at least two or three times). Next, the problem area is wrapped in rubber “pull-in”, and the rubber itself is fixed in place with a clamp or copper wire on both sides.

For this purpose, a factory bandage can be used, which includes the same clamp and rubber seal.

Use of factory-produced repair compounds

A very convenient and effective way to eliminate leakage using so-called self-hardening rubber. In retail chains it is sold in a metal tube and is a two-color paste.

The mixture is squeezed onto a palette, mixed thoroughly, then applied to the leak site, which must first be thoroughly cleaned. The mastic hardens within a day.

Another troubleshooting option is to use cold welding. The solution is also a two-component solution and should be applied to the site within 1.5-2 minutes of completion of mixing.

Cold welding can be applied to a clean, grease-free surface of the pipe, without even draining the water from the main line.

Using medical and table salt to eliminate leakage of bandages

This option is suitable for eliminating small leaks that have occurred in joints (couplings, elbows, etc.). To do this, simply wrap a bandage around the leakage area, sprinkling its layers with salt. The latter dissolves and the leak site becomes coked.

The method does not guarantee 100% elimination of the malfunction, but sometimes it allows you to eliminate the malfunction with minimal effort.

The “official” way to fix this type of leak is to use a factory bandage, in which the standard rubber is replaced with a piece of rubber that has an oblong shape. It is needed in order to compensate for the difference in diameters of the joining sections of the pipeline.

Having wrapped the area of the leak, the rubber is pressed with a clamp, which becomes “skewed”, but the area is compressed quite well and the fault is eliminated.

All of the above options are temporary in nature and are designed to ensure the use of the water supply (heating) system until the pipe is replaced with a new one.

It is best to take this opportunity to replace the pipes with plastic ones (for cold water supply) or metal-plastic ones (for heating and hot water supply).

Eliminating leaks in plastic pipes

Fixing a leak in a plastic pipeline is quite easy even for people who do not have relevant experience. This is explained physical and chemical properties the pipes themselves.

To do this, you may need to cut out the area with the leak and solder a new piece of pipe using a special soldering iron (polyfuse).

Often there is no need to cut anything. It is enough to simply glue the area on the outside of the pipe, or wrap it tightly in several layers with electrical tape.
It is possible to use “makeshift” welding, when the damaged area is sealed with molten plastic.

Eliminating leaks in sewer pipes

Leak in cast iron system sewerage can occur at the junction of cast iron pipes. Its elimination is carried out depending on how the specified pipes were originally connected:

  • in the case where lead chasing was done, the place where the leak occurred is cleaned. Then the resulting gap is re-caulked. To do this you will need lead cones, a hammer and a chisel. Lead is a soft material and easily fills a crack;
  • in those cases. when cement mortar has been used, first remove its remains (hammer, chisel). The work should be carried out quite carefully, because... there is a possibility that the old cast iron pipe may split. Having removed the cement, the gap is cleaned, then filled with flax strands and clogged cement mortar. Time completely dry– 24 hours,
  • if a leak is found on the pipe itself, you can use a bandage (see above) or caulk the hole with a wooden peg (peg), which is selected according to the diameter and hammered in,
  • another old way to eliminate leaks in cast iron sewer pipes is the use of technical sulfur. The material is pre-ground to a powdery state, poured into the socket and heated to the melting point. A significant disadvantage of the method is the serious health hazard posed by inhaled sulfur vapors.
  • jute and hemp ropes impregnated with resins. It is used when assembling bell-shaped pipelines made of asbestos cement or cast iron.
  • asphalt mastic made from bitumen. Suitable for ceramic pipes.

If we are talking about eliminating leaks in polypropylene sewer pipes, then most often we use the recently introduced sealing tape for pipes (to eliminate leaks on the pipe itself) or silicone-based sealants, if we are talking about leaks at the junctions of pipes and fittings.

It is best to use neutral sealants and apply them using a special gun.

