Tile adhesive properties. Tile adhesive and its types. Polymer based grout

If in the past tiles were laid on a conventional mortar of cement and sand, now there is an incredible amount of tile adhesives in the hardware stores. What glue to choose?

What should be the composition of the tile adhesive?

Let's consider these questions in more detail.

Types of compositions

Two main groups can be distinguished:

  1. ready mixes in the form of pastes;
  2. dry formulations.

Ready paste adhesives are sold in small buckets. They are characterized by homogeneous mass, low consumption and high adhesion. Such adhesives will cope with difficult areas and bases, but the high cost makes the use of pastes economical and selective.

Dry compositions - cement-based adhesives, are sold in bags of various packaging. Before use, prepare the tile adhesive according to the instructions.

Depending on the content, adhesives are divided into groups:

  1. cement based;
  2. epoxy;
  3. dispersion;
  4. polyurethane.

cement-based

Sold in bags in the form of dry powders. Cement-based adhesives consist of Portland cement, sand and modifiers. Additives make up less than 5% of the total composition.

The sand in the composition of the tile adhesive adds strength to the solution and reduces its weight, and, consequently, the load on the base.

The modifiers included in the tile adhesive determine the properties that the adhesive has in its finished form.

  • Plasticizers - the solution has a high fluidity and plasticity.
  • Antifreeze additives - tile adhesive will have frost resistance, used for outdoor work.
  • Water-retaining additives - the solution will hold moisture longer and have greater strength. The concept of heat resistance of the adhesive is based on these indicators.

Cement compositions are divided into two types:

  1. thin layer adhesives;
  2. thick adhesives.

Thin-layer mixtures are used for laying on the base with differences up to 1 cm.

Thick-layer adhesives are used to level minor differences - from 1 to 3 cm. So you can not plaster the walls, but level them with tile adhesive. It consists of cement and polymer additives that increase the strength of the composition.

Two-component epoxy compounds

Epoxy adhesives consist of epoxy resin and a hardener. The two components must be mixed before use. By itself, the resin does not have the strength and the necessary fluidity, the hardener will give it the necessary strength and pressure resistance.

The advantage of the material is that epoxy adhesives have high adhesion, they stick ceramics to a wooden or metal base.

dispersion

Sold in the form of a finished paste, have a homogeneous mass and thick consistency. Must be mixed before use. It is used for both wall and floor tiles, which are laid on even concrete, plaster and plasterboard substrates.

They consist of an aqueous dispersion based on acrylic, latex or polyvinyl acetate.

Polyurethane compounds

Differ in elasticity, they stick together any two types of a surface, for example, metal and glass. Suitable for working with ceramics in difficult areas. There are one-component and two-component mixtures based on polyurethane.

They also provide additional waterproofing.

A one-component composition acquires hardness due to the influence of ambient moisture, which enters into a chemical reaction with the components of the solution.

In the second case, you need to mix the components of the solution in the correct ratio indicated in the instructions. Then the glue will be strong, elastic and resistant to temperature extremes.

note

Please note: Some polyurethane formulations expand after curing. They are not suitable for laying ceramics.

In construction, cement tile adhesives are most often used; the optimal price-performance ratio explains the popularity of the material. Cement mortars have a higher flow rate, but the low cost allows such a flow rate.

Technical characteristics of the solution during and after working with it

During operation, a high-quality tile mortar should be:

  • elastic, that is, it fits well on different surfaces;
  • have a long life, which will allow you to work with the mixture for a sufficient time after preparation;
  • with high adhesion, which will ensure reliable fixation of the cladding on the base;
  • with low fluidity, which will prevent the tiles from slipping when laying it on the walls.

After laying and setting, the mortar must be strong, resistant to compression of the cladding and shear attempts.

According to GOST, the strength of the solidified solution is measured in MPa, for universal compositions the indicator is 10 units, and for elastic mixtures and products labeled "For reliable fixation" - 15 MPa.

  1. frost-resistant;
  2. moisture resistant;
  3. heat resistant;
  4. elastic - able to withstand temperature deformations of the tile.

The technical indicators listed above depend on the type of mixture and the manufacturer.

Types of glue depending on the purpose

Ceresit brand products have proven themselves well, the manufacturer has provided a line of tile adhesives of all the types listed above.

Another popular and popular brand was Knauf. Products are characterized by low consumption, excellent adhesive properties, strength.

Consumption and drying time

The consumption of the composition is indicated on the packaging with the material. Consumption may be more or less depending on weather conditions, curvature of the base, professional skills and type of tile.

The packaging also contains similar professional terms:

  • Adjustment time - tiles can be adjusted after laying on the mortar;
  • Open working time - the time from applying the solution to the base and before setting; long working time allows you to apply glue immediately to a large area.
  • Workability time - from preparation of the solution to setting.

For urgent work, choose a material with a minimum adjustment time, but for a novice master - that's it.

Storage and preparation of cement tile adhesive

  • When buying, look at the expiration date of the material and the date of manufacture.
  • You can store tile adhesive in a dry room or outdoors in warm weather and under a canopy.

    note

    If the bags are stored in a humid environment, the powder will absorb moisture, which will impair adhesion, plasticity and other characteristics of the solution.

  • You can prepare a solution for tiles manually or with a construction mixer. Using a mixer, you can achieve a homogeneous mass without lumps and the desired consistency.
  • You can work with the solution at a temperature of +5 to +

How to prepare a mortar for tiles with your own hands

Previously, there were no specialized tile adhesives, so the solution for the tiles was prepared by hand. You can try today, if austerity is at the forefront.

