Longitudinal sawing with a chainsaw: which attachments to use? Types of accessories for chain saws Chainsaw calm chain for rip sawing

The Stihl company produces not only chainsaws and brush cutters, but also consumables for them. In this article we will talk about Stihl saw chains, their types, markings, characteristics, and compare them with competitors.

All Stihl chains are marked, thanks to which they can be identified and determined for which models of chainsaws and types of work they are intended.

The name of the chain model must indicate its length (number of links), pitch and width. The type is also indicated. Type is an internal brand designation, thanks to which company specialists can determine the type and shape of the cutting tooth, the dimensions of the link and connecting elements. The designation can be complete, or it can be abbreviated capital letters, for example the Picco Micro 3 chain, abbreviated as PM3.

The average user, in principle, does not need such information, because in order to choose the right headset, it is enough to know the characteristics of the chainsaw, the planned volume and types of work.

For ease of selection, the Shtil company website has an electronic consultant that automatically generates a list of chains suitable for a specific chainsaw model.

The service is convenient and understandable, but it has one big drawback: you can select chains only for. If you have a different chainsaw, then you will have to search by characteristics and name, which is not very convenient, since the list of models is quite large.

Below we suggest watching a short but interesting and informative video about Stihl chains, their production process and quality control.

Now let's look at specific models of Stihl chains, their markings, characteristics and purpose.

Picco Micro (PM)

Stihl chain with a low profile, recommended by the manufacturer for use on lightweight chainsaws and loppers. The peculiarity of the chain is a soft cut, with reduced kickback. It has four versions, which differ in the number of links. This:

  1. 3/8″ P Picco Micro (PM), 1.3 mm (50);
  2. 3/8″ P Picco Micro (PM), 1.3 mm (51);
  3. 3/8″ P Picco Micro (PM), 1.3 mm (55);
  4. 3/8″ P Picco Micro (PM), 1.3 mm (56).

This chain can be used on Shtil MS chainsaws, etc. etc. Recommended retail price from 490 to 550 rubles. The specific price depends on the number of links. Also, the Stihl saw chain can be sold in coils of 50 and 100 meters, and can be riveted using a Shtil riveting machine or similar. Information on how to rivet correctly can be found on our website.

3/8″ P Picco Micro Mini 3 (PMM3), 1.1 mm

Distinctive feature– the narrowest possible cut. Abbreviated designation PMM3. It is recommended for chainsaws entry level, as well as height cutters and brush cutters. Has three versions:

  1. 3/8″ P Picco Micro Mini 3 (PMM3), 1.1 mm (39);
  2. 3/8″ P Picco Micro Mini 3 (PMM3), 1.1 mm (44);
  3. 3/8″ P Picco Micro Mini 3 (PMM3), 1.1 mm (50).

Can be used on chainsaws Shtil MS, 180, . It belongs to the comfort class, because it has minimal vibration and recoil.

Important: a chain with a width of 1.1 mm must be used with a corresponding bar, otherwise it will dangle in the mounting socket, which will lead to rapid wear of both the headset itself and the guide bar.

1/4″ P Picco Micro 3 (PM3), 1.1 mm

Recommended especially for pole saws and compact chainsaws, for example, MS 150 TC-E or MS 193 T. It is considered exclusive because it has a non-standard 1/4″ pitch, narrow and flat design. It has three versions, the length of which is 56, 64 or 72 links.

3/8″ P Picco Micro 3 (PM3), 1.3 mm

This model belongs to the comfort class and is intended for professional use on light and compact chainsaws. The chain offers high performance, comparable to standard performance, while at the same time reducing recoil, which is achieved due to its low profile. There are several options:

  1. 3/8″ P Picco Micro 3 (PM3), 1.3 mm, 50 links;
  2. 3/8″ P Picco Micro 3 (PM3), 1.3 mm (51);
  3. 3/8″ P Picco Micro 3 (PM3), 1.3 mm (55);
  4. 3/8″ P Picco Micro 3 (PM3), 1.3 mm (56).

3/8″ P Picco Super (PS), 1.3 mm

Picco Super, according to the manufacturer, is the world's first chain that has a chisel tooth. Developed by Shtil specifically for forestry professionals. Easy cutting, comfortable level of vibration and smooth running. It has a clean cutting surface, which is important for those who carve wood using a chainsaw. Execution options:

  1. 3/8" P Picco Super, 1.3mm (44);
  2. 3/8" P Picco Super, 1.3mm (50);
  3. 3/8" P Picco Super, 1.3mm (55).

