Depending on your preference and general colors garden, you can easily pick up trees with foliage painted in almost all colors of the rainbow: from white and silver to almost black-violet, from lemon yellow, orange-peach to purple. And some trees have in their arsenal several successive colors or leaves, colored at the same time in 3-4 colors.

Trees with variegated foliage

The most elegant, at the same time romantic and elegant, is considered to be white. When apple and cherry trees have faded, trees with decorative leaves can pick up their baton. Usually White color does not completely color the sheet, but frames it in the form of a border or spots of various shapes. If the terms "Argenteomarginata" or "Variegata" are present in the name of a plant variety, this most likely indicates that the leaves have a white border or spots. Among the most common are the American ash-leaved maple "Variegatum" (Acer negundo "Variegatum").

Norway maple "Drummondii"

Very popular with landscape designers lovely variety Drummondi Norway Maple (Acer platanoides "Drummondii"), whose characteristic five-lobed leaves are pink when blooming in spring, and in summer acquire a very beautiful creamy white border. It is very hardy (zone 4), unpretentious tree prefers fertile soils, grows poorly on poor sandy and acidic soils. Does not tolerate flooding and salinity. The brightest border on the sheet is in late spring-early summer, then in the sun it can turn slightly green or even burn. Therefore, the ideal place will be where at noon the maple will be covered by the openwork shadow of taller trees.

There are many trees in which the white color of the leaves is emphasized by the presence of pink. A truly fabulous and romantic combination. It is not for nothing that decorators love the ash-leaved maple variety "Flamingo" (Acer negundo "Flamingo"). The name itself speaks for itself. Blooming in the spring, the leaves of this small tree(sometimes growing as a large shrub up to 4-5 m), acquire a very spectacular pink color, and later become white-motley.

Whole-leaved willow "Hakuro-nishiki"

If your site is sufficiently moist, choose a wonderful variety of whole-leaved willow "Hakuro-nishiki" (Salix integra "Hakuro-nishiki") for your garden. It is usually sold as a tree grafted onto a bole, which can grow up to 3m in diameter. Since the grafting site is the most vulnerable in severe winters, it is recommended to carefully tie it with reeds or non-woven materials in autumn to avoid frost damage. Young leaves are the brightest in color, so it is best to cut the plant regularly to maintain an attractive rounded shape and stimulate the growth of young shoots.

You need to place such elegant trees in the most visible place, for example, near the gazebo, in the center of a meadow or flower bed, not far from the path or terrace, where you can admire the color of the leaves from a close distance. Such a light elegant tree will look especially good against the background of coniferous and deciduous trees with a dense crown and dark green color (for example, black pine or European spruce, chestnut, beech, hornbeam, bird cherry, fruit - pear, cherry, apple, apricot).

Trees with silvery foliage

All those who have rested in the southern countries and admired the olive groves come home inspired by the idea of having a tree with silver foliage. Unfortunately, olives in Ukraine can winter only on the southern coast of Crimea (the famous olive grove in Partenit confirms this), but there are also reliable and wonderful silver-leaved plants that more than fill this gap.

Of the large trees suitable for planting around the perimeter of a small or in the center of a spacious area, we can recommend felted linden (Tilia tomentosa "Silver Globe"). This variety of linden has not only a regular, dense crown, which practically does not require pruning (while being easily shaped), but also beautiful silvery rounded leaves up to twelve centimeters in size, dark green above, slightly fluffy at the beginning of development, whitish on the underside. - felt. In bright sunlight, this linden is fabulously beautiful. In addition to the excellent decorative qualities that it possesses, are plentiful, fragrant flowers. Felt linden is resistant to pests and diseases, frost-resistant, it is one of the most shade-tolerant species, it is more drought-resistant than small-leaved linden. A very valuable breed for southern regions with limited rainfall. Looks great in alley planting, in groups and singly.