The tile solution consists of several components:

  1. fine sand;
  2. cement;
  3. improvised plasticizers - PVA glue, liquid soap;
  4. the required amount of water - the water is clean, without dirt, debris, third-party objects.

The ratio of cement and sand is 1 to 3. After mixing the components, 0.5 kg of PVA or wallpaper glue is added to the finished solution. Liquid soap will serve as a plasticizer, it will give the solution fluidity and plasticity.

The finished solution should be well mixed, homogeneous and thick consistency.

Laying tiles on a homemade tile mortar is justified if you plan to clad rooms where high quality work is not required. For example, finishing garages, sheds, outbuildings. If you have all the ingredients at hand, why not make your own glue?

Porcelain tiles have a high density, so the back side of the tile does not absorb moisture well. Due to this, not all adhesives are suitable for working with porcelain stoneware, and do-it-yourself solutions are definitely excluded.

Outcome
The choice of tile adhesive depends on the type of room, type of tile and installation features. There is no universal glue that would be suitable for all occasions.

At present, it is very difficult to imagine a modern renovation without the use of dry building mixes. Adhesive mixtures for various decorative elements are most in demand, the main of which is finishing tiles. It is about mixtures for tiles that will be discussed in our article.

Historical roots

Even the Romans noticed that a mixture of lime and some volcanic materials had some adhesive properties. As such materials, they used volcanic ash, crushed bricks and hardened lava deposits. Regardless of their origin, all these elements contained various oxides, which, reacting with lime, cause a hydration process. With the advent of cement, the original adhesives were a mixture of cement and sand, in a ratio of 1:3. Later, polymeric additives were added to such a mixture, which significantly changed its properties. The amount of modifying polymer affects certain characteristics. This made it possible to diversify the range of adhesive mixtures that are used in modern construction.

Types of tile adhesive

The variety of adhesives on the market is very large. It can be a liquid tile adhesive, a paste-like substance, or a dry mix. Which tile adhesive is best will depend on the conditions of its use. There are mixtures that exclude the preliminary preparation of the base, or vice versa, requiring careful surface treatment. Some adhesives, in addition to their main purpose, perform additional tasks: they can be grout or antifungal protection. It can be quite difficult for an ordinary layman to independently determine which glue to choose for a tile. Therefore, most often, the choice of tile adhesive is provided to the foreman of the builders performing the finishing work.

Types of tile adhesive

Universal

Can be used for tiling with dimensions from 100×100 to 150×300 mm. It is the most common adhesive in construction. It is used mainly for interior decoration, where it is not necessary to solve complex design tasks, and there is no aggressive environment.

reinforced

It is used for facing works, in places with a high static or dynamic impact on the coating: the movement of equipment, people with loads, the presence of heavy furniture. The standard size of a tile can be 300X300 mm and more. A feature of this adhesive is increased adhesion to the base.

moisture resistant

It is intended for use in damp rooms, with a high concentration of water vapor in the air. This is an adhesive for ceramic tiles in the bathroom, kitchen, car wash. Moisture-resistant tile adhesive has waterproofing properties and immunity to fumes, which makes it suitable for arranging swimming pools and saunas. Products of such brands may contain antifungal additives that prevent the appearance of mold.

For transparent decorative elements

This is a white tile adhesive based on light cement. Basic adhesive for mounting transparent, smoky tiles and mosaic wall blocks.

For outdoor work

Ordinary tile adhesive at sub-zero temperatures quickly loses its qualities, cracks and does not hold the cladding. Therefore, grades were developed that are immune to difficult environmental conditions. These include a frost-resistant outdoor tile adhesive that can withstand repeated cyclic temperature changes. It is also used in unheated rooms, and for the installation of underfloor heating.

Main characteristics

The main parameters characterizing tile adhesive include:

  • Consumption of tile adhesive per 1 m2. This is an indicator indicating how much tile adhesive is needed per 1 m2 of surface. It should be noted that the rate of consumption is not always a constant value. It will depend on the degree of preparation of the finished base. The worse the preliminary work is done, the greater the consumption of the adhesive mixture;
  • Drying time for tile adhesive. Standard universal glue dries within a day. But it is recommended not to disturb the finished surface for at least another 24 hours. To date, some manufacturers are positioning stamps with drying in a few hours;
  • Slip resistant. The term that determines the likelihood of slipping facing material. The bulk of the compositions provides for slipping by no more than half a millimeter, but there are also glues, with a minimum of 0.1 mm;
  • Correction time. The length of time during which it is possible to correct the position of the cladding after gluing;
  • Shelf life of tile adhesive. The period of time during which the mixture does not lose its useful qualities and can be used for finishing work.

Before the release of finished products on the market, manufacturers conduct a test of tile adhesive, according to the results of which all characteristics are determined. In the future, they are indicated on the factory packaging, and determine how to work with tile adhesive in certain conditions, indicate what the tile adhesive consists of.

Features of the bases

Depending on the characteristics of the surfaces to be finished, they are divided into simple and complex, which determines the use of one or another brand of adhesive mixture. After all, cladding glass is much more difficult than gluing ceramic tiles to concrete. Simple reasons include:

  1. concrete;
  2. brick;
  3. cement-sand screed;
  4. cellular concrete.