Can be used with both professional, semi-professional and household chainsaw models.

1/4″ Rapid Micro Spezial (RMS), 1.3 mm

Designed specifically for figured cutting on wood. A distinctive feature is the shortened upper edge of the tooth, thanks to which there is no need to put pressure on the saw in order for the chain to cut into the wood. It is characterized by high speed and smoothness when performing curved cuts compared to conventional chains that have a similar 1/4″ pitch. Available in two versions:

  1. 1/4 Rapid Micro Spezial, 1.3 mm(56);
  2. 1/4 Rapid Micro Special, 1.3 mm(64).

Rapid Micro chain series

The Rapid Micro chain line includes about 10 types, each of which has an average of three versions with different characteristics pitch and width. Rapid Micro series chains combine tooth shape and steel quality. They are recommended for use on Shtil chainsaws operating in agriculture(semi-professional). Short designation RM.

Rapid Super (RS) range

This line is designed for professionals. Of course, no one prohibits the use of such chains on household chainsaw models, but their cost is slightly higher than conventional chains; for example, Picco Micro 3 will be much cheaper.

According to the manufacturer, Rapid Super is capable of long time work without sharpening and their productivity is not just high, but extremely high. This headset easily copes with heavily contaminated or frozen wood. If you look at the design options, it becomes clear that this chain is definitely not for light and compact chainsaws. Maximum size, released for sale - 105 links, this is almost twice as long as the chain on Shtil MS 180.

Rapid Duro 3 (RD3), 1.6 mm

This line of Stihl chains has an increased service life due to the use of special hard alloys in them. Intended for use in agriculture, i.e. recommended for semi-professional Shtil models. There are quite a lot of options. Rapid Duro 3 (RD3), 1.6mm can be had in 0.325, 3/8 or 0.404 inch pitches. The most expensive chain in this line costs about 2,500 rubles. and has a length of 66 links.

3/8″ Rapid Duro Rescue (RDR), 1.6 mm

This is a special Stihl chain for emergency work, in our country it received the nickname “Supertooth”. Due to pobeditovy tips on the cutting edge of the tooth, it can saw wood with nails, glass, brick and other building materials. Where there is maximum difficult conditions and a regular chain will be helpless, Rapid Duro Rescue (RDR) will do everything as quickly as possible.

It has a length of 72 teeth, is not available in other versions, and is recommended for use on saws for rescue work, for example, Shtil MS 461 R with a power of 4.4 kW. Manufacturer's recommended price for Rapid Duro starts from RUB 9,060.

All prices that we announced in the article were taken from the company’s official website.

We invite you to watch a video showing a comparative test of Stihl saw chains. The video is in English, but it shows that a concrete insert is poured into the tree trunk on which the cutting speed test is being carried out. A regular headset cannot handle even three cuts, while a special one makes more than 10 cuts and remains operational.

Which chain to use for rip sawing

Chainsaw users often receive a question: which chain is suitable for rip sawing and whether there are chains specifically designed for this purpose.

On at the moment There are no chains specially designed for sawing a tree trunk lengthwise, and most likely there will not appear, since any saw chain can be used for these purposes. The difference between a regular headset and a longitudinal one is the sharpening angle.

Using a straightening machine, you can make a special one from a regular set - one that facilitates longitudinal cutting. You can find information on exactly how this is done on our website.

Which chain is better Stihl or Oregon

It is quite difficult to choose which chain is better, Shtil or Oregon, because they are almost the same in quality. The Oregon company, like Shtil, specializes in their production and invests in development, constantly improving and releasing new models.

If you compare at the user level, the Oregon is a little softer, they dull faster, but they are lighter. Shtilevsky ones are almost all hardened, the metal is difficult to sharpen, but holds an edge a little longer.

Interesting. According to experts, the issue of headset quality is relative. Many users first use used oil for lubrication. motor oil, and then they say that this or that model and brand of chain is of poor quality, although the reason for premature wear lies in metal shavings, which are contained in any used oil, even that which has had time to settle before filling.

Reasons for rupture of the saw set

Sometimes, while using a chainsaw, the headset may break. This phenomenon is not common, but occurs from time to time. There may be several reasons, the first and most common is severe wear and tear. During operation, the edges rub against the bar, as a result the metal gradually wears off and the chain, unable to withstand the load, breaks.

