Essential oil - for ticks and nematodes. Essential oils - repellents, fumigants and insecticides Essential oils in the fight against mites

Every owner of a four-legged friend knows how dangerous tick bites are for the health of the animal. The stores now have a wide range of various protective equipment. But some dog breeders prefer to use not chemical, but natural preparations. And among them, one of the first places is occupied by essential oils for dogs from ticks and fleas. Let's see how justified their use is and what varieties it makes sense to use for protection purposes.

Ready-made preparations in the form of drops and sprays, sold in pet stores, have a pronounced effect. According to the instructions, they do not enter the blood of the animal, but only accumulate in the dermis or remain on the surface of the coat. But a poisonous substance can still have a side effect on the body. Therefore, many do not like to use acaricidal drops. I personally know several such dog breeders who do not use chemicals to treat your pets.

But on my part, this is by no means a call to abandon them and switch to essential oils. The following information is for informational purposes only. The choice is always yours. It should only be taken into account that the specific smell of the fluid extract of plants can protect your beloved pet not only from fleas and ticks, but also from midges, flies and bees, which sometimes annoy not only us, but also animals.

What essential oils help against ticks and fleas

It must be understood that any products prepared with essential oils do not kill ticks that have fallen on the animal's fur or skin. They only scare them away, that is, the action of ethers is of a preventive nature. But this does not mean that using natural remedies does not make sense. Only you need to choose real natural, not synthetic options.

Below is a list of essential oils that can be used to treat your dog's coat for ticks and fleas. You can use only one type of oil or as part of complex mixtures. But about the recipes for such funds later, but for now the rating is a list of plants, essential extracts from which it is advisable to take note:

  • tea tree;
  • carnation;
  • palmarosa;
  • lavender;
  • thyme;
  • juniper;
  • swamp mint;
  • rosemary;
  • geranium;
  • citronella;
  • eucalyptus;
  • cedar.

Some essential oils, such as pennyroyal, are best avoided for puppies and dogs that are expecting offspring. Also, do not use these natural remedies if they act negatively on the pet: irritation, nervousness or other negative consequences appear.

Recipes for processing dog hair

  1. Dissolve 1/3 teaspoon of tar soap in 250 ml of water, add tea tree oil, clove, juniper, grapefruit and thyme there. Esters add 2 drops. Shake the solution well before use.
  2. Mix tea tree oil and thyme 2 drops each, citronella and lavender 3 drops each. Such a tool helps not only from ticks in dogs, but also from fleas. The mixture is added to oil or water (50 ml).
  3. Lavender and thyme - 1 drop each, eucalyptus - 2 drops. Essential oils drip into vodka (1 teaspoon). The total amount depends on the size of the dog. This tool is used once a week.

Processing methods

The most important thing is that when processing a pet, two rules are followed:

  1. You should be comfortable using the prepared emulsion.
  2. The product should not get on the mucous membranes of the animal (and yours too).

Application by hand

The tool can be applied a little bit on the palm and distributed over the dog's coat. It is better to do this against hair growth, so that the ether gets not only on the surface, but also in the thickness of the fur. Before the procedure, it is advisable to wear rubber gloves, although if the smell on the skin does not scare you, you can do without them. After processing, the dog's coat needs to be combed.

But before applying the active substance must be added to the base oily base. It can be any vegetable oil, but it is better to take almond oil. It contains sulfur, which also has some acaricidal effect. For 2 tablespoons of base oil, take 10-15 drops of the essential mixture.

When treating a dog with essential oil-based tick and flea preparations, do not forget about the paws!

Using a spray bottle

There is another way and, in my opinion, it is more convenient and rational. The composition is prepared from water (1 cup) and a teaspoon of essential oils. The emulsion is poured into a spray bottle. It is desirable that it be fresh every time.

Before a walk, this liquid, shaking, is sprayed over the animal's coat. Just do not forget to lift the hair in order to process the entire cover well. And also the hair needs to be combed so that the product is evenly distributed.

Collar processing

There is another method that is more often used to protect against fleas. The essential oil or mixture is applied to the dog's collar. Periodically, you need to drip in a new way, as the esters evaporate quickly. Using this method, it is impossible to remove existing fleas, but you can scare away the "newcomers".

Shampoo use

To enhance the deterrent effect can be used when bathing a dog detergent with essential oils. It is done very simply - a few fragrant drops are added to the amount of shampoo needed for washing. How much shampoo you need depends on the size of your dog. At the same time, 15 drops of an ethereal mixture are taken per 100 ml of washing liquid.