All other types of surfaces are complex:

  1. glass;
  2. wood;
  3. plastic;
  4. metal;
  5. drywall.

This also includes surfaces subjected to vibration loads, prone to deformation and already tiled. The complexity is due to the adhesion index of a particular base. There are several ways to increase the adhesion of tile adhesive:

  • Mechanical. Sanding and thorough cleaning of the base from grease and debris.
  • Physical. Putty and primer surface.
  • Chemical. Additional components with high adhesive properties, for example, the addition of PVA to tile adhesive.

Popular brands

Today, Heinkel is a leader in the production of adhesives. Ceresit's most common cladding adhesive is CM 11. This is a cement-based non-shrink tile adhesive for interior use. Can be used as an adhesive for wall tiles up to 30x30 or for flooring.

CM 117 - adhesive for clinker tiles, can be used for cladding inside and outside buildings, facades, has medium elasticity.

CM 17 is a non-shrinking tile adhesive for all sizes, indoors and outdoors. Possesses high adhesion, elastic, steady against slipping. The most expensive in its line, but with the most extended scope.

CH 400 - adhesive for quartz vinyl tiles, made in paste form, can be used for carpet and textile materials.

Knauf

The second largest manufacturer of dry mixes. Knauf tile adhesive is represented by four main brands that differ in scope. Knauf fliesen tile adhesive is similar in its characteristics to CM 11, but can withstand several cycles of frost resistance. The adjustment period does not exceed 10 minutes.

Knauf flex - adhesive for natural and artificial stone, also used for gluing heat-insulating materials.

Knauf mramor - adhesive mixture for marble slabs and mosaics.

EK 3000 is a tile adhesive designed for laying small and medium-sized ceramic tiles made of natural and artificial stone. It can be used for both vertical and horizontal cladding. It can be used for underfloor heating, as well as for leveling bases with a layer of up to 5 mm. It has a relatively high adjustment time - up to 20 minutes.

Weber

They produce glue for vetonit tiles of several brands:

  • Optima is a standard interior adhesive;
  • Easy fix - for ceramic tiles and mosaics;
  • Granit fix - for natural and artificial stone;
  • Mramor is an adhesive mixture for marble.

No less popular in the construction environment is bergauf maximum tile adhesive, which has a wide range of applications: large-format ceramics, mosaics, marble and transparent panels. It is possible to lay natural stone on the floor, but wall cladding is excluded. In rooms with high humidity, it is advisable to use sopro tile adhesive. It is perfect for lining pools, loggias and balconies, and as an adhesive option for underfloor heating.

Preparation of the glue mixture

In the process of tiling the working surface with tiles, the preparation of the adhesive mixture is divided into separate batches, at the rate of 1 batch per 3-4 m2. Otherwise, excess glue may harden and lose its properties. To prepare one batch, it is necessary to fill a 20-liter construction bucket with water, about a quarter. Then, based on the consumption of material, half of the factory packaging of glue is poured there, this is 11-12 kg of dry mix. After mixing the suspension with a construction mixer, the mixture is left for 10 minutes to mature (the dry component will absorb water). If this is not done, water will be absorbed after gluing, and the tile will fall off. Depending on the consistency obtained, water or a mixture is additionally added to the container, in too thick or too liquid, respectively. To work with a comb, the average consistency of the finished mixture is suitable; for laying thick layers of glue, a thick one is needed.

How to make tile adhesive at home? It is enough to have cement, sand and PVA glue. The cement-sand mixture is made at the rate of 1:3, part cement to three parts sand. Then water is added there, with PVA diluted in it. 0.5 kg of PVA falls on a bucket of finished glue. Then all this is thoroughly mixed with a mixer. It must be remembered that tile adhesive hardens very quickly, and it must be prepared immediately before starting work.

Conclusion

Choosing a tile adhesive is necessary based on the following parameters:

  1. tile material;
  2. tile size;
  3. features of operation;
  4. type of base.

If you plan to cover a large area with tiles, then it makes sense to purchase tile adhesive in bulk. This not only saves money, but also guarantees the purchase of glue from the same batch, since experience shows that different batches of the same glue can have different qualities and characteristics. The consumption of glue is greatly influenced by the skill and experience of the tiler, the ability to apply a thin layer without losing the quality of adhesion of the material.

When buying building materials, including tile adhesive, you should never skimp on quality. Subsequent alteration, as a rule, is much more expensive.

In order to choose the best tile adhesive for the bathroom, you need to know about the types of mixtures and the features of their application. Manufacturers have taken into account most of the nuances of finishing work, so you can choose an adhesive whose properties will be optimal for the existing conditions.

Most commercially available adhesive mixtures are suitable for laying tiles in the bathroom. The best choice will be the one that will provide the highest quality adhesion to the surface of the walls and floor. The basis for laying tiles can be different:

  • brick;
  • concrete;
  • drywall;
  • foam block or gas block.

Surfaces for sticking tiles can be complex, with large height differences and unstable (wood or chipboard). In this case, a mixture with enhanced fixation is required. Bathroom tile adhesive is selected based primarily on these criteria.

Then pay attention to the type of tile to be laid. If it is porcelain stoneware, a mixture with high adhesion rates will be required. For facing underfloor heating, a heat-resistant compound is needed. For laying thin tiles or mosaics, you will need mixtures with other properties. Therefore, the choice of adhesive for tiles in the bathroom is based on several parameters:

  1. base type;
  2. type of tile;
  3. tile size;
  4. is it necessary to level the walls with glue;
  5. operating conditions of the premises;
  6. the presence or absence of additional heating.