Important! The use of high-quality adhesive oils can significantly extend the life of the saw set.

The second reason is the untimely replacement of the drive sprocket and saw bar or their replacement separately. According to the recommendations given by manufacturers, the saw set, bar and drive sprocket should be replaced as a set. This will prevent wear, stretching and tearing as a result of increased loads.

Third, this is marriage. The machine disk rotates at high speeds, and if the groove depth is set incorrectly or for some reason the working stroke of the machine increases, then a split second will be enough to trim the edges of the connecting links. If, after sharpening, you do not check its quality and the presence of cut links, then during work under load, the cut link may break.

The fourth and last one is a defect in the rivets. Common cause a circuit break is caused by its incorrect connection or reuse connecting links. If your cutting set is torn, then this information will be very useful.

Stihl sharpening machine

In conclusion, a little about sharpening machine Calm. Today, the USG machine is presented on the company's official website. Sharpening on the machine works automatically, and feeding is done manually. The machine is capable of sharpening not only cutting edge working tooth, but also a depth limiter, which is impossible to do on similar competing machines. For more information about the Shtil sharpening machine and its operation, watch the video.

Conclusion

The Shtil company produces high-quality chains for its chainsaws and pole saws, which are popular among both professionals and ordinary users. If we compare Stihl chains with competitors, they are a little stronger, but more difficult to bend manual sharpening, which is not very good for ordinary users, because for sharpening you have to contact a service center.

What distinguishes professional lumberjacks from those new to this business is that the former understand exactly how to determine the quality of a chainsaw. It makes little sense to take into account the power of the device alone, since the configuration of the cutting element is of decisive importance. In the case of a chainsaw, this element is a chain, which consists of cutting, driving and connecting links. The cutting link includes a depth limiter and the cutting part itself, the operation of which is somewhat similar to a plane, that is, the thickness of the chips depends on how far the upper edge is extended. The leading link takes on the function of rotating the chain along the groove and distributing the lubricant, and the connecting links are designed to connect the remaining elements of the chain to each other. Their construction always takes place at a strict angle, the same applies to subsequent sharpening, since the slightest change in the angle in one direction or another will lead to the chainsaw not working.

The first time such tools began to be used back in 1920, but then the teeth were flat and straight, which could not but affect the final cutting result, and it was quite difficult to work with such a saw. A certain breakthrough in this area occurred in 1947, when a fundamentally new type chain teeth - the L-shape made it possible to cut the material much faster, in addition, the process of sharpening the teeth was simplified, so it is not surprising that the invention of Joseph Cox, who proposed such an idea, was behind short term became a sales leader. If we consider our days, then we have reached almost the same version of the chainsaw, which is based on a chain system with a crescent-shaped cutting profile, for which the type of wood does not play a significant role.

What to look for when selecting a saw chain?

Key characteristics of a saw chain include pitch, shank or drive link thickness, cutting depth and profile size, and chain length. The direction of the cut should also be taken into account. It is from these parameters that you need to start when you purchase a chain to replace a worn one, or when you need to purchase a chain for some special needs. To avoid mistakes, you can look at the device passport, where the manufacturer indicates the main parameters of the saw. If we are talking about the initial purchase of a tool, then these parameters themselves must correspond to the purposes of using the chainsaw.

This parameter is a value in millimeters, although in the documentation it is customary to write inches. It is calculated by dividing the distances between three rivets by 2. It is based on this characteristic that it is customary to divide canvases into several main groups:

  1. Step in 0.25 in (6.35 mm) used in devices with minimal power, which are suitable exclusively for dacha work. It will not be possible to cut large logs with such a pitch. Chains for chainsaws with this pitch are not very common.
  2. The next two groups where the step is used 0.325 and 0.375 inches (8.25 and 9.3 mm respectively) are the most common of all, since approximately 70% of all chainsaws produced in the world belong to these groups. Accordingly, they can be used for most existing household tasks. But there is one little trick! Since it is quite easy to confuse the numbers 0.325 and 0.375, chains with pitches of 0.375 are designated 3/8, that is, 3/8 inches.
  3. The last group in increments of 0.404 and 0.75 inches (10.26 and 19.05 mm) used for the most complex tasks. In this case, we are talking about a logging tool rather than a saw for household use. That is, chains with such a pitch can only be found on professional chainsaws.

