Good day to all, dear friends! In today's article I would like to show you how to make a fairly relevant at the moment homemade So, now the sunset season is in full swing - this is the season when many of us make preparations for the winter from what we grew in the summer at the dacha. Namely, we will look at how to make a cabbage shredder. Many of us love sauerkraut, and many of us know how difficult it can sometimes be to prepare it. One of the problems with preparing cabbage for the winter is chopping it, of course, when you are going to prepare one or two liter jars, you will not have any particular problems with this. But when we are talking about ten three-liter jars, then shredding cabbage forks will be quite problematic, time-consuming and not as neat as it could be with the help of our shredder. This homemade product will have a very simple and primitive design from parts that you will probably find at home, in the country or in the garage. Well, enough of the long prefaces, and let’s start assembling this homemade product. Let's go!

So, for this homemade product you will need:
- Sheet of plywood (1m * 1m).
- Shovel handle.
- Wooden block.
- Round wooden stick 2 pcs (for example from wooden hanger for clothes).
- Furniture nails.
- Self-tapping screws.
- Blades for a stationery knife.
- A couple of washers.

Tools you will also need:
- Hammer.
- Jigsaw.
- Hand jigsaw.
- Ruler.
- Black gel or capillary pen.
- Drill and drill bits.
- Screwdrivers.
- Hot-melt adhesive.
- Stationery knife.

First, let's take a sheet of plywood, on it we should draw a quadrilateral. To do this, we will need a black gel or capillary pen (using a pen instead of a marker, you will achieve a thinner and more precise outline) and a ruler. The sides of the quadrilateral should be equal to 18 cm and 22 cm. We will need 2 of these quadrilaterals. After we have drawn the drawing using a jigsaw, we cut out our blanks. It should also be noted that on freshly made workpieces, a hole should be made in the center relative to the top and bottom sides and slightly offset to one of the sides. The diameter of the hole should be equal to the outer diameter of the round stick.

After the above steps, we should do the following. Namely, four racks in order to connect previously made blanks together. For them we need to take wooden block and using a hacksaw to divide it into four equal parts of 14 cm each. After we have made the racks, we will temporarily secure them with hot glue as shown in the photo below, that is, along the edges of the plywood quadrangle.

The next step is to take a cutting of medium diameter and cut off a cylinder from it with a height equal to the height of the posts, in our case it is 14 cm. And in the center of this cylinder we make holes whose diameter will be equal to the diameter of the hole made earlier on the plywood quadrangles, that is, the diameter of the round one you took wooden stick. Next, install the cylinder in the place indicated in the photo so that the holes of the cylinder and the quadrilateral coincide. We will attach it using hot glue.

Then we should take and modify the second plywood quadrangle made earlier. Near the previously made hole, you should draw a rectangle towards the far side, that is, towards the center relative to the sides (see photo). The width of this rectangle should be about 1 cm, and the length should be slightly less than the length of the stationery knife blades you took.

Cut it out, cut it out using hand jigsaw exactly along the drawn contour. And using a utility knife, we bevel one of the sides of just the rectangular hole we made (see photo).

We connect the modified quadrilateral to the previously made workpiece using hot-melt adhesive. Then we knock together the entire structure using furniture nails and twist it with wood screws. This will give us strength and reliability of the structure.

Next we need a blade from a stationery knife. The blade should be secured to the place indicated in the photo (see below). In order for the blade to hold securely, it should be secured using self-tapping screws through metal washers.

Next, we will make the next piece, on which the cabbage will rotate. To do this, cut off a 14 cm piece from a small block slightly smaller than the size of the posts and drill through holes along the edges as indicated, the diameter of which will be equal to the outer diameter of the round stick. Insert a round stick into one of the holes made.

Then we will cut out a circle from plywood, the diameter of which will be equal to 5-6 cm with a hole in the center, and the diameter of the hole in the center should be equal to the diameter of the round stick. This part will act as a large wooden washer. And install it in the place indicated in the photo. To ensure that the plywood washer does not rotate, but sits tightly and motionlessly in its place, we strengthen the connection with a pair of furniture nails.