Types of tile adhesive

Glue for laying tiles in the bathroom is of three types:

  • Based on cement.
  • Dispersion (one-component).
  • Epoxy (two-component).

cement mixtures

The most commonly used mixtures are cement-based. They are sold in powder form and require the preparation of a working composition by adding water. The main component of such compositions is Portland cement. Its share is at least 90%. The remaining 10% includes quartz sand and various additives that provide specific properties.

Cement based adhesive suitable for all types of surfaces. Moreover, it is able to even out their small defects. In the assortment of this product there are mixtures of thermo-, frost- and moisture-resistant, with a particularly strong fixation. Any of them is easy to prepare with a mixer and a drill. The advantages of this glue include its low price.

For tiles in the bathroom, compositions are suitable that have the optimal laying and leveling time for the master. When choosing a mixture, you need to take into account that a beginner and a professional have different speeds. In the first case, you need glue with a slow setting, in the second - with a fast one.

Dispersion

The composition of dispersion mixtures includes:

  1. acrylic;
  2. astringent additives;
  3. resins.

The main feature of these mixtures is that they weakly penetrate into the structure of the surface on which they are applied. Therefore, they are best used for tiling drywall, plastic, wood. Dispersion compositions are sold in a form ready for use. The advantages of one-component adhesives include:

  • high elasticity;
  • low consumption of the finished solution;
  • increased adhesion to various, including smooth and slippery surfaces.

Despite all the advantages, a mixture based on acrylic and resins is not recommended for laying floor tiles. A layer of dispersion adhesive is less resistant to weight and other loads than a cement layer.

elastic

Elastic - these are the same cement-based mixtures, but with the inclusion of special additives. This is the best choice for a beginner in decorating. Such glue is easy to prepare and apply, thanks to its mobility it allows for quite a long time to adjust the position of wall or floor tiles in any direction.

Elastic bathroom tile adhesive has all the other advantages of cement. Recommended for wall and floor cladding in new buildings, because as the building shrinks, the tile will hold well. Ideal for application to non-hygroscopic surfaces.

Epoxy

Epoxy adhesive is made from epoxy resin. It has a distinctive feature - water resistance. Due to this property, it is widely used for finishing surfaces that are in contact with water for a long time. Indispensable for the walls of swimming pools, hammams, saunas.

Mixtures of this type are classified as two-component, which determines the peculiarity of their preparation. There are three types of compositions:

  1. with mineral filler;
  2. ultrathin;
  3. fluid.

But, regardless of the type, each of the listed adhesives is waterproof.

Features of choice for different types of tiles

On the packaging, manufacturers indicate the type of tile recommended for this product. It is unwise to disregard this information, as proper application guarantees the quality and durability of the finish. Therefore, you need to know what properties glue should have for different conditions and situations.

Mixtures with increased adhesion are necessary in several cases:

  • when working with porcelain stoneware;
  • when facing complex vertical surfaces;
  • on hygroscopic bases.

Masters advise choosing moisture-resistant and high-strength cement-based mixtures for floor tiles, and elastic ones for wall tiles. Mosaic is recommended to be laid on white glue. A similar choice must be made when working with glass tiles. White glue has high adhesion and is in no way inferior to gray cement, but, unlike it, will not spoil the appearance of a translucent mosaic. Dispersion adhesive can be used instead of cement.

The choice of composition also depends on the size of the ceramics. The larger and thicker the tile, the greater the weight load the adhesive must withstand. For large-sized tiles, you should choose a reinforced fixation composition. With it, the tiles are laid in the direction from top to bottom. For lining bathrooms, moisture-resistant mixtures are always chosen.

Difficult surfaces require a ceramic tile adhesive that sets slowly and has high strength once cured. The same composition is used for laying on unstable surfaces made of drywall, wood or chipboard, as well as for gluing tiles on old tiles without dismantling them. Universal mixes are recommended for finishing works in dry rooms.

Surface area m 2
Layer thickness, mm

Bathroom adhesive consumption can be calculated in many ways. Manufacturers always indicate the amount of dry or wet mixture required to cover 1 m² of surface. But these figures are approximate. The condition of the walls or floor may require a much larger volume of the finished mixture. There are some tips from the masters to help beginners:

  1. If the height differences on the base do not exceed 3 mm, in calculating the consumption of glue, you can focus on the manufacturer's data and increase the volume obtained as a result of calculations by another 15%.
  2. When laying tiles on other, more complex surfaces, leveling of the base will be required. To do this, add the consumption per 1 m², equal to ½ the thickness of the tile used, to the number obtained in the previous step.
  3. The larger the tile, the larger the adhesive layer required. The optimal layer for tiles measuring 100x100 mm is 2 mm, 200x300 mm is 3 mm.

The manufacturer Vetonit offers two lines of adhesive mixtures: standard and improved. For laying tiles in the interior, mixtures of both directions are suitable. You can choose from a range of standard ones.

Tile adhesive is a special composition, the main purpose of which is to fasten tile products to various vertical and horizontal surfaces. It is not necessary to make a cement adhesive mortar for mounting tiles with your own hands - many specialized compounds are sold in stores that can ensure high-quality laying work.