There is a direct relationship between the step size and the performance of the tool, but you also need to take into account that a large step requires a more powerful motor. The cutting quality of devices with large pitches is still inferior to devices from the first three categories, since the teeth there are more densely spaced. For a power of 2.5 liters, a step of 0.325 mm is suitable, and for a more productive chainsaw it is better to install a saw blade and chain of 3/8 mm, as this will help unleash the saw’s full potential.

Drive link thickness

In this case, a division into several main categories is also used in accordance with this parameter. We are talking about thickness values such as 1.1; 1.3; 1.5; 1.6; 2 mm (0.043’’, 0.050’’,0.058’’,0.063’’,0.080’’). This characteristic, measured in inches, affects how smoothly the cutting blade will move while the saw is running.

  • Chains with a pitch of 1.1 mm are used on low-power household chainsaws, as well as on chainsaws intended for (carving).
  • 1.3mm pitch chains are more common. For example, the famous chainsaw is equipped with chains with exactly this pitch. And in general this is the most popular step.
  • Pitches of 1.5 and 1.6 mm have chains that are intended for professional and “semi-professional” (farm) chainsaws.
  • 2 mm - this pitch is found exclusively on chains installed on very productive and powerful chainsaws in the professional segment.

Low and High Profile Chains

What do you need to know about chain profile height? It determines what the cutting depth of the saw will be. Based on this parameter, the saw can be either low or high profile, respectively, in the first case the chips will be removed thinner, but the work will be somewhat slower, while in the second case the depth and productivity will be greater. For low-profile tools, a parameter of 0.635 mm is used, and for high-profile tools, 0.762 mm is used. If we consider devices for household use, then they are always low-profile, while professional equipment can be produced in two versions. At the same time, in order to stabilize the vibration that inevitably occurs during operation, manufacturers make a balance between the profile height and the number of steps. For a small step, make a high profile, and vice versa. Failure to comply with this rule will lead to the fact that it will be impossible to work with a chainsaw for a long time, although the wood will be cut very quickly. This balance must be maintained if there is an intention to sharpen at home; in all other situations, all that remains is to choose a saw for the home or for professional cutting.

Main types of links

If we consider the most common types of links, then these are chisel links that can most often be found on professional equipment, And chipper, which are supplied for simple chainsaws. The first option in cross-section is a little similar to the number 7, and this design allows you to work with the saw as quickly as possible, since the link digs into the material evenly. Cutting occurs more accurately, but sharpening such links at home is extremely difficult, since the slightest deviation from permissible angle eliminates all the advantages of this design. In the case of a chipper, there is no need to maintain strict angles; also, such a link is not so afraid of contamination, although there is a higher load on the tool. For home use, the second option is more suitable, especially if you don’t have the skills to sharpen a saw. As for the material, chromium-nickel steel is mainly used, although if particularly necessary, if it is necessary to work with particularly strong material, carbide tips can be put on the teeth, as evidenced by the markings on them.

Chains for rip and cross cuts

The name of the chains corresponds to the direction for cutting fibers they are intended for. To work across, an acute sharpening angle of the link is not needed, since the resistance of the wood is not as great as when working in the longitudinal direction. Each type of wood requires the choice of one direction or another, and if we are talking about professional work with wood, which also involves longitudinal cutting, then you will need to sharpen the teeth to 5-15 degrees, while for work at home 25-35 degrees is enough . Demand for longitudinal chains minimal, since for longitudinal work it is more reasonable to use circular saw. It happens that it is quite difficult to find a model that works lengthwise, even in a specialized store. For work at home, it makes no sense to look for such a saw, since cross-cutting devices will perform all household tasks without difficulty.

How to determine whether a chain is suitable for longitudinal or cross cutting?

  • For cross cutting, the chain sharpening angle is 30 degrees.
  • For longitudinal sawing, the sharpening angle of the saw chain is 10 degrees.

Stihl's rip saw chain is designated PMX. For example, STIHL 63 PMX 50.

Oregon will have the letter R in its chain model index. Example: 73RD100R

Is the sequence of the cutting links important?

In the usual case, when a saw is manufactured at a factory, it is customary to place two driving links on one cutting link, thereby making 50% of the total cutting teeth. Then the productivity of the equipment remains at the same level, and the quality of the cut does not suffer, but in order to reduce the cost of the chain, cutting links can be placed not every step, but after one or even two steps, which will bring the total number of cutting links to 37.5%. A chainsaw will become cheaper, but the quality of cutting will greatly deteriorate, so it is better not to pay attention to such devices.

