Trees with silvery foliage
All those who have rested in the southern countries and admired the olive groves come home inspired by the idea of having a tree with silver foliage. Unfortunately, olives in Ukraine can winter only on the southern coast of Crimea (the famous olive grove in Partenit confirms this), but there are also reliable and wonderful silver-leaved plants that more than fill this gap.
Of the large trees suitable for planting around the perimeter of a small or in the center of a spacious area, we can recommend felted linden (Tilia tomentosa "Silver Globe"). This variety of linden has not only a regular, dense crown, which practically does not require pruning (while being easily shaped), but also beautiful silvery rounded leaves up to twelve centimeters in size, dark green above, slightly fluffy at the beginning of development, whitish on the underside. - felt. In bright sunlight, this linden is fabulously beautiful. In addition to the excellent decorative qualities that it possesses, are plentiful, fragrant flowers. Felt linden is resistant to pests and diseases, frost-resistant, it is one of the most shade-tolerant species, it is more drought-resistant than small-leaved linden. A very valuable breed for southern regions with limited rainfall. Looks great in alley planting, in groups and singly.
Poplar white "Nivea"
In case in your area ground water close enough to the surface, you can plant not only willows, but also white poplar "Nivea" (Populus alba "Nivea") with a wide, spreading or pyramidal crown and light gray bark. Young branches are white tomentose at first, the leaves are almost snow-white below. White poplar is frost-resistant, photophilous, but tolerates shady areas. It is drought-resistant, although it grows faster on moist and fertile soils. Spring sanitary and shaping pruning consists in removing damaged and thickening branches. Also a wonderful silvery coloration has Scandinavian mountain ash "Magnifica" (Sorbus intermedia "Magnifica"). The tree is often multi-stemmed, with a dense, oval or pyramidal crown of about 5-7 m. The leaves of this mountain ash are noteworthy: whole, round, shallow-lobed, silver-pubescent, so that the whole tree seems white-silver. In autumn, the tree is covered with orange-red clusters of edible, sour- sweet fruits without bitterness, which remain on the branches for a long time. This mountain ash does not present special requirements for growing conditions. Very hardy and wind resistant. It tolerates drought, but thrives on sufficiently moist, fertile soils, with a pH level of about 6.0-7.0. The plant reacts positively to the content of lime in the soil. Poorly tolerates salinity and waterlogging of the soil. Mountain ash is photophilous, although it tolerates partial shading well. Almost no pruning is needed.
In the central and southern regions of Ukraine, you can grow very beautiful tree with silvery graceful foliage and weeping crown pear willow "Pendula" - Pyrus salicifolia "Pendula". Already from the name it is clear that this tree in the form of leaves and crown resembles the beloved white willow. But at the same time it remains quite compact and elegant. Oblong leaves until the beginning of summer are covered with a silvery fluff. Creamy white flowers completely cover the branches in mid-spring, resulting in small fruits that are inedible. Quite unpretentious tree, drought-resistant, responsive to watering and top dressing. There are no special requirements for soil and location. For the prevention of diseases, you can use the same drugs as for the orchard.

Swiss willow
For small plots as a great accent on the lawn, as well as on the shore of a small decorative pond, we recommend two types of willows: Swiss willow (Salix helvetica) - beautiful shrub native to the Alps garden centers sold as a small tree grafted onto a trunk (crown diameter about 1 m). The leaves of this graceful plant are silvery white throughout the season. In March - April, before the leaves bloom, silvery protruding catkins appear on the branches. Enough unpretentious plant but does not like calcareous soils. May be susceptible to rust. An elegant, fast-growing, compact tree native to the Alps, it looks great in the middle of a flower bed, in a rockery and or even in a pot on a patio or in front of a porch. Similar to appearance and agricultural technology creeping silver willow - Salix repens var. Argentea. With light pruning, you can maintain any shape and size, as well as get a great garden topiary plant in a regular (classic) style.
Such trees should be placed in an open sunny place.
