In a small bathroom, the choice of furniture and sanitary ware is already limited, so should you limit yourself when choosing ceramics? In any case, manufacturers are doing everything to prevent this from happening: the range of sizes is huge, from mosaics and small-format tiles to the classic 10x10 cm, 15x15 cm, large-format and almost one meter. Add to this different shapes - hexagons, octagons, arabesques, bricks and squares. Also, of course, geometry, reliefs, not to mention color proposals. So no, you don't have to limit yourself. But what kind of tile increases the space is worth understanding.

1. Light really expands

There are many theories on color, but everyone agrees that light shades give more space, while dark ones conceal and muffle. Moreover, each color can be represented in light and dark colors. When choosing a tone within a color, choose as light as possible - even if it's red, blue, purple or yellow.

2. Contrasts

The bet on light does not exclude dark accents. Contrasts in a small bathroom are even necessary: when there is a visual story in the room, it seems larger. You can make light walls, but, for example, a dark ceiling - then the ceiling stretches and lengthens. The dark floor will also not weigh down the space. You can even highlight a small niche or a separate wall with dark colors. If at the same time the main area of \u200b\u200bthe walls is decorated in light shades, the space of a small bathroom will seem light and more spacious.

3. Combinations of colors, formats and sizes

A two-tone bathroom is not the only option. In addition, such a bathroom runs the risk of being too boring. Many different colors and formats for 3-4 sq.m. you don’t need to use the bathroom, but you shouldn’t completely avoid them either.

When combining different tile formats, one rule applies: the tiles on the floor should be slightly larger than the wall tiles or an equivalent size. Except maybe the mosaic floor. Often, designers combine a wild boar on the wall with metlakh tiles on the floor. The difference in formats gives dynamics to the space, and Winckelmans metlakh tiles are offered as ready-made “carpets” and make the bathroom space more comfortable.

If you want to add more color or patterns, you can do it point by point. A small bathroom will benefit from different accents. Give the active color or pattern a separate wall, part of the wall or floor - so the space does not become overloaded and acquires character.

4. Tile size

Tiles that increase the space in the bathroom should be of medium size, no more than 15x15 cm. Too large formats in a small bathroom are cramped, it becomes noticeable. And the mosaic focuses on the tile joints and hits a small space. If you still want a mosaic - choose a light one, its contrast with dark tile joints can become the very accent that creates character in space.

5 secrets to visually increase the space in the bathroom

Is your bathroom with its very modest footage a source of constant discontent and bad mood? Are you sure there's nothing you can do about it? Nothing like this! Properly selected design of a small bathroom, if desired, will help to visually expand the space, if you apply your creativity and imagination. Try transforming a tiny room commonly referred to as "amenities" into a truly comfortable space. And to help you in this exciting but difficult business, we will share 5 secrets of success.

The role of the color scheme in the design of a small bathroom

Even non-designers know that color plays an important role in the visual perception of a room. It depends on whether your room will look small or spacious. Do you have a task to visually expand the bathroom? Then exclude dark colors immediately, otherwise you will get a cramped closet. Your allies are light colors. Walls, ceiling, even the floor are best decorated in neutral colors. The white tone is alarming (would such a bathroom look too strict, even sterile?). Choose other options: beige, pale blue, sand, milky, light green. Let's share a secret - doors and furniture to match the walls also visually increase the volume. And as for the white color, we note that modern tiles come with an interesting corrugated pattern that enlivens the room well.

The design of a small bathroom also involves the use of several colors in the design: combine white with other tones, but not contrasting, but light. For example, one color for the floor, another for the walls and ceiling (light green and milky, cream and white).

You can lay out horizontal colored stripes along three walls in order to visually expand the room. And if you want to visually increase the height of the bathroom - use vertical stripes. You should not use large panels in the design of a small bathroom - this will reduce the space. But ornaments made of light-colored tiles are quite appropriate and can decorate the room.

What should be the light in the design of a small bathroom

The main secret is simple - there should be a lot of light! In addition to central lighting, take care of local lighting. No darkened corners, otherwise the effect of spaciousness in the bathroom cannot be achieved! Experts advise giving preference to "warm" light, reminiscent of sunlight. Then even your own reflection in the mirror will please you more than with “cold” (white or bluish) lighting.

Illumination above the washbasin is required, it is not bad to place a light source above the bath. Neon lamps or LEDs are suitable for this. Traditional overhead lighting is mounted on the ceiling, spotlights will be relevant here. Properly placing them on the ceiling, you can manually change the direction of the light rays in the right direction. But lighting the bathroom from below may seem to some as an exotic idea and unacceptable at first glance. But, according to some designers, it is quite piquant and quite appropriate in small spaces.

The magic power of mirrors - expand the space

The design of a small bathroom cannot be considered successful if you do not use mirrors - a truly magical means of visually expanding the area. Everyone hangs a mirror over the sink, but you can, and even need to, decorate the walls in this way (the effect of depth is created). But do not place the mirrors opposite each other.