And into the second hole we insert a round stick about 14 cm long; it will act as a handle, which we will hold on to and rotate the cabbage around its axis.

Everything is ready! All that remains is to test it, to do this we string a head of cabbage onto the axis of the “handle”, set it in place and rotate the head of cabbage clockwise until it runs out. As a result, we got a very simple and useful design, which will certainly be useful for preparing cabbage for the winter.

What could be more beautiful than finely shredded sauerkraut or various vegetable salads and dressings for first courses, including borscht, prepared for the winter? And the only thing more beautiful than this can be an electric vegetable shredder, which will help you prepare all these goodies in a matter of minutes, making the housewife’s work as easy as possible, especially if the scale of consumption of products of this type is not small. Today various trademarks offer a choice huge amount equipment of various capacities and configurations, which directly depend on the volume of processing, but prices, as you know, are “biting”, so if there is a man in the house who not only has a good head, but also his hands, then such a device can easily be made on one's own.

At the same time, you should not be afraid of not coping with the task, because the device of a vegetable shredder is very simple, and the costs of turning this idea into reality will be minimal, because any available means on the farm can easily be used. The biggest problem may arise with the electric motor, which should drive the circular knives, and if you can find a suitable device, borrowing it from some outdated equipment, then the problem can safely be considered half solved. As for the structure itself, it is a welded metal frame on which a motor and a bearing assembly are mounted, designed to rotate the disc blades, which are connected to each other by a belt. The unit itself is placed inside a rigid housing equipped with two holes - an inlet funnel designed for loading vegetables and, accordingly, the outlet itself.

The body of an electric vegetable cutter must exactly follow the contours of the metal disk with minimal gaps equal to one or two millimeters. Naturally, it is much easier to adjust the size of the shredding disc itself, which is usually made of durable duralumin steel, at least two millimeters thick. The whole difficulty lies in making three serrated crescent-shaped knives, the sharp edges of which are carefully bent to the side by no less than four to six millimeters, and the hole itself, located in the middle of the shredder. The edge of the disk is also processed by grinding, choosing an angle of 90 degrees for this work (the width of the edge is at least 10 millimeters). If it is not possible to make such a product due to lack of skills or special equipment for turning, you can order a rotating disk with knives in a workshop or even purchase it ready-made for very little money.

In the latter case, you will have to adjust the body of the electric shredder to the purchased knife, which is not very convenient. Alternatively, you can try to make a simplified design of the disk, equipping it with straight knives, instead of complex crescent-shaped slots, but then you should be prepared for the fact that the quality of operation of the finished unit will be noticeably inferior to its more advanced analogue. As for the body of such a shredder, it is best to make it from stainless steel using spot welding. To ensure maximum convenience Ideally, it should be made from two separate parts - a cylinder with a circular knife placed inside and a removable lid, to which you can attach a large funnel in the form of an inverted truncated pyramid.

This approach will ensure the use of large fruits and timely cleaning of the inside of the body from various types of waste that may interfere with the work process. Alternatively, you can use elements of the drum body from an old one washing machine, which is very convenient and does not require the use of gas welding. The belt drive elements themselves can also be borrowed from washing machine, out of order. As for the bearing assembly, it is usually made of two bearings, a housing welded to metal corners rigid frame, as well as a rotating disc blade shaft. Alternatively, you can attach the unit to the frame by making through holes in the corners of the frame and the body itself, which are ultimately connected with bolts.

Before starting the unit, it is imperative to adjust and adjust the working body and all parts connecting it into a single mechanism. When using an introductory funnel with a mouth that is too wide, you need to be extremely careful when using an auxiliary pestle, because usually such a shredder can chop an entire head of cabbage in a matter of minutes, let alone your fingers.

Every autumn it’s time to prepare vegetables in the form of a variety of pickles and canned salads. It's nice to treat yourself to this delicacy in winter.

No matter how many housewives prepare various appetizers and marinade salads, the central place in this vegetable wealth is still occupied by sauerkraut. But its appearance is preceded by a rather tedious and not very popular process of chopping heads of cabbage.