Constant monitoring of the condition of pipelines in your home and prompt troubleshooting will protect your home and the homes of your neighbors from troubles associated with water leaks.

Leakage may result from prolonged use of pipes, mechanical damage or shear. A leaking pipe leads to flooding of the living space, so it is necessary to fix the problem as quickly as possible. Is it possible to seal a leaking pipe without the help of a plumber? What products are recommended for use at home? Read on.

A pipe leak can occur:

  • at the junction of pipes with fittings;
  • in the body of the pipe.

How to fix a leaking fitting

Elimination of leakage of the connecting fitting is carried out according to the following scheme:

  1. First of all, it is necessary to tighten the threaded connection. To do this:
    • you will need a wrench and an adjustable wrench;
    • the pipe is fixed using an adjustable wrench;
    • use a wrench to tighten the fixing nut;

The thread must be tightened very carefully and slowly. Over-tightening may cause the fitting to crack.

  1. if tightening does not help, then most likely the problem lies in worn threads or sealing material. The problem can be resolved by replacing the insulating material. To do this:
    • it is necessary to turn off the water supply to the residential premises. The shutdown is carried out using a tap located in the apartment (if the leak has formed on a pipe that is part of the wiring of the residential premises) or the tap of a common building riser (the tap is located in the basement);
    • the thread is unscrewed completely or up to half, depending on the complexity of the situation;
    • the old sealing layer is removed;
    • new insulating material is wrapped;

  • the fitting is installed in its original place;
  1. If the listed measures do not allow you to seal the leak in the pipe, then the fitting will need to be replaced. Replacement of the connecting element is carried out as follows:
    • the old fitting is removed. If the connection is threaded, then simply unscrew the thread. If a permanent fitting is used (welded or compression), then it is necessary to cut off the connecting element;
    • is installed new element plumbing system. The threaded fitting is screwed into the old place. To install a weld or compression fitting, you will need special equipment(welding machine or press device).

When replacing one-piece fittings, it should be taken into account that the total length of the pipeline will need to be increased, which is done by inserting an additional section of pipe. It is better to entrust the replacement of welded and compression fittings to professionals.

How to fix a pipe body leak

How to repair a leak in a pipe if there is a crack in the body? To resolve the problem, you can use one of the following methods:

  • install the clamp;
  • apply a bandage;
  • use cold welding.

Installation of the clamp

The most in a simple way To eliminate a leak on the pipe body is to install a repair clamp. The special device consists of:

  • metal case;
  • rubber seal located inside the housing;
  • fixing bolts.

You can install the clamp yourself in the following way:

  1. the leak site is cleaned of dust and rust;
  2. the pipe is wrapped with a clamp;
  3. The device is fixed.

The choice of clamp should be based on the size of the crack. To completely eliminate the malfunction, the clamp must be 1.5 - 2 times larger size leaks.

Applying a bandage

How to seal a leaking pipe if there is no clamp? To eliminate a leak, you can use a rubber, adhesive or cement bandage.

The rubber bandage is:

  • piece of rubber. A cut from a bicycle inner tube or a medical tourniquet used to stop bleeding is ideal. Use a rubber cut to wrap around the cracked section of the pipe;
  • small clamps, wire or other fastening straps for securing the rubber to the pipe.

The adhesive bandage is installed according to the following scheme:

  1. the section of the pipe where the leak has occurred is cleaned of dirt using a solvent;
  2. fiberglass or medical bandage is impregnated with special glue;

  1. the applied composition is expected to dry completely.

Instead of special glue, you can use epoxy resin or, when using metal pipes, ordinary table salt.

How to seal a leaking pipe epoxy resin look at the video.

A cement bandage is an analogue of an adhesive bandage. The bandage or fiberglass is impregnated with cement mortar prepared in a ratio of 1:10.

