How to find out what kind of mother you have. How to determine the motherboard model (in different ways)

How to find out, what motherboard model is installed on your computer or laptop? Such information may be needed if you reinstalled Windows and now want to download the necessary drivers for the chipset, sound, network card. Or, for example, you decide to upgrade your computer and want to purchase a new, more powerful processor. In this case, you also need to know the model of your motherboard.
In today's article I will tell you what are the ways to find out the model of the installed motherboard.

1. The first way is with command line. For me personally, this is the easiest way and, let's say, less energy-intensive.

To call the command line in Windows, go to "Start" - "Run" (or just press the keyboard shortcut Win+R). In the window that opens, type cmd and click OK:
The command line will launch. In it you need to enter the command:

for determining motherboard models: wmic baseboard get product

for determining motherboard manufacturer: wmic baseboard get manufacturer

After entering any command, press the key Enter on keyboard:

2. The second way to find out the motherboard model using Windows itself is to call the standard utility “System Information”.

Again we go to “Start” - “Run” (or just press the key combination on the keyboard Win+R). In the window that opens, enter the command msinfo32 and click OK:
will start System Information utility: here in the right column we will see the manufacturer and model of the motherboard (in rare cases, the standard utility does not display the name of the board):

3. The next way is to use a third party program called .

This program provides complete information about the hardware installed in your computer. The program is paid, but the first 30 days of use is free.

Run the downloaded file - install the program. Then open the installed program and go to the tab main board. Here we see the model and manufacturer of the motherboard:

5. The fifth way is not software. You can remove the system unit cover by unscrewing a couple of screws with a screwdriver. After that, carefully look at the motherboard - its name will be printed on the textolite of the board itself:

6. If you have left motherboard box, then you can see the name on it:

7. If preserved User's Manual to the motherboard, then the name will be written on its cover:

8. Also the model name of the motherboard can be see immediately after turning on the computer(during the self-test of the board). To do this, press the key Pause on the keyboard (to pause the download) and read the name of the motherboard on the monitor screen. It will be written above the processor model:

The motherboard is the basis for building a computing system, so when installing new components, they must be checked for compatibility with the "mother". But in order to do this, you first need to clarify which model of the motherboard is installed in the computer at the moment.

How to find out the motherboard on a computer? I picked up a few simple ways that will allow you to quickly view the information you need. If you wish, you can even do without third-party software using the built-in Windows tools.

How to find out the motherboard on a computer

visual inspection

The easiest way to find out the model is to read the information posted on the case. But in the case of a motherboard, this can cause some problems, because manufacturers like to put information that users need in hard-to-reach places. But if there is such an opportunity, look into the system unit and look on the case, as the developer called the "motherboard".

The name can be found in the instruction manual or on the box if you bought the equipment separately. There are no more banal ways to come up with, but such methods definitely work and do not require much effort.

Command Line View

Before downloading special software that scans a PC and displays information about hardware resources and software environment in a convenient window, use the built-in Windows tool - the command line.

The motherboard model will appear, but the product name is not specified on the command line. This can be a problem, although I immediately found my device in Yandex by alphanumeric designation. Unfortunately, there is no other way to view the developer-assigned name using the built-in Windows tools. But there are a dozen utilities for viewing PC characteristics that can be downloaded for free.

Using Performance Viewers

We will not consider many options - a couple of utilities that show users information about the system and hardware component will suffice. Let's start with the free CPU-Z program, which displays technical information about the processor, RAM, video card, and, of course, the motherboard.

Launch CPU-Z and go to the "Mailboard" tab. In the "Manufacturer" line you will see the name of the "mother" manufacturer, in the "Model" field - the letters and numbers assigned to the equipment. It remains to copy the presented values \u200b\u200binto the search box and find more information on the Internet about compatibility with other devices.

Speaking of scanning a computer and displaying data about hardware and software components, one cannot pass by the powerful AIDA64 utility (formerly called Everest). This software has a paid license, but within a month you can use its features for free.

To deal with AIDA64, you also do not need to be a computer guru with many years of experience. When you start the program, a window appears, divided into two parts. On the left, there are more than ten sections that you can switch between while viewing technical information. The technical data itself is displayed on the right.

To find out the motherboard model, you need to go to the "Motherboard" tab and open the section of the same name. On the right you will see both the manufacturer and the specific designation with which you will continue to work.

Our short review of programs will not do without personal sympathies: for example, I like the Speccy program from developers from the Piriform studio. The version for non-commercial use is distributed free of charge, it takes up very little memory space.

How Speccy works: you just run the utility and see the information you are interested in about the installed components. The motherboard model is listed on the General Information tab or in the Motherboard section.

If you go to the "Motherboard" section, you will see not only the name, but also other important information - temperature, voltage, BIOS version, information about PCI slots. A categorically convenient program that should be installed on any computer along with the CCleaner cleaning utility.

Hello.

Quite often, when working on a computer (or laptop), you need to know the exact model and name of the motherboard. For example, this is required in cases of driver problems ( same problems with sound:).

It’s good if you still have documents after the purchase (but most often they either don’t have them, or the model is not indicated in them). In general, there are several ways to find out the model of a computer motherboard:

  • with the help of special programs and utilities;
  • visually look at the board by opening the system unit;
  • on the command line (Windows 7, 8);
  • in Windows 7, 8 using the system utility.

Let's consider each of them in more detail.

A special program for viewing the characteristics of a PC (including the motherboard).

In general, there are dozens (if not hundreds) of such utilities. There is probably no point in dwelling on each of them. Here are a few programs (the best in my humble opinion).

1) Speccy

To find out the manufacturer and model of the motherboard, just go to the "Motherboard" tab (it's on the left in the column, see the screenshot below).