Many years ago, I remember, they said “chop the cabbage.” This is because a special chopping knife or hoe was used for this task, and not a cabbage shredder. Cabbage was chopped in a rounded wooden trough, linden or oak, and salted in it and stored until the next harvest.

And even though few people now ferment cabbage in whole barrels, they try to make the cutting process easier with the help of various devices. However, even for small volumes a special knife with several sharp steel blades, located at an angle. This type of cabbage shredder (manual, as it is called) is absolutely safe and allows you to significantly speed up slicing and improve its quality. The result is an even, thin straw that can only be cut with a regular knife by a professional chef. True, some skill is needed, but any housewife will quickly master this device, there is little wisdom.

A plastic cabbage shredder is suitable for small quantities. This simple device resembles a regular grater and is made of durable plastic with removable blades. Some products have a container for

A wooden shredder for cabbage is more productive and reliable; it is also a very simple device that many housewives prefer to use. You can buy it in a store or make it yourself. A wooden shredder is a board on which lamellar steel knives. The thickness of the cut pieces depends on the size of the gaps between the knives and the board. Usually wooden shredders for cabbage are made large sizes and install them directly above the salting container. For operational safety, some shredders are equipped with a moving hopper, shaped like a cube with a pressure lid. The head of cabbage is placed in the hopper, covered with a lid, and then moved forward onto the knives. This cabbage shredder is safe to use and has good performance.

All of the above devices make chopping only half as easy, because your hands still get tired of holding a head of cabbage. But technological progress, as we know, does not stand still, and now some housewives trust shredding to modern electric meat grinders, which have special attachments, including for cabbage. Food processor- an even more improved and modernized shredder; it deals with pieces of cabbage in a matter of minutes. And finally, the slicer is an electric vegetable cutter.

However, cabbage after shredding in this miracle technique does not turn out as beautiful as we would like, so many housewives prefer to shred cabbage more simple devices. Or the old fashioned way, with your own hands.

The cabbage knife was needed in late autumn, after the first frost. And here in the barn, lying idle, was an old two-handed saw “Friendship-2”, as it was called in the old days. This is great steel!

And the blade thickness of 1.2 mm is optimal for kitchen knives.

1. First of all, I drew the outline of the future knife with chalk. Overall length – 400 mm, blade width – 55 mm, handle length – 130 mm, handle width – 25 mm. Pressing the saw blade against the workbench with a clamp, I cut the workpiece along the contour using vulcanite from an electric grinder.

2. And then I smoothed out all the lines around the perimeter using sandpaper and pre-sharpened the blade. I cleaned all the edges and surfaces of the knife with coarse and fine sandpaper.

In order to drill holes for the rivets, we had to anneal the drilling points with a flame gas burner. After annealing, I punched and drilled three holes on drilling machine. Let me note right away: for working with Soviet steel, a drill made in the USSR is also better. The diameter of the holes (4.5 mm) was selected accordingly aluminum wire rivets (made from a thick cable rod).

BLANKS FOR HANDLES I sawed 6 mm thick plates from beech boards. Important stage in making a knife - accurately drill holes for rivets in a pair of wooden plates. To do this, pressing one of the linings with a small clamp to its “rightful” place of the handle on the blade of the knife, I drilled two holes according to the template, placed the rivet blanks and, removing the clamp, drilled a third hole.

Having pressed both beech pads together with a clamp, I drilled the same holes in the second through the holes in the first. And then by hand, carefully, using a large drill, I removed light chamfers in all the holes from the outside.

LENGTH OF BILLETS the rivets should be 6 mm greater than the thickness of the two linings and the knife blade folded together. Having inserted them into place, I carefully, without zeal, riveted the rivets. Now all that remains is to bring the knife to perfection: I manually processed the wooden pads to an oval shape with a coarse file, cleaned them with coarse and fine sandpaper and lubricated them with car oil, removing the excess with a rag. The blade was corrected on the touch of ovality.

THE TESTS WERE SUCCESSFUL: 30 liters were salted for the winter sauerkraut. I don’t offer drawings, because everyone has their own knife model. By the way, from one two-handed saw you can get at least 8 options, from a scraper to a machete.