Cold pipe welding

A relatively new way to eliminate leaks is to use a so-called cold welding composition. How to coat a pipe to prevent it from leaking? For various types pipes (metal, plastic, and so on) different cold welding compositions are used.

Detailed instructions for using the mixture are given on the bottle with the active substance. Here is the general algorithm:

  1. Before applying the mixture, the damaged section of the pipeline is cleaned of dirt. If the composition must be applied to a metal pipe, the crack is additionally cleaned of paint and rust;

  1. A special composition is applied to the damaged area. If liquid cold welding in the form of glue is used, it is advisable to apply it with a brush. If a plasticine-like composition is used, then before application it is necessary to thoroughly knead it until a homogeneous mixture is obtained;
  2. the cold welding substance is evenly distributed throughout the entire area of the cracked pipeline, covering 3–4 cm more than the crack itself;

  1. the composition is left until completely dry, which takes an average of 2.5 - 3 hours.

To ensure that the area restored by cold welding does not stand out, the dried compound can be cleaned with sandpaper and painted.

All methods given in the article for eliminating leaks on the pipe body, except for the use of cold welding, are only a temporary measure. To completely get rid of the problem, it is necessary to completely replace the damaged section of the pipeline. It is advisable to involve qualified specialists to perform this operation.

Leaks in the heating circuit in the dead of winter are common. The defect can be effectively eliminated using available means by sealing the leak until the end of the heating season without draining the water from the system.

Leaks in the heating system occur due to various reasons and in different places contour: on straight sections or at pipe connections.

Leaks on straight sections

The cause of leaks in metal pipes heating systems that have been in use for more than one year, in more than 95% of cases there is corrosion (rusting) of the metal.

Even thick-walled galvanized pipes in heating circuits are eaten away by rust over time. The destruction of metal upon contact with water is a natural process that has not yet been completely overcome.

The trigger for metal destruction can be:

  • mechanical, chemical internal damage to the pipe;
  • changes in temperature or pressure;
  • damage to the protective outer layer.

Pay attention! If a leak occurs in the old heating pipe, then most likely this is a warning about total wear and tear of the entire system.

In autonomous heating systems that are installed from modern polymer materials, the causes of leaks are wrong choice pipes

When the owner, out of ignorance or for reasons of saving money, purchases pipes for cold water or pipes not intended for use under pressure, for DHW systems or heating system. In this case, simply sealing the leak is not enough; it is often necessary complete replacement communications.

Leaks at connections

Leaks in the connection area occur if the thread has become unusable (for example, it has become stuck and was torn off).

Almost every homeowner has encountered the problem of leaking pipes. Moreover, it does not matter at all what these pipes are made of: metal-plastic, copper or polypropylene. Pipes can leak both at their junction and on any part of their surface. The causes of leakage can also be very different, ranging from poor quality pipes to the skill of the specialist involved in the installation. Only when trouble has happened, there is no time to look for those responsible, you need to urgently solve the problem. We’ll talk about how to quickly and efficiently fix a leak in a polypropylene pipe.

In fact, if a leak develops in a pipe, it is not always the master’s fault. Completely other factors may also play a role here:

    Incorrect temperature when soldering polypropylene pipes. Because of this, a gap may form at the junction of the pipe and the fastening element. How to fix a leak polypropylene pipe there is only one way - to replace the defective structural element with a new one.

    The nut has become loose. If the locking nut is really just loose, then tightening it, and thereby eliminating the leakage of the tightening fitting, will not pose any problems. If the nut is defective (or the internal gasket has deteriorated), then there is a reason for more serious repairs. Some in similar situations cover the leak with sealant. But this is only a temporary solution to eliminate leaks in a polypropylene pipe. The fitting needs to be changed, and the sooner the better.

    Poorly prepared pipe. Polypropylene pipes with uneven cuts when installed using push-in fittings will leak in any case.