Let's reveal one more design secret - a full-wall mirror will turn your small bathroom into a spacious room, in any case, it will give such a visual effect. Do not forget that the illumination of large mirror surfaces is required (for example, with wall spotlights).

There is another original proposal: a mirrored ceiling.

It will also visually expand the space, especially in combination with a mirror wall. By the way, such a ceiling is not at all pieces of glass, but a ceiling covering with a glossy surface. It can be a polymer film or aluminum panels treated to create a reflection effect. Mirror cabinets will complement the visual effect of space.

Small bathroom furnishing secrets

You will have to work hard on the selection of furniture for your small bathroom. The main rule - for a small bathroom, choose compact items. Built-in cabinets, hanging plumbing and corner shelves, especially transparent ones, free up space. Another interesting solution is niches in the walls, finished with tiles. This is a great place to store various hygiene items.

Instead of a cabinet, you can choose an elegant dressing table, in which a sink is mounted. It has drawers where you store all sorts of things, and looks neater and more compact.

Small bathrooms are not uncommon even in spacious apartments. Guest bathrooms have a modest area, not to mention the bathrooms in the houses of the Soviet period of construction. Therefore, most citizens are forced to think: how to make the bathroom seem more spacious, bright and comfortable? Let's take a look at some of the solutions to this pressing problem.

Use modern plumbing

Modern plumbing is designed not only for palaces. The developments of many designers are aimed at saving precious square meters in a limited space.

In a small bathroom, a shower will look more appropriate than a bathtub. If possible, it is better to abandon the bulky ready-made shower cabin, and install a tray and supplement it with light folding partitions.

Try to make the most of corner models of furniture and plumbing: corner showers with special folding walls, sinks, etc. If you decide to buy a full-fledged bath, take a closer look at the asymmetrical corner models.

The toilet bowl with the installation not only takes up less space, but also visually looks lighter due to the lack of a leg.

Think carefully about storage

The biggest enemy of any small space is clutter. Carefully consider storage locations in the bathroom so that bubbles, jars and boxes placed on horizontal surfaces do not create a feeling of clutter. Shelves for towels under the sink and bathtub, a narrow basket for dirty laundry in the corner, hanging corner shelves for shampoos, pencil cases - you can always show your imagination and evenly distribute items so that each thing has its own strictly defined place.

Choose your furniture wisely

Remember that light, glossy surfaces of furniture fronts, as well as transparent glass, are best suited for small spaces. Try to use more hanging structures (from a toilet with an installation to a dressing table without legs) - they look more airy without visually cluttering up the space.

Choose a light finish

Light shades of cold tones visually expand the space.

Avoid bright contrasts, large ornaments, and double tiles separated by a border - all of these options are not suitable for cramped spaces. Remember about an interesting feature of geometric ornaments: horizontal stripes visually increase the width of the room, vertical ones raise the ceilings. Feel free to use stripes in bathroom decor, at least as a decor for one accent wall.

Consider bathroom lighting

The lighting in the bathroom should be moderately bright and uniform, because there are usually no sources of natural light in it. Due to the lack of light, the room looks more cramped and oppressive than it really is.

How to get rid of the feeling of tightness in a small bathroom? We have prepared five practical tips for you, using which you will love your "baby" and make it visually larger.

One of the most poignant questions that owners of small apartments have is how to expand the space. And this is especially true for bathrooms, where you often still need to fit a washing machine, a laundry basket, and various household trifles. That is why we pay so much attention to such a “hot” issue and do not get tired of talking about the secrets that will help you enlarge the bathroom.

Compact plumbing

If you are planning to do repairs from scratch, then immediately think about how the bathroom should look like. In most Khrushchevs, a good part of this room is occupied by a bath, removing which, you will noticeably add free space. Of course, this is a radical solution, but quite practical. Instead, you can install a corner shower or shower tray, which, by the way, takes up even less space.

The compact corner washbasin is an alternative to the bulky rectangular washbasin. And if you choose the option with a small cabinet, then the issue of storing hygiene items will be immediately resolved.

lucky illusion

So, when you were able to free part of the room from bulky plumbing, you need to move on to visual tricks, that is, expand the space due to color, patterns, finishing materials. Now you become a real magician, whose task is to present even the simplest illusion so that they believe in it at first sight. Here are some tricks you can use to do this:

  • Let a lot has been written about this, but we will repeat once again: the main “friend” of small spaces is light colors. If you really like chocolate or bright shades, then use them as accents.
  • Small tiles are ready to transform your "baby". There is even such an unspoken rule: the smaller the tile, the larger the room seems, but the large tile is able to visually “eat up the space”.
  • A mirror in such a bathroom is a must. Large size preferred. There is no way to hang a mirror of impressive size? Go for the trick, for example, use open mirrored shelves or lay out part of the walls with mirrored tiles.
  • Vertical and horizontal stripes - help! Vertical stripes create a great illusion, elevate ceilings visually and make bathroom interiors interesting. Horizontal stripes expand the visual boundaries of the space, but at the same time they are suitable for rooms with high ceilings, as they “lower” them a little.

