How to make bar stools with your own hands? DIY bar stools: making a DIY folding bar stool

So what should you consider when determining the height of your bar stool? Let's consider the main factors:

  • Sitting pose.
  • Height.

Now let's take a closer look at an example of how to make a chair from solid wood. As for wood, the most available material– pine and birch. They are available for free sale. When choosing, make sure that they are free of knots and other damage. This is important, because the product should ultimately be quite durable.

So, for manufacturing you will need to prepare the following blanks:

  • Circle Ø360 mm and thickness 30 mm 1 pc.
  • Circle Ø260 mm and thickness 20 mm 1 pc.
  • 4 pcs. legs 30 mm thick.
  • 4 pcs. stiffening ribs 30 mm thick.

Part No. 1 will serve as a seat. As for part No. 2, it will play the role of a backing under the seat.

When cutting the legs, make sure that the wood structure is vertical, i.e. the cuts are not made against the grain.

You should also cut out the stiffeners, as indicated in the schematic diagram:

To assemble this you will need 3 types of screws:

  1. 5x80 mm – necessary for screwing the legs to a small circle.
  2. 5x40 mm - will be required to secure the main seat to the small circle.
  3. 5×20 mm – for fixing stiffeners.

Below is a step-by-step assembly process:

To prevent cracking of the workpieces, pre-drill holes for them.

At the end of the work, painting is carried out.

If you like hardware, then you can make a metal chair without much difficulty yourself. Now we invite you to familiarize yourself with the manufacturing process using photo instructions.

To work, you will need a metal strip up to 5 mm thick. After making a small sketch on cardboard, cut off strips of the desired size.

This article deliberately does not indicate dimensions, since in this case everyone can make the seat of the chair at their own discretion.

The strips are securely welded together. Pay attention to the quality of welding. Although everything will be sanded later, it is important to apply a careful weld. From this appearance the chair will only benefit.

Also, at your discretion, mark out the cross members in a chaotic arrangement inside the seat frame. It is important here to ensure that there are no openings that are too large.

Just like the seat frame, you scald all the cross members. After this, clean each weld seam from slag with a grinder with a grinding wheel installed on it, not forgetting to wear safety glasses.

To prevent injury, smooth out any sharp corners on the workpiece.

Next, make the legs from the pipes. They must be the same size, which can be determined from the table at the beginning of this article. Weld all four blanks to the already made seat. To strengthen the structure, weld cross members. They will additionally serve to support your legs. Do not rush to weld thoroughly. First on the tacks to try on and adjust everything.

If everything fits, then you can carefully weld the parts. As a result, the raw bar stool will look like this:

If you leave the legs as is, they will scratch the floor, may break tiles and, worst of all, make an unpleasant sound when they move. Therefore, wooden wedges can be driven into the lower part of the legs, as shown in the picture below. So, you can increase the stability of the entire structure.

Some kind of wooden “plugs” are not attached in any way. They will be held in place by friction and pressure. Be sure to make adjustments wooden blank so that it is flush with the leg.

When the bar stool frame is ready, it can be painted. Pre-sand all weld areas and also make sure there are no sharp protrusions. Apply primer.

You can paint the legs and seating area any color you like.

If you have your own ideas for making such furniture, be sure to write about it in the comments to this article. At the end, we invite you to consider the drawings and photos of finished bar stools. Perhaps you will find quite a few interesting ideas for yourself.

Depending on the option you choose, you will need to take solid wood or plywood. You can use metal, but in this case the work will be more difficult. We will tell you more about this in step by step description works

Before you begin, make a drawing or diagram indicating the exact dimensions of the product. So you decide on required quantity consumables.

Standard bar stool pattern

Standard dimensions of bar stools are calculated based on the distance from the bottom surface of the tabletop to the floor. The gap between the chair seat and the tabletop is usually 30–35 cm.

Based on this basic data, you can create your own product design.

Assembling bar stools

So, you have decided what material you will use. Let's look step by step at how you can make several types of chairs yourself.

Made from solid wood

When choosing wood for a product, pay attention to the most accessible species - pine and birch. They are great for this kind of work; the array can be bought in the store in the form furniture panels. Required thickness- 20 and 30 mm. You can borrow some details from old chairs.

Cut out 10 pieces:

  • part 1 – one circle with a diameter of 36 cm and a thickness of 30 mm;
  • part 2 – one circle with a diameter of 26 cm and a thickness of 20 mm;
  • part 3 – four legs 30 mm thick;
  • part 4 – four stiffening ribs 30 mm thick.

The first part will serve as a seat, the second (small circle) will serve as a backing for the seat.

Chair seat and backing

When cutting out the legs of the future chair, make sure that the structure of the solid wood is vertical.

Cut out stiffening ribs from 20 mm thick solid wood - they will serve as a footrest.