Carbide chains

Such chains are much more expensive, and they have a special purpose - working with frozen wood or contaminated material. In all other situations, the money will be wasted, since for simple wood there is no point in carbide tipped No.

Major chain manufacturers

Almost any online store or specialized salon offers chainsaw components, including chains, from Husqvarna (Sweden), Oregon (Canada), and Stihl (Germany). Each manufacturer has its own advantages over its competitors, but the quality of products produced by these companies is at approximately the same level.

Video about chainsaw chains

Now almost everyone has a chainsaw, but many use it only for its intended purpose. Harvesting firewood, pruning branches, all these works are performed, as a rule, no more than once a year; the rest of the time the chainsaw gathers dust on the garage shelf, but this is not correct. The chainsaw can be used as a power unit for various devices, this is what will be discussed in this article.

There are special attachments for chainsaws on sale, with the help of which the functionality of the tool is significantly increased.

Using additional equipment, you can make a wood splitter from a chainsaw; it will help you cope with logs that are difficult to split with an ax, or a boat motor, for trips on a rubber boat.

Essentially, attachments are necessary in order to remove maximum benefit so that it does not gather dust on the shelf, but is used daily to solve a wide variety of problems.

No special education or skills are required to install attachments; everything is simple and easy.

What attachments are there for chainsaws?

Today it is developed by manufacturers and is commercially available large selection chainsaw attachments. More specifically, for your saw you can buy:

  1. Boat motor attachment.
  2. Winch.
  3. Pump.
  4. Motor drill.
  5. Wood splitter
  6. Device for cutting boards.

If you like to make things with your own hands, then the saw will be an excellent assistant, because it can be used as a power unit for your inventions. For example, the video below shows how you can make a go-kart for your child from a simple chainsaw. It's very interesting and not as difficult as it seems.

And the next video shows a homemade snow blower, the engine of which is a chainsaw. The idea is very good, but the snow blower is a little unfinished, but it is still able to make cleaning the territory of a private house easier.

Now let’s look at each of the attachments in more detail, look at the pros and cons of use, and draw a conclusion about how the use of the attachment affects the life of the chainsaw and its performance.

boat motor

The attachment is designed for installation on small rubber boats with a transom. Specifications:

  1. Gear ratio 1:2.
  2. Maximum speed in still water is 20 km/h.
  3. Three-blade propeller with a diameter of 150 mm.
  4. Fuel consumption is 1 liter per hour.
  5. Weight when assembled is 8 kg.

Such characteristics allow the nozzle to be used by those who do not need high speed movement through the water, but simply need to get from point “A” to point “B”. It is popular among fishermen because it is light and compact and fits into the trunk of a passenger car.

All necessary fasteners are supplied with the nozzle. There are instructions for installing the nozzle and its proper use.

The main advantage of using such an attachment for a chainsaw is the savings on purchase outboard motor.

You can learn how to install a chainsaw on a boat motor attachment by watching the video.

Winch

Another useful attachment for a chainsaw is a winch. It can be used to lift loads weighing up to one and a half tons. Conventional electric winch, requires a electric current, which significantly reduces its capabilities. A chainsaw with a winch can be used anywhere.

Having such an attachment on a firewood harvesting site, you can load tree trunks, cross-cut into several logs. Also, if necessary, such a nozzle will allow you to pull out a stuck car, it is not suitable for trucks.

The cost of a winch for a chainsaw is a little more expensive than an electric one, but its mobility and ease of use make up for the difference.

There are several models of chainsaw winches on sale, which may differ in cable length, size and weight. On average, the length of the cable is about 30 meters, weight no more than 12 kg.

This is interesting: using a plow together with a chainsaw winch, you can process land plot, while spending a minimum of effort.

How to plow the ground with a chainsaw and winch is shown in the video. Advantages this method is that in this way it is possible to cultivate the land for suburban areas where there is no possibility of connecting to electricity.

Pump

A special attachment called a chainsaw pump will help you pump out water from a flooded cellar, pump up a water tank for irrigation from a well, or simply pump water from one place to another.

The device is quite simple and does not require special skills to install on the saw. Its advantage is mobility and connection speed. In addition to the nozzle, you will need to purchase hoses. Pumps, like other saw attachments, are produced by several manufacturers, so they can have different performance and other characteristics.