When choosing an adhesive for ceramic tiles or for tiles in the bathroom or kitchen, you need to consider some criteria that will help you choose a good suitable adhesive composition. It is worth highlighting the following, the most important criteria:

  • Rough surface type. Tiling can be done on different surfaces: tiled, plasterboard, concrete, plastered, etc.
  • The dimensions of one tile, the total dimensions of the surface to be treated. If the tile products are large, then the adhesive must be chosen with high adhesion, because. finishing material weighs a lot, will create a strong load.
  • Place of work. For bathrooms and bathrooms, you need to choose a waterproof adhesive that can withstand the constant influence of high levels of humidity. If the cladding is done in the hallway, corridor, in the kitchen, then you can simply choose a good adhesive for mounting tiles that does not have high moisture-resistant performance.
  • Installation method. If the laying of tiles will be done by hand, it is recommended to buy adhesive mixtures that will not dry quickly, allowing the installer to correct all the flaws in the finish. When carrying out work by professionals, you can choose high-quality quick-drying mixtures.

Important! It is not recommended to use universal glue and mixtures designed to work with different materials. It is recommended to choose a specialized waterproof adhesive for tiles on the floor. These types of floor tile adhesive will last much longer than universal counterparts, and will also be able to provide better fastening of products to the floor and wall surface.

If we talk about what kind of glue you can choose for tiles, ceramic products, tiles, it is worth highlighting several types of mixtures at once. For the implementation of these works, cement, dispersion, elastic, epoxy mortars are usually used.

Cement

The basis of such floor or wall adhesives in the kitchen, in the bathroom, in the hallway, is ordinary cement. Such products are inexpensive, sold in powder form. Therefore, the dry mixture must be mixed with water before use.

When choosing a cement composition, it is necessary to view the packaging, which should be labeled: “tile adhesive”. The mixture can be thin (for perfectly leveled surfaces) or thick (for uneven surfaces).

Dispersion

When choosing a dispersion adhesive for floor tiles, you can count on a high level of adhesion of finishing materials. The composition is represented by a mixture of acrylic materials with binders and synthetic resin substances.

Therefore, it is best to choose for drywall, varnished, painted surfaces, for walls and floors with old finishes that cannot be removed. For concrete coatings, the dispersion type of adhesive is not suitable.

  • Cleanliness and order in the implementation of finishing work (when compared with cement analogues).
  • No need to prepare ready-made moisture-resistant adhesive for tiles in the kitchen or on the floor in the bathroom with your own hands.
  • Quite a long hardening, so it is possible to adjust the location of the tiles after applying the adhesive.

elastic

Flexible types of adhesive for laying tiles and ceramics are suitable for interior work and for surfaces lacking moisture absorption characteristics, for mobile structures. Elastic compounds are an excellent solution for floor coverings with "warm floors" because the applied adhesive solution will be resistant to thermal expansion and contraction.

Epoxy

You should not give preference to epoxy tile adhesive in the bathroom or in the kitchen, because. for residential premises, such compositions are not chosen. Epoxy mixtures are much more expensive than previous counterparts. It is also difficult to work with them without proper skills and experience. For example, in the process of laying on epoxy adhesive for tiles, it is necessary to observe a strict temperature regime, and when mixing the mixture, strictly follow the proportions.

Epoxy compounds are used for work in:

  • Saunas.
  • pools.
  • Baths.
  • Economic premises.

When using epoxy adhesive, the dampness of wet rooms is not important, because it has 100% water resistance. Using it, it is possible to lay tiled materials on different types of surfaces.

Consistency

It is difficult to say which adhesive for tiles in the bathroom will be better, because in some cases the adhesive composition must be chosen individually, taking into account the conditions of work and the operation of the material. Compositions sold in stores may have a different consistency:

  • Liquid. Mixtures in the form of a paste that are ready to use immediately after opening the package - there is no need for the consumer to knead and mix anything. Convenient for all those who want ready-made tile adhesive in the bathroom. The main disadvantage of such products is the high price (when compared with dry formulations). Separately, it is worth noting the compositions of "liquid nails". Such types of glue cannot be used for laying ceramic tiles in the bathroom - only for the repair and restoration of individual elements of the finish.
  • Dry. Traditional dry mixes must be mixed before use in accordance with the instructions on the package. Such products are inexpensive, suitable for laying tiles on uneven and poorly leveled surfaces.

Special properties

Tile adhesives for bathrooms have different characteristics, stick tiles in different ways, so when choosing them, you must take into account the presence of special properties. Most often you can see the following characteristics of adhesive mixtures:

  • Quick dry. Such compositions, as the name implies, dry quickly enough - the operation of the laid material is available within 2-3 hours after completion of work. Such tile adhesive is waterproof, frost-resistant, but can only be used for finishing work on simple, even, fixed surfaces. Quick-drying formulations are presented in the form of dry mixes. Pay attention to the following brands: Ivsil Express, Knauf Schnell Kleber.
  • Frost resistant. This type of tile adhesive for bathrooms and kitchens is sold as a dry formulation, so it is easy to store and transport. 100% retains its working properties at low positive and negative temperatures. Suitable for use in country houses and summer residences. The most popular brands include: Ceresit Bautechnik, Kreisel MULTI 102, Knauf HP Start.

  • Heat resistant. An excellent option for tile adhesive in the bathroom, as well as for finishing surfaces that will heat up during operation (warm floors, fireplaces, stoves, etc.). The applied composition is able to withstand high operating temperatures - up to 110-120 ° C. At the top of the rating of heat-resistant tile adhesive are the brands: Webervetonit RF, Ceresit CM 17, IVSIL EXPRESS, FEROZIT-108.