Poplar white "Nivea"

In case in your area ground water close enough to the surface, you can plant not only willows, but also white poplar "Nivea" (Populus alba "Nivea") with a wide, spreading or pyramidal crown and light gray bark. Young branches are white tomentose at first, the leaves are almost snow-white below. White poplar is frost-resistant, photophilous, but tolerates shady areas. It is drought-resistant, although it grows faster on moist and fertile soils. Spring sanitary and shaping pruning consists in removing damaged and thickening branches. From poplars, beautiful alleys and wind-shelter fast-growing scenes along the perimeter of the site are obtained. A magnificent decoration of the banks of reservoirs and rivers.

Also a wonderful silvery coloration has Scandinavian mountain ash "Magnifica" (Sorbus intermedia "Magnifica"). The tree is often multi-stemmed, with a dense, oval or pyramidal crown of about 5-7 m. The leaves of this mountain ash are noteworthy: whole, round, shallow-lobed, silver-pubescent, so that the whole tree seems white-silver. In autumn, the tree is covered with orange-red clusters of edible, sour- sweet fruits without bitterness, which remain on the branches for a long time. This mountain ash does not present special requirements for growing conditions. Very hardy and wind resistant. It tolerates drought, but thrives on sufficiently moist, fertile soils, with a pH level of about 6.0-7.0. The plant reacts positively to the content of lime in the soil. Poorly tolerates salinity and waterlogging of the soil. Mountain ash is photophilous, although it tolerates partial shading well. Almost no pruning is needed.

In the central and southern regions of Ukraine, you can grow very beautiful tree with silvery graceful foliage and weeping crown pear willow "Pendula" - Pyrus salicifolia "Pendula". Already from the name it is clear that this tree in the form of leaves and crown resembles the beloved white willow. But at the same time it remains quite compact and elegant. Oblong leaves until the beginning of summer are covered with a silvery fluff. Creamy white flowers completely cover the branches in mid-spring, resulting in small fruits that are inedible. Quite unpretentious tree, drought-resistant, responsive to watering and top dressing. There are no special requirements for soil and location. For the prevention of diseases, you can use the same drugs as for the orchard.

Loch is narrow-leaved. Photo by Victoria Roy.

Silver goof (Elaeagnus commutata) and narrow-leaved goof (Elaeagnus angustifolia), which is often called the Ukrainian olive, will become an indispensable silvery accent in the gardens. These are large shrubs or small trees 6-8 m high and 4-6 m wide with a spreading crown and silvery pubescent shoots. In spring they are covered with a mass of small, yellow fragrant flowers. Excellent honey plants. The fruits are similar to olives, yellowish, sweetish in taste, edible. The leaves are lanceolate, gray-green above, silvery below, pubescent. It develops well only in open sunny places. A very valuable breed, especially for central and southern regions with hot summers, infertile and salty soils.

Swiss willow

For small plots as a great accent on the lawn, as well as on the shore of a small decorative pond, we recommend two types of willows: Swiss willow (Salix helvetica) - beautiful shrub native to the Alps garden centers sold as a small tree grafted onto a trunk (crown diameter about 1 m). The leaves of this graceful plant are silvery white throughout the season. In March - April, before the leaves bloom, silvery protruding catkins appear on the branches. Enough unpretentious plant but does not like calcareous soils. May be susceptible to rust. An elegant, fast-growing, compact tree native to the Alps, it looks great in the middle of a flower bed, in a rockery and or even in a pot on a patio or in front of a porch. Similar to appearance and agricultural technology creeping silver willow - Salix repens var. Argentea. With light pruning, you can maintain any shape and size, as well as get a great garden topiary plant in a regular (classic) style.

Such trees should be placed in an open sunny place. They look especially good in combination with purple deciduous and rich green conifers, perfectly complement flower beds in pink and purple tones, serve as a spectacular decoration of a pond, stream or Alpine slide. Since the silver color itself in plants is an adaptation to intense solar insolation and protection from overheating and dehydration, we can say with confidence that when choosing plants for a hot, dry area, you can always count on plants with a silvery, blue color. The same rule applies to conifers.