You can use any shampoo. But I can tell you that an experienced veterinarian who sees our dog advised us to wash the dog with human shampoo, and not with the one they sell in a pet store - like this ...

Although you can still take tar shampoo - it also has a preventive effect against subcutaneous mites. Tar, by the way, can also be bought in a regular cosmetics store, and not in a zoo.

Protect your dog from ticks and fleas different ways. If essential oils are suitable for your pet and you, then this method should not be discounted.

Spring has come, and there are still many warm days ahead, which have only one minus - annoying insects, among which there are those that pose a real danger to health. And chief among them are ticks. Those who lead an active lifestyle and spend a lot of time in nature have to think about potential danger tick bite. We will talk about a simple and very effective solution to this problem.

Today, sellers vying with each other offer a variety of creams and sprays, which, according to them, can get rid of ticks. But in fact, all that is needed in order not to become a victim of these unpleasant insects is the most ordinary roller for cleaning clothes and essential oil.

The essential oil should be spread over the roller gently and evenly so as not to leave stains on clothes later. Before you go for a walk in the park or go out of town, you need to go over the clothes you plan to wear with a roller several times. But here it must be borne in mind that not every essential oil is suitable for these purposes.

Essential oils that protect against ticks

lemon oil is considered the most effective in the fight against ticks, as well as such unpleasant insects as fleas and ticks.

lavender oil, which many people like so much, is a real poison for ticks. Mosquitoes and a wide variety of midges do not like this smell.

mint oil- a real natural repellent, very toxic to insects.

Oil schisandra chinensis has a bright citrus aroma. It will protect not only from ticks, but also from fleas.

Eucalyptus oil in the case of protection against ticks is also very effective. It can be used both as an independent remedy and in combination with lemongrass oil.

N/B! Some people mix water with essential oil and apply it on the body like a spray. But it should be borne in mind that on hot days such a mixture will quickly evaporate, and besides this, contact with the oil and the steamed body can cause skin irritation.

Another summer problem is sweat. But it also seems to have been resolved. Anyway .

This article is an overview of foreign scientific journals. Essential oil, it turns out, has prospects not only in aromatherapy and perfumery. When humanity is tired of poisoning itself and environment pesticides, the search for alternatives began. Scientists have turned towards natural compounds that do not have a horrendous list of restrictions in use and side effects. Among the objects were essential oils, which in nature are credited with the ability to drive away pests. AT last years the idea was put forward about the possibility of using essential oils and their components as an environmentally friendly safe means plant protection, as well as to combat diseases of bees.

And in the last 20-25 years, research on this issue has been launched around the world. The first encouraging results have been obtained. found by us in scientific literature We bring the results to your attention. Maybe someone will find the article boring and too scientific, but for specialists, the information is of undoubted interest.

Many housewives know that if you put a clove of garlic in a bread box and change it periodically, then the bread does not get moldy for a long time. This suggests that the volatile secretions of garlic have excellent fungicidal properties. At present, the fungicidal action of essential oils is being actively studied both in medicine and in other industries.

From the soil occupied by catnip, only 9 species of 45 identified fungi were isolated and representatives of the genus Fusarium, which is famous for causative agents of root rot, have not been found.

The essential oil of basil, dill, anise at a concentration of 3000 mcg -1 inhibits the growth of many fungi. The effect of 49 types of essential oils against gray rot of fruits was studied (Botrytis cinerea). Some oils have been recommended as a preventative for this disease.

The fungicidal activity of essential oils is even more widely used in medicine, but this is a separate article.

Insecticidal, acaricidal and nematocidal action of essential oils

It has long been noticed that if you plant some fragrant plants next to crops, they repel pests. If you patiently spray indoor plants with infusion of garlic, then the spider mite gradually recedes. When sowing well-known marigolds in a pot with a houseplant affected by nematodes, after a while it becomes clear that as these cute ornamental plants, nematodes feel less and less comfortable, and when the marigolds survive the tenants, you can pull them out and valuable indoor plant feel healthy and beautiful again. And as you know, marigolds contain a large number of essential oil.

Eugenol, geraniol, thymol and citral caused the death of saprophytic nematodes at a concentration of 2.5 mg/ml.

Studies have shown that coriander seed oil and its main component, linalool, were effective against spider mite and nematodes. Acaricidal action was noted in 1,8-cineol, α-terpineol, verbenol, and verbenol is the most toxic.