Stiffening ribs

Now start assembling the chair. To do this you will need 3 types of screws:

  • 5 X 80 – to screw the legs to the small circle and to each other;
  • 5 X 40 – for attaching the seat to a small circle;
  • 5 X 20 – for securing the stiffening ribs.

The ribs are attached to the legs using corners that are placed below, on the floor side.

Bar stool assembly process

The diameter of the holes for self-tapping screws in the plane should be 6 mm, at the end - 3 mm.

All you have to do is tint the chair with stain, dry it and paint it with varnish in 2-3 layers. Bar stool ready!

Ready bar stool

Second version of a wooden chair

These bar stools are very simple to make and easy to use. Their peculiarity is that the seat can be made straight or bent, and subsequently, if desired, upholstered with fabric.

Solid wood bar stools

  • Make a drawing;

Chair drawing

  • Look carefully at the second drawing: for simplicity of the image, it does not indicate the two upper crossbars under the seat. Don't forget to add them when assembling;

More visual and detailed drawing

  • for chair legs, use beams measuring 38 x 38 mm. You can take poplar wood if there is no pine or birch. The length of the legs will be 71 cm. Make cuts at their ends at an angle of 5 degrees;

Chair legs

  • Attach a short crossbar, the so-called chair apron, to the top part. Secure the middle and bottom crossbars in the same way;

Securing the crossbars to the chair legs

  • Attach the second crossbar to the top of the rack on the right side longer. Also install the lower one - it will act as a step;

Fastening the crossbars

  • do the same on the left side. To make it comfortable, set the height of the footrest according to the height of the people who will sit on these chairs;

Fastening the footrests on the other side

  • fasten the halves of the chair together.

Assembling the chair body

How to make a recess in a seat? There is a way to do this, although it is not easy. Make several cuts of different depths along the surface and plan out the recess with a chisel.

Recess in the seat

Sand the surface of the seat and attach it to the legs. Fill the holes for the skew screws, sand the entire chair and paint.

The chair is ready, all that remains is to paint it

Pay attention! In the first and second options, you can use plywood or chipboard to make the seat.

A metal bar stool will become a truly exclusive piece

Surely you have remains of sheet iron, metal profile and trimmings. All this will come into play.

Sketch with a pencil the shape of the future seat on a flat asbestos sheet for welding. In the photo it is indicated by red lines.

Seat sketch

According to the sketch, cut out blanks from a 25 mm strip. Weld them together.

Workpieces welded together

For the internal layout, cut blanks from the same strip.

Blanks for internal layout

Weld the workpieces and clean them. Round the corners.

Cleaned seat blank

Weld the legs from a 30 X 20 mm profile to the seat. During welding, grab the legs onto one welding point and carefully move them to the desired position.

Weld the legs from the profile

Mark the levels of the foot rest, for example 45 cm from the seat. Be guided by how comfortable this height is for your height.

Footrest level mark

Also make the footrests from a 30 X 20 profile.

The footrests are made from the same profile

Instead of plastic or rubber plugs for legs made of metal profiles, you can use wooden “heels”. They do not scratch the floor, and you can always sharpen them to the desired size.

Wooden cork blank for metal profile

These plugs do not need to be fastened with screws or fixed with glue - they adhere perfectly to friction. The main thing is to sand them to the size of the legs.

Chair primer

After the primer has dried, paint everything below the seat with black paint. Wait for it to dry.

Painting chair legs

Wrap surfaces painted black with film so as not to stain them during further work. Paint the seat red.

Painting the seat

After the chair is dry, you can use it for your pleasure!

How to avoid mistakes

Of course, there is a possibility of making mistakes. Many of them can be easily fixed, but some can ruin all your efforts. To prevent this, always follow the proverb “Measure twice, cut once.”

Use diagrams and drawings finished products, which indicate exact calculations for each part. This way you will protect yourself from extra expenses on materials and inaccuracies during assembly.

If you are new to carpentry, do not try to start work by assembling a designer chair with complex design and it’s better to discard the idea of assembling a folding bar stool. Take on the simplest model, practice, get better at it, and then gradually increase your level. If you still decide to create your own exclusive model, use special computer programs for design development and structural calculations. Among the most common, convenient and easy to use, two can be distinguished:

  • PRO-100;
  • Cutting.

Thanks to them, you will much faster build an accurate drawing of the product, verified down to the millimeter, and preview the result in a 3D model. Additional features these user programs allow you to find out the number necessary materials, which significantly reduces waste.

As you can see, there is nothing difficult in making bar stools with your own hands; this task can be easily completed. If you have any questions about this topic, please ask them in the comments. Good luck and easy work!

Do you have a bar counter in your house or apartment, but no high stools for it? The assortment in stores is not that small, but does not fit into the concept of the living room or kitchen? It's OK! From today's master class you will learn how to make DIY bar stool.