This attachment is universal and can be installed on chainsaws of various models and brands. For those who are not used to paying for additional equipment for a chainsaw, you can make a pump yourself.

Motor drill

Another useful attachment in everyday life is a motorized auger (ice auger). There are a lot of options for this console, including homemade ones. It can be useful not only for amateurs winter fishing, because it can be used to drill holes for installing fence posts.

Advantage over electric options in mobility, since the drill can be used regardless of the availability of electricity.

Important! To install the drill attachment, you will need to remove the standard clutch and drive sprocket from the chainsaw, for which you need to lock the crankshaft. You can find information on how to properly remove the clutch from a chainsaw on our website.

An adapter coupling is supplied with the saw drill, which is installed instead of the drive sprocket.

Wood splitter

Thick lumps are difficult to split with an ax; to make the process easier, you can install a wood splitter attachment on a chainsaw. It is screwed into the block and, due to its cone-shaped shape, splits it.

The nozzle is universal and can work on various models chainsaw User reviews about this device are positive, because it really facilitates the process of splitting large lumps.

The cost of the wood splitter attachment is reasonable, currently it does not exceed 1000 rubles. You can buy it on specialized websites or in petrol stores. Installation of this gadget does not require any specific skills; the manufacturers provide instructions.

Jointer

If you need to plane a small number of boards, but you do not have a specialized machine, then the jointer attachment will help you do this.

The attachment is mounted on standard bolts for fastening the tire; instead of the clutch, a drive pulley is installed on which the belt is put. Through the belt, a force is transmitted from the drive pulley to the driven pulley, which causes the planing shaft with two knives to rotate.

The system is very simple and reliable; the quality of processing depends on the maximum number of revolutions of the chainsaw on which it is installed.

In order to compensate for the lack of load on the engine when using the jointer attachment, you can slightly reduce maximum quantity rpm You can find instructions for adjusting the carburetor of a chainsaw on our website.

The attachment is not universal; for it to work, you need to replace the drive sprocket with a pulley; the mounts are different for all chainsaws. Therefore, when purchasing, you need to consult and choose a model of attachment suitable for your chainsaw.

Bark beetle

Another attachment for a chainsaw, which is designed for cleaning tree trunks from bark.

It is very similar to a jointer, is attached in a similar way and has two pulleys and a belt. The main difference is that the bark beetle does not have a stop bar, which prevents the knives from deepening, as a result of which they only remove a certain amount shavings.

Bulgarian

One of the most popular attachments, which users only comment on positive reviews, this is a grinder, or it is also called an angle grinder, but it is not one, because it is intended only for cutting.

Attaches to the standard place of the tire. Not universal, it is selected for the model of chainsaw for which it is intended. Not expensive and easy to use. Consists of the following elements:

  • drive pulley;
  • frames;
  • driven pulley with shaft and disk mount;
  • force transmitting belt;
  • protection.

The simplicity of the design and standard grinder consumables (discs) made this attachment very popular. Its advantage is mobility, the ability to be used in places where there is no electricity.

In place of the cutting disc for metal, which is shown in the photo, you can install carbide ones for cutting concrete and use a saw with an attachment as a wall chaser.

Advice. When working with a grinder attachment, the engine experiences significant load, so it is not recommended for chainsaws with a power of less than 2 kW.

The following video shows how to assemble, install, configure and operate the attachment. The video shows that the 1.5 kW chainsaw cannot cope with the load, and there is a noticeable drop in speed. To prevent this from happening again, use more powerful saws.

Attachments for Shtil and Husqvarna chainsaws

There is no special attachment that would be suitable only for the Shtil chainsaw and would have any unique functionality that others do not have. Everything that can be installed on Shtil saws has analogues for other chainsaws, the same with Husqvarna chainsaws. For this reason, when choosing a chainsaw, you should not pay attention to the advice of sellers regarding the purchase a certain model, due to the possibility of installing on it additional equipment expanding functionality.

The only thing you should pay attention to when choosing is power, because to work with attachments it is recommended to have a more powerful chainsaw.

What devices can you make with your own hands?

Many “garage” craftsmen do not spend money on buying chainsaw attachments, but make them themselves. In fact, there is nothing complicated about them and almost everything can be made with your own hands. All you need for this is welding machine, emery and the necessary knowledge and experience, spare parts from old tools and mechanisms, for example: chains, belts, pulleys, shafts, etc., can also be useful.