  • Acid resistant. Not everyone knows how to choose an adhesive for laying tiles that will be used in an aggressive environment. In this case, preference should be given to acid-resistant adhesives, which are used if the material is exposed to various chemicals.
  • Waterproof. A tile adhesive is said to be waterproof if it is waterproof and inert to liquids. Such adhesive compositions are the best option for finishing work in bathrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, hallways, as well as in any other rooms and places where high humidity and liquid affect tile products. Trademarks deserve special attention: Ceresit CM 17, Pobedit Pool TM-16. If we talk about which tile adhesive will be better for the bathroom, then it is worth highlighting the waterproof compounds. Their only drawback is the high price (when compared with conventional liquid and dry mixes for laying tiles and ceramics).

  • Universal. The choice of universal tile adhesive in the bathroom is a rather controversial decision. This is a ready-made bathroom tile adhesive that has very limited performance. For example, it cannot be used in rooms with high humidity, porcelain stoneware products cannot be laid on it, and it cannot be used if the room has underfloor heating. Universal adhesive is selected if it is intended to be used in average operating conditions.

How to calculate glue consumption?

In the store you can find different shades of tile adhesive: white, gray, transparent, dark, etc. Color does not affect the consumption of the adhesive composition. To find out the approximate consumption of the mixture, it is necessary to inspect the packaging, although the manufacturer's instructions give very average figures.

The following factors influence the total consumption of finished tile adhesive in the bathroom:

  1. A type of adhesive. Different types of glue have different consumption. For example, cement compositions that must be diluted with water are consumed in an amount of 1.4 to 2 kg per m 2. Epoxy mixtures have a much lower consumption, while dispersion ones are usually higher.
  2. Features of the laid tiles. If you glue porcelain tiles, then the consumption of glue will be minimal. When working with glazed products, it will increase, and when using handmade tiles, it will be maximum at all. Therefore, packs and packages with porcelain tile adhesive are usually smaller in size and volume.
  3. Surface type. If the surface is perfectly flat, then the glued tile will hold on to a minimum amount of glue. If there are defects and irregularities on the surface that need to be hidden, then the consumption of the adhesive composition can increase by 2-3 times.
  4. temperature conditions. When carrying out finishing work in optimal temperature conditions (from +15 to +23 degrees), the consumption of tile adhesive composition will be minimal. If moisture evaporates rapidly from the finished solution at a high temperature, then the consumption will increase proportionally.
  5. The technology of work and the skills of the stacker. If the finishing work is carried out by professionals, then the expense will be insignificant - within the normal range. If you do the work yourself, the cost will increase.

Types of adhesive for tiles (17 photos)

The choice of glue for tiles in our time is not an easy task. From the variety of proposals, just eyes run wide, and consultants vying with each other praise their product and argue the shortcomings of competitive brands. Of course, you can entrust your choice to professional builders, but what if the tile work is done on your own, and the result of the cladding depends on the quality of the glue.

Therefore, we will figure out how to glue ceramic tiles in the kitchen, tiles in the bathroom, and what to put paving tiles on. The approach must be correct and meet the criteria: reliable, inexpensive and efficient.

It is impossible to say unequivocally which tile adhesive is better. This is due to many factors. But, you can consider each of them and choose the best option for yourself - it is quite realistic.

Tile adhesive can be classified according to several criteria, it is they who give it functions that in one case are key, and in the other they do not play any role. But decisive for the correct choice of glue are:

1. Purpose or scope

It is these factors that determine the mode of operation of the tile.

Exterior finish

For outdoor cladding, tile adhesive for outdoor use is intended. After all, the environment for using the adhesive itself already indicates that the operating conditions are more aggressive. There is a wide range of temperature fluctuations, and its sharp changes, high humidity, exposure to wind and ultraviolet radiation. Yes, and mechanical damage to the outside of the building occur more often and have more serious consequences. Therefore, for exterior decoration, it is necessary to use special types of glue that provide greater adhesion to the surface and resistance to the listed factors.

In addition, the place of application of the adhesive outside the building can leave its mark on the choice. So, for example, glue for a porch should be water-repellent, for a plinth - high fixation and also hydrophobic (water-repellent). Tile adhesive, i.e. , is not available on the market, due to the fact that it is usually laid on a cement-sand cushion with a rammer and filled with cement along the seam. But, if you need on a concrete surface, you can use any adhesive for outdoor use, for example, Unix 2000.

Separately, it should be noted, glue for laying tiles in such rooms as a balcony, loggia, closed veranda. Even in a glazed room, the temperature will be lower than in the rest of the apartment / house. So you need to use frost and moisture resistant adhesives.

Interior decoration

In this case, the mode of operation of the tile is more gentle, which means that any glue will do. An exception in a residential building is such a room as a bathroom. Tile adhesive for the bathroom is characterized by increased resistance to moisture and significant elasticity. At the same time, the masters advise not only to use special adhesives, but to separate them according to the scope of application. So, for the floor you need glue, which is characterized by increased elasticity, imparted to it by a plasticizer. However, wall tiles laid on such an adhesive will “float”. For walls, compositions that provide increased fixation are suitable, i.e. those that withstand significant tensile loads.