    Joints of polypropylene pipes connected with glue, will leak if:

      the wrong type of glue was used;

      everything is fine with the adhesive, but after installing the polypropylene pipes the water was turned on too early; the glue did not have time to “grab” properly, and as a result a leak appears.

Options for repairing leaks in a polypropylene pipe can be very different, and they differ, first of all, in their quality. Most reliable way eliminate the leak - replace the damaged pipe section with a new one.

Soldering through fittings using the high-temperature coupling method gives excellent results. But sometimes it is not available, and therefore in certain situations they use other methods of eliminating leaks.

So, a polypropylene pipe has burst in your house. It is quite possible to eliminate the leak and on our own. This is not to say that it will be easy, but there is nothing super complicated in such a repair either. The main thing is to have them at hand necessary tools and consumables.

To eliminate leaks in polypropylene pipes using standard soldering, you will need a special soldering iron (the so-called polyfuse). But, unfortunately, it is not always at hand, or even the neighbors have it.

It is not difficult to get out of the situation in this case; there is a method of “handicraft welding”. When using this method, breaks in a polypropylene pipe are sealed using the material from which the pipe is made. What should I do? Apply a hot metal object (for example, a regular nail or screwdriver) to the crack. The polypropylene will begin to melt, which you need to immediately use and cover up the hole. Sometimes you don’t have to heat the nail; an ordinary lighter is enough to fix the leak.

Sometimes it is not possible to eliminate a leak in a polypropylene pipe using a soldering iron. This usually happens when a crack has formed at the junction of pipes, and getting to it with a soldering iron is problematic. In such situations, use alternative method eliminating the leak. To do this, you will need only two things: firstly, a clamp of the required size, which can be bought at any hardware store, and, secondly, a special industrial hair dryer to heat the joint. We heat until the polypropylene softens, then we put a clamp on the pipe and tighten it tightly. The leak in the polypropylene pipe has been fixed. Of course, not every person keeps an industrial hair dryer at home, but if necessary, it is easy to rent.

How to eliminate a leak in a polypropylene pipe in the most effective ways

1. Fixing a leak in a polypropylene pipe using cold welding

Using cold welding, you can join almost any material, from wood to marble and ceramics. But in this case, we are more interested in sealing pipes made of a certain material. How to eliminate a leak in a polypropylene pipe using the cold welding method? Here are the step-by-step instructions:

    Prepare the repair site. To do this, remove all dirt from the surface of the pipe, degrease it and sand it with sandpaper.

    Prepare a polypropylene patch, which you are going to apply to a crack in the pipe. The dimensions of the patch should be bigger hole, and it needs to be treated in exactly the same way as the surface of the pipe.

    Prepare a cold welding solution. To do everything correctly, carefully read the instructions on the package. After you knead the mixture (if required), it should warm up a little and acquire some plasticity. Knead the composition only with rubber gloves.

    Ready mixture Apply immediately to both surfaces and attach the patch to the pipe. If necessary, secure with a tourniquet or clamp.

    Wait about an hour– that’s exactly how long it takes for the mixture to harden. After this, you can process it in the previously planned way: for example, paint it. But water cannot be allowed to flow through such a pipe yet. The fact is that the mixture will become as strong as possible only a day after its use.

    If there is some mixture left after work, It’s not at all necessary to get rid of it. Wrap in plastic and leave until better times.

2. Eliminating leaks in a polypropylene pipe using sealant

Using sealant to fix a leak is not a full-fledged pipe repair, but only a temporary solution to the problem you are facing.

Once again we need to remind you about important point. No matter how you plan to fix a leak in a polypropylene pipe, first mandatory needs to be prepared for repairs. Namely, you should degrease and clean all necessary surfaces. Special attention Pay attention to the joints of the polypropylene pipe and fitting.

Sealant for eliminating leaks can be of different types:

    Neutral. Suitable not only for polypropylene pipes. However, to apply it, you will need a mounting gun.