By the way, the program is also convenient in that the board model can be immediately copied to the clipboard, and then pasted into a search engine and search for drivers for it (for example).

One of the best programs to find out any characteristics of a computer or laptop: temperature, information on any components, programs, etc. The list of displayed characteristics is simply amazing!

Of the minuses: the program is paid, but there is a demo version.

AIDA64 Engineer: system manufacturer: Dell (Inspirion 3542 laptop model), laptop motherboard model: "OkHNVP".

Visual inspection of the motherboard

You can find out the model and manufacturer of the motherboard just by looking at it. Most boards are marked with the model and even the year of manufacture (an exception may be cheap Chinese versions, on which, if anything is marked, it may not correspond to reality).

For example, we take the popular manufacturer of motherboards ASUS. On the ASUS Z97-K model, a marking is indicated approximately in the center of the board (it is almost impossible to confuse and download other drivers or BIOS for such a board).

Motherboard ASUS-Z97-K.

As a second example, I took the manufacturer Gigabyte. On a relatively new board, the marking is also indicated approximately in the center: “GIGABYTE-G1.Sniper-Z97” (see screenshot below).

Motherboard GIGABYTE-G1.Sniper-Z97.

In principle, opening the system unit and looking at the markings is a matter of several minutes. Here, problems can be with laptops, where getting to the motherboard is sometimes not so easy and you have to disassemble almost the entire device. But nevertheless, the way of determining the model is almost error-free.

How to find out the motherboard model on the command line

To find out the motherboard model without third-party programs at all, you can use the usual command line. This method works in modern Windows 7, 8 (I did not check it in Windows XP, but I think it should work).

How to open command prompt?

1. In Windows 7, you can use the "Start" menu, or enter the "CMD" command in the menu and press Enter.

2. In Windows 8: the combination of buttons Win + R opens the execute menu, enter “CMD” there and press Enter (screenshot below).

Windows 8: Run Command Prompt

  • first: wmic baseboard get manufacturer;
  • second: wmic baseboard get product .

Desktop computer: "AsRock" motherboard, model - "N68-VS3 UCC".

How to find out the motherboard model used in your PC? This question is far from being idle, since by no means all computer owners know exactly the model of their motherboard, even if they are aware of the name of the company that produced it. Meanwhile, such information may be useful, especially if you want to upgrade your computer, update the BIOS version, motherboard drivers, software, or fix any malfunction in the computer on your own.

So, let's say that you don't know the model name of your motherboard, but are determined to find out. What actions do you need to take to achieve this?

There are several ways to determine the model of the motherboard installed in the system unit of your personal computer, as well as its version (revision), and each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages. The main methods include:

  • Visual inspection of the motherboard surface
  • Determination using information displayed by the BIOS at boot
  • Determination using the built-in utilities of the Windows operating system
  • Detection using third-party software tools

Let's start, perhaps, with the simplest way - by determining the version using software utilities, including the tools that Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 10 have.

Obtaining information about the motherboard using OS tools and information software

In most versions of Windows, there is a special System Information program that allows you to find out detailed information about the system. Usually the program can be found in the "Start" menu, section "Accessories" - "Utilities". Or you can run it from the Run window by typing msinfo32.

After that, the System Information window will appear. And already on the main window of this program you can find the line "Model" (System Model). The content of this line is usually the model name of your computer's motherboard.

The following is an example of the Windows "System Information" utility

If for some reason the System Information utility in your OS does not open, or contains obviously incorrect information, then you can try another method. It can also be useful because the System Information does not always display information about the manufacturer of the motherboard.

In order to get the information you need in this way, you need to start the Windows command line, and type the following commands in it:

  • wmic baseboard get manufacturer - this command shows the company - the manufacturer of the motherboard.
  • wmic baseboard get product – this command allows you to determine the motherboard model.

There are also a number of third-party programs that allow you to get basic information about the system, including information about the manufacturer and model of the motherboard. Perhaps the most famous of these programs (largely due to its undemanding and simplicity) is the CPU-Z utility. Information about the motherboard model can be found on the Mainboard tab, in the Model line. Next to this information, you can read the revision of the motherboard.

Below is the appearance of the CPU-Z program, a tab that displays information about the motherboard.

To obtain information about the model of the motherboard, you can also recommend other information programs, for example, AIDA64.

Determining the motherboard model using the BIOS and visually inspecting the board

All of the above methods, of course, are only suitable if you already have an operating system installed on your computer, such as Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 or 10. But what if your PC does not have an operating system installed or is it not working? In this case, you can determine the motherboard model using the information provided by the BIOS. To do this, restart the computer and at the moment when the first text information appears on the monitor screen, quickly press the Pause button on the keyboard. The text on the screen will freeze and among it you can read the name of the motherboard model. Also, using this information, you can find out the version of the motherboard.

BIOS POST boot screen showing motherboard model name and version.

Keep in mind that the BIOS itself may not contain information about the motherboard, so if you enter the BIOS using the Del key, then there may not be information about the model in the BIOS Setup information. However, this does not apply to the modern version of the BIOS - UEFI. In most cases, information about the motherboard in UEFI is present.

However, it may also happen that you have only one motherboard on hand without a computer, or the computer cannot be booted for some reason. In this case, you are left with only the only way to determine the model of the motherboard - by visually inspecting its surface. Fortunately, this method in most cases does not present any difficulties, except for the fact that you may have to open the case of the system unit for this. Usually, motherboard manufacturers write their brand name, as well as the name of the motherboard model, on its top surface in large letters.

Conclusion

The motherboard is one of the most important PC devices, connecting all its components into a single whole. Knowing the motherboard model can be useful to the user in many cases, including for upgrading hardware or software. You can determine the model of the motherboard and its revision in several different ways, the choice of which depends on the specific situation and the user's capabilities.