Perfect Order

Whatever the size of the bathroom, but if there is no order in it, it will always seem smaller than it actually is. Therefore, use all the secret places to hide the maximum number of vials, jars and other hygiene items. Places under the sink and under the bathtub are suitable for the role of hiding places, if you decide to leave it.

Hanging corner cabinets can be good helpers. It is desirable - with mirrored or glossy doors so that light is reflected from them (thus also increasing the space). Yes, many people recommend open shelves in small bathrooms, but if you store very personal hygiene items here, then you will not want to flaunt them.

Our opinion:

Make sure that a lot of bottles of gels and shampoos do not accumulate in the bathroom, constantly audit, as even the most beautiful, stylish and expensive repairs can be ruined by mess.

Focus - on the floor

It is equally important to choose the right flooring color. Often, for visual expansion, it is decorated in the same shade as the walls. This creates the integrity of the space, but it is better to dilute such an interior with a rug, towels and accessories of a different color. This will help to get away from boredom and diversify the picture, and if you use bright cheerful colors, then give an optimistic touch to the interior.

It is possible that the floor in the bathroom will echo in pattern, color or style with the floor of the previous room, for example, a corridor. This technique will create the illusion of unifying spaces and will affect not only the visual, but also the psychological level.

large drawings

The ideal option for a small bathroom is a minimalist style, where tiles or wallpaper are without drawings and patterns. Are you afraid to make the space boring? Use a mosaic, not everywhere, but in small patches. Choose saturated shades for it to dilute the monotony of light walls.

Do you stick to the classics and cannot live without traditional tiles or wallpaper with patterns? Then do not give preference to large drawings, remember, they visually “eat up” precious space. The same applies not only to the walls, but also to the floor.

Our opinion:

Floor tiles should only be with a matte, non-slip surface, otherwise you may get injured on a glossy tile. Better yet, put one or more anti-slip rugs in the bathroom that will save you from injury and make the room more comfortable.

In the bathroom, just like in the bedroom, we spend a lot of time every day, and, of course, we want our stay to be as comfortable as possible. Alas, Russian layouts most often give us bathrooms ranging from three to six m2. The situation is a little more rosy in modern homes, however, we are still desperately trying to use the cherished squares to the maximum. Today Kvartblog will tell you about five tricks that can visually expand the bathroom a little, if the actual increase is impossible.

More light

The dream of most is to have a spacious bathroom with a window through which natural daylight will pour in. Alas, such luxury is available most often only in private country houses. In apartments, we rely on competent artificial lighting. To make the bathroom seem larger, the light should evenly flood the entire space, and not shine exclusively on the mirror or from above. The principle that lighting needs to be done at different levels also works here: ceiling lights need to be combined with sconces, then a room flooded with light will seem more spacious.

Notice how the niches are highlighted in the photo below.

Color matters

Light walls and floors are almost an axiom for small bathrooms. Pay attention to Scandinavian apartments, which are approximately equal in area to Russian ones: the Swedes exploit the color of snow with unprecedented zeal, diluting it with bright accents in the form of colored towels, bath curtains and posters on the door.

A well-known fact: dark walls cause an oppressive feeling even in spacious areas, to say nothing of small rooms. In addition to what has been said: on a dark tile, drops of water are especially visible, which harden and leave streaks.

The optimal color scheme for the bathroom: a light base (white, beige, pastel) and contrasting accents, perhaps one accent wall or colored cabinets.

Small space - small tiles

The size of a tile and how it is placed is just as important as its color. It’s worth remembering right away that the smaller the space, the smaller the tile should be. Of course, laying it out is more troublesome, but small and mosaic tiles can create a sense of perspective on the wall. And too large tiles will give guests the illusion that the wall is so small that only 10 tiles fit on it. By the way, tiles with a small repeating pattern also work to increase space, as two designers we visited proved to us. Alena Shtark designed her bathroom in Moroccan style, and Masha Kolesnikova in Arabic.

Through the Looking Glass

Mirrors visually increase the space in any room, and in a small bathroom it’s a sin not to use this effect. You should not be limited to a small mirror above the sink. Hang a mirror up to the ceiling, as Anya did in her odnushka on Dubrovka, or choose cabinets with a mirror surface (you will have organized storage and additional space for self-admiration). There is only one minus: mirrors need constant care. In the bathroom, they will definitely not be able to escape from accidental splashes, so you will have to wipe the mirrors more often than in other rooms.

Less e things in plain sight: hidden storage

In small spaces, you can not let the room become overgrown with too many things. Of course, the bathroom has a lot of things that we use every day: toothbrushes, creams (for girls, they can be in the dozens: from face creams to highly specialized jars for dry skin on the elbows or something else), towels and so on. We advise you to try not to litter the open spaces at the sink, but to group things as much as possible and put them away in hidden cabinets. Minimalism will create the illusion of a large and uncluttered space.