On the Internet you can find information on how to make an angle grinder attachment, a pump, a winch or a drill. In order to dispel doubts, we suggest watching a video that shows a homemade attachment for a Shtil chainsaw made from an old fishing drill.

Device for cutting boards

In conclusion of the article, I would like to mention such a device as a stand for cutting boards using a chainsaw. Essentially, this is a mini sawmill that you can assemble on your own site, install a chainsaw in it and cut tree trunks into boards.

There are quite a lot of options for sawmills made from chainsaws, some are factory-made, like LOGOSOL, and some are home-made. We invite you to watch a video about the operation of a homemade, budget sawmill using a chainsaw.

Conclusion

A chainsaw is capable of not only performing transverse or longitudinal cuts of wood, it allows creativity and invention based on many tools and devices that are useful in the household, making everyday work easier or even relaxing for your own pleasure.

Remember that when using homemade nozzles for a chainsaw, you should be careful and not overload its engine, you should also not forget about safety precautions, since all responsibility in case of injury lies with you.

How to choose the right chain STIHL .

Saw chains have several basic parameters. Using them you can choose a chain that is guaranteed to fit your saw.

    Chain pitch. Usually measured in inches. There are 3/8”, 0.325”, 0.404”, ¼”. If you need a chain with a pitch of 3/8”, you must take into account that with this pitch two completely different circuits- low profile and full profile.

    Thickness of the drive chain link. Must match the width of the groove of the bar with which this chain will work. Available in 1.1mm, 1.3mm, 1.5mm, 1.6mm.

    Number of chain links. Determines the length of the chain and, accordingly, the length of the bus.

If you have chosen the parameters correctly, the chain will fit your tire exactly.

But chains also differ in types. Some cut faster, others are safer, others are more comfortable, others are adapted for special cutting conditions, etc. The differences lie in the shape of the cutting tooth, connecting links, intermediate links and materials used to manufacture these parts, the thickness of the cutting part of the chain, etc.

The site presents almost all types of chains that STIHL offers. The circuits are combined into groups in which the circuit parameters are identical different lengths. As you can see, there are more than 20 of these types. Brief description there is something for everyone. And what’s more, Stihl produces such a wide range of chains that you can always choose the right one not only for STIHL saws, but also for any other saws. And usually several types.

If such diversity makes you yawn, call or come to us. We will tell you and select the right STIHL chain. And we'll tell you how to serve saw chains how to use them most effectively. Yes, and we’ll help you sharpen it.

A chainsaw is a phenomenal device in its capabilities. There is hardly any other tool that can compete with it in terms of breadth of use. Chainsaws are intended primarily for sawing wood, but their use is not limited to this. They are widely used as a universal drive for devices of the most for various purposes. Chainsaws are used to cut metal and stone, drill wells, pump water, pull out stuck vehicles, swim, etc. The potential capabilities of chainsaws are realized using various attachments and accessories.

Such wide range Several factors contribute to the work performed by chainsaws. First of all, it is the presence of a powerful (relative to its weight), compact, reliable and unpretentious gasoline engine, capable of working in the most difficult conditions. Membrane type carburetor and a sealed fuel supply system allow the saw to work in different positions, except perhaps completely upside down. The successful design of the centrifugal clutch reliably protects chainsaw systems and components from overloads and breakdowns. Simplicity of power take-off is also important; It is easy to connect any device to the output shaft of the tool. And finally, the advantages of a chainsaw include its autonomy, which allows it to be used anywhere.

However, do not forget that amateur chainsaws are not designed to work all day in intensive mode..

Petrol cutter attachment

One of the most popular, perhaps, is the attachment that turns a chainsaw into a gas cutter.

Its main unit is a bearing unit with a shaft, at one end of which there is a driven pulley driven by a V-belt, and at the other end there is a mandrel for securing cutting wheels. Depending on the brand of the latter, a gas cutter can cut metal, stone, brick or tile. The end part of the attachment is made with a groove for attaching it to the saw.

Debarkers

To clear a log of bark, branches and growths, to select a longitudinal or transverse groove in it, to cut cups in logs when building wooden log houses, to give a rounded surface flatness and many other operations can be performed using attachments called debarkers.

By design, debarkers are divided into drum and disk. The first ones are used mainly for removing bark from logs (cinders); the disk ones are used to cut out mounting grooves, cups, recesses, etc.