    Acid. If the pipes in the apartment are not durable, then it will be completely useless for repairs.

    Silicone. Just like neutral sealant, silicone has universal properties. His main field of activity is socket joints of sewer pipes.

3. Sealing a leaking section of a polypropylene pipe

Before gluing, as in all previous cases, the polypropylene pipe must be prepared for repair. After cleaning the pipe, it would be a good idea to dry it, even with a simple hairdryer.

After this, we select the material from which we will make the bandage for the pipe. This can be plastic or fiberglass (the main thing is that the repair material can be glued to the polypropylene pipe using epoxy glue). If you intend to use fiberglass to eliminate a leak, then keep in mind: it needs to be wrapped around the pipe at least five turns.

There are also certain requirements for the width of such a patch: it must be at least one and a half times the diameter of a polypropylene pipe. Apply glue to the bandage material, wrap it around the leaking pipe, and then press it with pre-prepared clamps.

Before running water through the pipe, you need to let the glue dry. The waiting time depends on the type of adhesive, but usually room temperature it dries for at least a day. If the temperature environment about 15 degrees, then this will take two to three times longer.

How to fix a leak in a polypropylene heating pipe

One of the features of this type of renovation is that you will most likely have to clean up decorative panels, hiding heating pipes behind them. This is necessary in order to accurately determine the location where the leak occurred.

The second feature is the constant presence of heating pipes hot water. Based on this, the methods for eliminating the leak will be somewhat different from the usual ones. However, nothing complicated. To eliminate a leak in a polypropylene heating pipe, a regular bandage and simple table salt will suffice.

Found a crack in your pipe? Now bandage it like an injured hand. After each turn of the bandage, sprinkle it with salt. The trick here is that the salt takes on the function of glue and blocks cracks in the polypropylene pipe. And if the cracks are very small, you can even refuse the bandage. From inside the pipes the salt will soon stick various kinds scale, and the leak will become clogged.

People also use another (no less simple and reliable) method to eliminate leaks in a polypropylene pipe. All it needs is a small piece of soft rubber. Cut it from an old car inner tube (a bicycle tube will also work), tightly wrap the hole in a polypropylene pipe, and secure it with a clamp on top. Leak fixed! The only thing is that it is better to use not one clamp, but all three: attach one above the hole in the polypropylene pipe, the other two for insurance along the edges of the rubber. Width rubber patch should exceed the width of the crack by several centimeters.

Another way to eliminate a leak in a polypropylene pipe is to buy a special bandage. This is something like a clamp with thick rubber. Even a person far from plumbing knowledge can figure out how to put such a bandage on a hole and eliminate the leak. The bandage wraps around the perimeter of the pipe and is firmly secured with bolts.

Leaks appear not only due to the formation of cracks in polypropylene pipes. The places where the pipe connects to the elbow or coupling are often the weakest in the entire structure. How to fix the leak in this case? Wrapping the problem area tightly with rubber helps. After this, apply two clamps: on the fitting and on the pipe.

Although some difficulties may arise here due to the fact that the diameters of the polypropylene pipe and fitting are different. In some cases, even a factory bandage will not help, since it is made for pipes of a certain size. A way out of the situation has long been found folk craftsmen. Three or four turns of rubber from the chamber are applied to a polypropylene pipe, the diameter of which is smaller. The fitting is wrapped only a couple of times. The difference in thickness is thus evened out. We attach a clamp on top and the leak is eliminated.

Another option for eliminating a leak in a polypropylene pipe is to simply wrap it with fabric pre-impregnated with epoxy glue. After the fabric hardens, there will be no trace of leakage.

As you can see, almost all of the considered methods for eliminating leaks in a polypropylene heating pipe do not require special skills or any incredible effort. Just remember that these are temporary measures. At any moment flow into problem areas may resume. So here’s some advice: after the end of the heating season, be sure to replace the damaged piece of polypropylene pipe with a new one.