Materials for bar stool legs

The first question you should ask yourself is what will the seat of your chair be - soft or hard? If you don't know the best way to proceed in this case, leave it solid, as we did. If you don’t like it, you can upholster it at any time - with fabric, leather or any other material you like. Below you can see the diagrams and dimensions of our future bar stool.

Let's start assembling the legs

We make the legs of the chair from poplar wood - 5x5 cm, 71 cm long. In order for the legs to be inclined towards each other, the corners and chamfers at both ends must be reduced by 5 degrees. All connections are made using the technique described in this article.

We attach the middle and bottom strips, similarly by first chamfering them at an angle of 5 degrees.

After you have connected together two parts of the chair that stand parallel to each other, we begin to screw perpendicular partitions on one of these assembled sides - at the top and bottom. First we process one side, then the other.

When attaching partitions, you must take into account their placement in such a way that when the chair is ready, you can comfortably place your feet on them. This is a bar stool and it should be comfortable to sit on!

Seat manufacturing technology

The special shape of the seat will make your bar stools even more comfortable. First you need to make markings on one of the ends of the board, which we will use to make the seat. To achieve the desired shape, you can use circular saw, adjust it to different cutting depths, you can use a regular saw for this purpose. We cut the grooves and then trim off the excess wood using a chisel.

Of course that's enough the hard way to make a recess and perhaps you need to use some special tool, but you didn’t have one at hand. After you have used the chisel, you need to thoroughly clean the surface of the seat with a grinder.

Connecting the seat and legs

We complete our master class by connecting the manufactured seat and legs. To do this, you need to drill holes in the top of the legs and the bottom of the seat and use glue to place everything on the pins.

Clear sandpaper the surface of a brand new bar stool. If necessary, fill the holes with putty, paint or varnish if desired.

Ready bar stool

That's all, these three handsome men, three heroes settled in our living room. Thanks to the customized height, optimal placement of the crossbars and ergonomic seat, they have become the most comfortable and favorite in our family. Do you want to make the same? Nothing could be easier!

An interesting option to make bath chairs with your own hands

A high chair (stool) is an integral attribute a modern drinking establishment - a bar, equipped with a counter with a narrow tabletop. IN lately It has become fashionable to install such racks at home. My neighbors asked me to make a DIY wood bar stool for their new kitchen bar. After looking through a lot of information on this topic, I chose and agreed with my neighbors on the simplest design for a bar stool model. I started preparing the tools and purchasing the necessary materials.

Bar stool design

The seat height of such a stool is explained by the fact that the guest sitting at the counter must be at the same level as the bartender, who serves the client while standing. To prevent the legs of a person sitting on a stool from hanging in the air, support bars are made at the bottom of the stool. The distance from the top of the seat to the floor is usually 80 cm.

Tools

I picked up everything needed to make a bar stool with my own hands in my workshop. This is indicated in the following list:

  • wood hacksaw;
  • screwdriver;
  • drill with drills;
  • set of chisels;
  • grinding machine;
  • roulette;
  • brushes;
  • container for diluting varnish;
  • pencil.

Materials

In the store building materials purchased the following:

  • oak board 400 × 400 × 30 mm;
  • timber 50 × 50 × 3000 mm;
  • rail 20 × 40 × 2500 mm;
  • screws 30 mm – 8 pcs.;
  • plugs – 8 pcs.;
  • PVA glue;
  • stain - bottle;
  • furniture varnish - can;
  • solvent;
  • wooden dowels – 4 pcs.;
  • sandpaper.

I reflected all my steps in making a wooden bar stool with my own hands in the instructions. I took the height of the furniture and its main dimensions from a cabinetmaker I knew.

Step-by-step instructions for assembling a bar stool with your own hands

  1. I cleaned the oak board on all sides with a sander. I finally brought the seat plane to an ideal state with sandpaper.
  2. From the bottom side in the corners of the board I drilled 20 mm recesses with a drill.
  3. I decided to make the legs from pine beams 50 × 50 mm. It was sawn into 4 parts 77 cm long.
  4. I drilled 20 mm recesses in the upper ends of the supports.
  5. I cut the wooden plank with a hacksaw into 8 pieces 28 cm long.
  6. All manufactured parts were treated with stain. Impregnation favorably emphasized the structure of the wood.
  7. Covered the dried tree furniture varnish for 2 times.
  8. The upper seat base and the lower belt were assembled by connecting the legs with cross bars screws.
  9. The screw heads were covered with plastic plugs using PVA glue.
  10. I filled the holes in the upper ends of the legs with glue and inserted wooden dowels into them.
  11. Recesses in back side I filled the seats with glue.
  12. The seat was “dressed” on dowel legs. Placed a small weight on the board until completely dry glue.
  13. I glued felt circles to the lower ends of the legs. Furniture will not scratch the floor covering.