The working part of the devices consists of a drum or cutter mounted in a bearing unit. Like most chainsaw attachments, debarkers are rotated using V-belt transmission. For this purpose, there is a driven pulley on their axis. By selecting the diameters of the pulleys and changing the engine speed using the accelerator, you can obtain the optimal rotation speed of the working tool, which provides the necessary processing parameters.

The figure below shows debarkers with various shapes working tools: cutter for cutting grooves (a), flat plane (b) and spherical (d), figured cutter (c).

Pump

The nozzle designed for pumping water can be used for emergency water supply to a house, watering a garden, draining a flooded basement and foundation pit, etc. It is a conventional centrifugal pump, equipped with a bracket with holes for attaching to a chainsaw and a pulley for driving the pump turbine into rotation.

The principle of operation of this chainsaw attachment is similar to the principle of operation of all centrifugal pumps. A hose is connected to the central fitting (1), which is lowered into the water. The pressure hose is connected to the fitting (3). Before starting work, the water necessary for the pump to start pumping is poured into the plug (2). When the pump turbine is rotated, a reduced pressure is created in the suction pipe, drawing in water, which is then discharged through the pressure hose.

Boer

A motor drill is a device that is useful in any household, but it is used relatively rarely, which makes its purchase not always advisable. Purchasing a drill attachment for a chainsaw will cost less than buying a motor drill.

The rotation speed of the auger during drilling should be relatively low, so a gearbox is used to reduce the speed. It can be made in the form of a V-belt or worm (preferably) transmission.

Winch

A winch driven by a chainsaw can be used to carry out the most various works: pulling out stuck vehicles, moving trees, lifting and moving building materials, towing boats and boats to land, in various emergency situations.

Its traction force depends on the power of the chainsaw and can reach 1500-2000 kg, and even more with an additional block. To perform its functions, the winch must be equipped with additional accessories: a pull-out block to increase the traction force and change the trajectory of movement, hooks, anchors, sling belts for securing to a tree trunk, rock, soil or car.

boat motor

A chainsaw with a special attachment can be used as a boat motor. A device installed on the boat with a three-bladed propeller and a gearbox with a gear ratio of 2:1 is capable of moving through water at speeds of up to 20 km/h with a fuel consumption of 1 l/h.

Devices for longitudinal sawing of logs
(mini sawmills)

Most chainsaw attachments are designed for ripping logs. Their differences from each other are in the location of the cut (vertical or horizontal), the diameter of the logs being cut, the accuracy of the cut, and ease of use.

Device for vertical cutting logs. The simplest is the device for vertical sawing of logs, shown below.

It consists of an adapter (1), attached to the tire at its base, and a guide (2), which determines the straightness of the adapter's movement. The guide is installed on the board (3), which in turn is attached to the log being cut.

The main purpose of this device for a chainsaw is to ensure the straight movement of the bar. With its help, you can not only dissolve a log into two or four parts (quarters) or cut a beam out of it, but also saw it into boards or beams. However, in the latter case, you will have to rearrange the board with the guide each time, and it will not be possible to achieve great accuracy when sawing. The unfixed end of the tire may move to the side, as a result of which constancy of parameters and complete parallelism of the sides of the beams or boards are unlikely to be achieved.

Device for horizontal cutting. Using the device shown in the photo below, logs are cut in a horizontal plane. Compared to a device for vertical cutting, it has increased functionality and accuracy, allowing you to cut boards or beams of the same thickness.

Device (other) for dissolving logs into boards

The device, which is attached to the tire in two places - the beginning and the end - has a frame structure that ensures the rigidity of the device. The mounting location (1) can move along the tire. This allows you to set the required cutting width (according to the diameter of the log) - within the length of the tire. The guides (2) can be installed at any distance from the tire, thereby ensuring required thickness cut beams or boards. The first horizontal cut is carried out using a guide frame (3) mounted on the log and serving as a base surface for the guides (2). For subsequent cuts, the flat surface (4) obtained in the previous pass is used as the base surface. During operation, to avoid pinching the saw, wedges are inserted into the cut to prevent the cut from narrowing.

If it is necessary to cut logs whose diameter exceeds the length of a standard bar, a more complex device is used, which uses a long bar. In this case, the saw’s native lubrication system does not provide high-quality lubrication of the entire chain, so there is a need for a device additional system, consisting of a tank and a hose that supplies lubricant to the end of the tire. To ensure oil supply by gravity, the tank is placed on a rack above the tire.