Tips. Using a universal tile adhesive in the bathroom, you need to seal the seams between the tiles with a special waterproof grout. Fungicidal tile adhesive is capable of preventing the appearance of mold and fungus.

2. Tile Features

Tile type

We are talking about the material from which the tile is made.

For example, for facing with mosaics or natural light stone, white cement-based adhesives should be preferred. Otherwise, it will be difficult to give the surface a well-groomed appearance.

There is a special glue for fixing porcelain stoneware. Its use is dictated by the peculiarity of this type of tile. It is characterized by high density, low water absorption, low adhesion. Since porcelain stoneware does not absorb glue, and at the same time has a significant weight, special compounds must be used to fix it. These include Werker, Hercules, Litoflex K 80 porcelain tile adhesive or Eunice Plus tile adhesive. The general requirement for adhesives in this case is that it must be reinforced.

Tile sizes

Professionals know that in order to properly fix the tile, the thickness of the applied mortar must be equal to the thickness of the tile itself. Accordingly, the size of the tile plays an important role in the choice. But, more important than the thickness, are the geometric dimensions. This is due to the fact that the larger the tile, the more weight it has, which means that the greater the fixing ability of the selected adhesive should be.

Thus, tiles with dimensions from 100x100 to 300x300 mm will be completely held by universal glue. But for larger samples, reinforced tile adhesive is needed. Of course, these requirements are important when facing walls. For floor tiles, this requirement is not essential.

3. The base on which the tiles will be glued

According to their characteristics, all bases are usually divided into two types:

  • simple bases. Their difference is that they are resistant to deformation. Concrete, brick walls, cement screeds are considered simple bases;
  • complex bases. Subject to deformation, vibration, not resistant to increased loads. These include: bases made of wood, drywall, metal, plastic, glass.

In addition to the specified, the temperature range of the base, the load on the tile, and the level of humidity are taken into account.

The three parameters discussed above determine the specific type of adhesive solution.

4. The composition of the tile adhesive

In terms of composition, adhesive mixtures do not differ in significant diversity and consist of only three positions:

Cement based tile adhesive

Tile cement adhesive refers to dry solutions. The main component in such compositions is cement, the share of which is up to 90%. The remaining 10% is sand and modifying additives, which allows us to speak about the versatility of the composition and its low cost.

The cement adhesive is easy to work with, diluted 3:1 with water and allows the tiles to be fixed to the concrete base. At the same time, the use of cement-based adhesives makes it possible to increase the reliability of fastening. It can also be used as a leveling tile adhesive. However, it is suitable for leveling minor surface defects;

Dispersion tile adhesive

It is a pasty composition, which gives such advantages in work as saving time for cooking, unchanged composition, lack of dust. The time interval for using the adhesive is at least 40 minutes, which gives room for maneuvering when facing. It consists of organic binders, mineral fillers and special additives (water-acrylic).

Dispersion tile adhesive is designed for fixing ceramics: mosaics, clinker tiles, glazed tiles, majolica or natural stone. It is ideal for use on difficult substrates. Due to its composition, it will ensure reliable gluing of tiles even on an old tile surface. An exception in the scope of application is the varnished surfaces of MDF or fiberboard. In addition, it can only be used for interior work.

Polyurethane Tile Adhesive

Refers to one-component solutions and is highly elastic. Typically, polyurethane tile adhesive is used when facing complex surfaces.

Epoxy tile adhesive

Its base is epoxy resin. Refers to two-component solutions that are mixed before use. Clay consists of three subspecies:

  • fluid;
  • with ultra-thin filler;
  • with mineral filler.

Regardless of the type, the adhesive is available as a ready-made mixture. Suitable for use on any grounds. Due to its 100% water resistance, the adhesive is ideal for swimming pools, laundries, bathrooms. Ceresit CU 22 has proven itself well.

Is it possible to level the floor, walls, ceiling with tile adhesive?

To level minor irregularities, any adhesive composition can be used. For example, with a wall curvature of 10 mm, Mira 3100 unifix (thin-layer adhesive) is suitable if the difference exceeds 10 mm. Kreisel maxi-multi 107 is recommended. Another thing is how cost-effective it is to perform such work using glue.

5. Tile adhesive consistency

From this position, there are:

Liquid tile adhesive

These most often include pasty formulations, the advantage of which is that the mixture is already ready for use, saving time for mixing. The disadvantage is the high price.

A separate type of liquid adhesives is liquid nails. Well suited for gluing small parts, as well as for gluing dropped or damaged tiles. Liquid nails can only be mounted in a place protected from water.

Dry tile adhesive

Diluted with water in the proportion specified by the manufacturer. The popularity of this type of composition was ensured by low price, reliable adhesion, the ability to lay on a surface with significant curvature, ease of transportation, and ease of dismantling.

6. Special properties

Adhesives such as:

Fast drying tile adhesive

Normal operation of the lined surface is allowed after 3-4 hours after completion of work. At the same time, such glue is frost-resistant and can be used in rooms with high humidity. Used to fix tiles on simple surfaces. It is worth noting that such glue is sold only in dry mixes, otherwise its life would be very short. KNAUF SCHNELLKLEBER (Knauf Schnelkleber) and IVSIL EXPRESS have proven themselves well.

Heat resistant tile adhesive (heat resistant)

Designed for use on heated surfaces: stoves, fireplaces, heated floors. A prerequisite for application is the ability to withstand high (up to 100 ° C) temperatures. Among the masters, such brands as Ceresit CM 17, FEROZIT-108, Weber vetonit RF, IVSIL EXPRESS are popular.