After I made a wooden bar stool with my own hands, I calculated the labor costs and financial expenses.

Labor costs

The amount of time spent on making furniture was combined into a table.

In total I made 3 chairs, the production of which took only 18 people. hours.

Cost of materials

  1. Oak board 40 × 40 × 3 cm = 300 rub.
  2. Beam 3 m = 150 rub.
  3. Rake = 50 rub.
  4. Everything else (PVA, screws, plugs, stain and varnish were available).

Total: 500 rub.

Accordingly, 1,500 rubles were spent on making 3 bar stools with my own hands. The homemade bar stools turned out beautiful and quite comfortable.

  1. Where to start?
  2. How to make a concave seat

Making any piece of furniture with your own hands is quite simple; you just need to have a tool, material and a properly designed idea. If previously the bar counter was a typical piece of restaurant furniture, now it is part of the kitchen or open living room of private houses and cottages. Today it is a fashionable element home interior, a mandatory addition to which are bar stools. Making them yourself will not be difficult if you pay attention to the master class presented below.

Where to start?

To begin with, you should define what a bar stool is. In simple words is a stool with high legs that can be equipped with a small backrest. The simplest way to make a bar stool from wood, while some elements can be replaced with laminated chipboard panels.

For making any wooden structure Drawings with precise indication of all dimensions of the product are required. They will allow you to avoid mistakes during work and determine the amount of necessary consumables.

Where to start and how to make a bar stool with your own hands? To do this, decide on the height of the bar counter. The following calculations must be made:

  1. We measure the distance from the edge of the bar counter to the floor;
  2. It is necessary to subtract 350 mm from the obtained dimensions. We get the required height of the bar stool.

For wooden options or bar stools from combined materials the height of the seat will be at the same level, so you can make a stool from any material and in any design, without making mistakes in size.

What tools are needed for the job?

In order to make bar stools with your own hands, you need the following tools:

  • roulette;
  • hammer;
  • drill with a set of drills;
  • screwdriver;
  • sanding machine or sandpaper;
  • jigsaw;
  • brush.

Features of making a chair from solid wood

If you want to make a durable and beautiful stool that is ideal for your bar counter, then you should choose solid wood as the material for it. The most accessible and most suitable species for this are birch and pine. You can purchase them in the form of furniture panels and boards at any specialized store. The thickness of the material should be 20-30 mm. The master class involves making a stool in several stages. First of all, you need to cut out 10 parts, taking into account the dimensions included in the drawings:

  • the first piece is a circle for sitting, which should be 30 mm thick and 350 mm in diameter;
  • the second part is a circle that serves as a backing for the seat. Its diameter is 250 mm with a thickness of 20 mm;
  • then four legs are cut out from solid wood 30 mm thick;
  • Lastly, we cut out 4 strips, which play the role of stiffeners in the structure. For their manufacture, you should also use material 30 mm thick.

The legs should be cut in such a way that the wood structure in them is vertical. Otherwise, the strength of the structure will be significantly reduced and it will be unreliable.

When all the wooden parts have been cut, you can begin assembling the structure. For this you need the following consumables:

  • metal corners through which the stiffeners will be attached to the legs;
  • self-tapping screws, 5x80 mm in size, for fastening the legs together and screwing them to a small circle;
  • self-tapping screws, size 5x20, in order to secure the stiffeners;
  • self-tapping screws, 5x40 in size, with which the seat will be attached to the small circle.

The chair is assembled according to the following scheme:

  1. We fasten the legs together using self-tapping screws.
  2. We install stiffening ribs that are fixed with corners.
  3. Screw the small circle to the legs.
  4. A large circle of seating is installed on top, which is fastened to the pre-assembled structure
  5. The finished chair is varnished.

The second option for making a bar stool

The drawing of this product is slightly different from the previous one. The design is a classic high stool, equipped with several stiffening ribs. Despite their simplicity, such products look very good on a home bar; they are durable and comfortable.

The rectangular seat of such chairs can, if desired, be upholstered with fabric or made concave, which will be excellent design solution for a home bar.

As in the previous version, this wooden bar stool project begins with the creation of a drawing.

To simplify the illustration, it does not show the two crossbars located under the seat. In this design they must be present.

Now let's look at how to make such a wooden chair:

  1. For the legs, four beams are taken, measuring 40x40 mm. It would be best to take pine, birch or. Each leg must be 710 mm long.

  1. We fasten the 2 legs, installing the top crossbar. The same should be done with the other two legs.
  2. We install the middle and bottom crossbars in the same way.

  1. Now we assemble from the legs general design. To do this, attach the two remaining upper crossbars and install the two lower ones, which will serve as footrests.