When assessing the contact toxicity of wormwood and tansy oils, it turned out that even in high dilutions they caused the death of mites within 48 hours. The most effective was wormwood oil obtained by steam distillation. Essential oils of cumin, anise, oregano, eucalyptus are effective against melon aphids and spider mites as a fumigator.

Essential oils can potentially serve as an alternative to strong synthetic fumigants. They have low toxicity to warm-blooded animals, high volatility, and are toxic to pests that damage products during storage.

Monoterpenes are of particular interest. Monoterpenes are typical lipophilic compounds and are readily incorporated into insect metabolism and influence biochemical and physiological processes. Their mechanisms of action are not always fully known, but it is assumed that a neurotoxic effect is manifested.

Under laboratory conditions, the repellent and toxic effects of essential oils of mineola, or tangerine, were studied. (Citrus reticulata var. Tangerine), bigardia, bergamot, pine, weeping cypress (Cupressus funebris), pine and lemon eucalyptus (Eucalyptus citriodora) against the hay eater - a storage pest.

Essential oils in the form of a solution in acetone were applied to paper at a dose of 200, 400, and 800 μg/cm 3 . After evaporation of acetone, adults were planted on paper. All oils actively repelled insects. Activity in descending order is as follows: cypress - pine - tangerine - bergamot - eucalyptus - bigardia.

When fumigated, all essential oils were toxic to adult insects. Bigardia oil was the most toxic, up to 82% of individuals died. When essential oils were added to controlled gaseous environments during fruit storage, the toxicity of essential oils to the hay eater increased.

Monoterpenoids, especially thymol and carvacrol, have an antifeedant effect on cutworm caterpillars. (Spodoptera litura) . The food rejection efficiency was 85%.

Of the 22 essential oils, the strongest action against the bean weevil was observed in creeping thyme (the main components of the oil are thymol and carvacrol) and marjoram (tepinen-4-ol).

The contact and fumigation action of cinnamic aldehyde α-pinene, anethole, extracts of clove and star anise against club beetle and corn weevil was revealed.

Eugenol (from clove and basil) is effective against barn weevil and grain grinder. Thuja essential oil has also proven to be effective in controlling barn pests. When processing, up to 95% of females and 100% of males of the four-spotted weevil died. Egg survival decreased from 100% in control to 0.8%.

The effect of 18 essential oils on Sitophilus orysae damaging rice during storage. Oils of anise, arnica, citronella, clove, eucalyptus, fennel, grapefruit, St. John's wort, juniper, myrrh, patchouli, petitgrain, rosemary, tea tree, thyme, yling ylang to a greater or lesser extent caused the death of the pest.

Rosemary and eucalyptus showed the maximum effect. At doses of 43.8 and 36.4 ml/l of air, they were lethal for 95% of insects (LD 95).

Among the components most effective against this rice pest were benzaldehyde (15.6 ml/l air), 1,8-cineol (44.2 ml/l air), p-cymene (39.0 ml/l air), thujone (44.5 ml/l air), terpinen-4-ol (66.4 ml/l air).

Allelopathic action of essential oils

It has long been noticed that plants can influence each other. There is even a whole science that studies this interesting phenomenon of nature, and it is called allelopathy. Studies have shown that many essential oil plants have this property. For example, when sowing clary sage in the same field, the plants develop poorly, and seedlings are very unfriendly. When sowing catnip with other crops, it was noted that it has a positive effect on the initial growth of the Moldavian snakehead, wheat, buckwheat, coriander, dill), and in marigolds marked (Tagetes signata) growth slowed down.

On the other hand, the essential oil has a negative effect on the germination of radish seeds and the growth of watercress and wheat seedlings. At a high concentration (10 µl/Petri dish), catnip oil and its vapors reduce the germination of these crops by 80 percent or more. The aqueous solution is more active than the volatile fractions. The lowest concentration (1 µl/petri dish) completely inhibits the growth of watercress roots. Plant growth reactions are more sensitive to essential oils than seed germination. root system more sensitive than above-ground organs. Inhibits the growth of fungi in the soil.

Why are insects afraid of the smell of essential oils.
Far from all representatives of essential oils help from insects and their bites, but only those that are rich in monoterpenes and aldehydes. These oils have antiseptic, analgesic, and stimulating blood circulation effects.
Scientists conducted research and found that lice, mosquitoes, ants, moths and ticks do not tolerate components containing alcohols, aldehydes, terpenes and eugenol. These substances, quite often, are the main components of essential oils.