Note. Please note that not all heat-resistant tile adhesives are suitable for use on underfloor heating, due to the different elasticity coefficients of the adhesive and different types of underfloor heating. When choosing glue, consult additionally.

Frost resistant tile adhesive

It is also sold in the form of dry mixes, which allows it to be stored for quite a long time until the moment of use. Allows you to lay tiles on simple substrates. It is worth noting that you need to work with glue quite quickly, because. it loses its plasticity within 1.5-2 hours. Ceresit Bautechnik, Knauf HP Start, Kreisel MULTI 102 are popular among consumers.

Acid resistant tile adhesive

A specific subspecies of adhesive solutions is intended for use in an aggressive environment. For example, where there are external chemical irritants: in a dairy, in a brewery, in a laboratory. Its feature is the ability to fix tiles on a wet base, high hardening speed, no smell and no harmful impurities. Such glue is Boton TK 150, Glue 88-NP.

Waterproof tile adhesive

Designed for use in the bathroom, on the porch, on the floor of an open veranda or terrace. Finishing pools or fountains is also unthinkable without the use of special glue. The modifier added to the cement-sand composition of the adhesive gives it hydrophobic properties. At the same time, the adhesive has a high fixation. Sales leaders in this category are Ceresit CM 17, Pobedit Pool TM-16.

Note. Moisture-resistant tile adhesive is quite expensive, so for home repairs, masters advise using ordinary glue and moisture-resistant grout for joints.

Universal tile adhesive

Suitable for fixing most types of tiles on various surfaces. However, the universality of glue is a rather relative concept. For example, it is not applicable to porcelain stoneware, and cannot be used outdoors, in rooms with high humidity, or on warm floors. It got its name due to the fact that it was designed for average operating conditions, which in real life happens quite rarely.

7. According to the international standard DIN EN 12004

Tile adhesive, like most building materials, is produced in accordance with domestic and international building standards (norms). One of these is the German standard DIN EN 12004. In accordance with it, there are:

C1 and C2 - cement adhesives. The main parameters for adhesives of this class are presented in the table.

If a mixture of this class contains additional modifying additives, then prefixes (index) T, E, F are added to the designation of class C1 or C2. The interpretation of the indices is presented in the table.

  • D1 and D2 - polymer adhesives;
  • R1 and R2 are polyurethane and epoxy adhesives.

The numbers 1 and 2 in the marking will indicate that the glue is basic (index 1) or reinforced (index 2).

The same standard distinguishes several classes of tile adhesive, depending on the elasticity of the composition:

  • S1 - elastic tile adhesive, providing a deflection of the adhesive solution in the hardened state of more than 2.5 mm;
  • S2 - exceeds 5 mm.

The scheme for measuring the deflection with a standard load is shown in the figure.

In German practice, adhesives with increased elasticity are marked with a special sign.

The material was prepared for the site www.site

The elasticity of the adhesive is important when laying tiles on the floor. After all, it accounts for significant constant loads. In addition, it is desirable to use elastic compositions on complex surfaces, in houses that have not yet shrunk, on heated floors, when tiling large sizes.

8. By manufacturer/brand/company

Manufacturers invest heavily to promote their brands. This allows them to more successfully bring new products to market, as well as win and retain consumer loyalty.

Among the well-known brands in the domestic market are:

Eunice (Unis)

Eunice tile adhesive in the full range is shown in the photo.

Eunice tile adhesive is a product of a domestic manufacturer, which is in demand among craftsmen due to its characteristics and low cost.

Comparative characteristics of the main types of glue are presented in the table

Knauf

Knauf tile adhesive is a guarantee of German quality. Despite the fact that this manufacturer produces a significant range of products, adhesive solutions are represented by several types, among which are:

Separately, it should be noted the Knauf-Fliesen tile adhesive (the old name is Fliesenkleber), which, thanks to special modifiers, has specific properties and is intended for tiling a specific type.

Knauf-Flex tile adhesive (the old name flexeber) has won its consumer due to the increased elasticity of the adhesive composition.

Ceresit (Ceresit)

Ceresit tile adhesive is available on the market in a wide range, which allows the user to choose the type that is suitable for solving a specific task.

Tile adhesive Ceresit (Ceresit) is the most famous of the brands in the domestic market.

Comparative characteristics of all types of glue Osnovit are presented in the table.

Glue tiled Prospectors (Starateli)

Another brand represented by a domestic manufacturer. Control of production at all stages allows us to guarantee the excellent quality of the products.

It is presented on the market with adhesive compositions of two classes: standard and improved.

Drinking adhesive Weber Vetonit does not contain asbestos fibers, so it is recommended to use it in rooms intended for cooking. Comparative characteristics of some species are presented in the table.

Tile adhesive Volma

Another worthy trademark of a Russian manufacturer, presented in a wide range.

As you can see, it is impossible to give an unambiguous answer to the question of which tile adhesive is better. We have described the selection criteria in this article, and the final choice can be made by reading the characteristics of the composition. At the same time, comparing adhesives with each other, many are wondering how to choose from different solutions that seem to be similar in composition.

What else to take into account when choosing a tile adhesive:

  • open work time, i.e. the period during which the adhesive is suitable for use;
  • fluidity, i.e. the ability of the adhesive solution to spread over the surface of the tile;
  • glue consumption per 1 sq.m.
