Pagan "deities" are demons Pagan "deities" are demons

What does the Orthodox Church say about runes? Heard someone say like they are banned, if so why? I recently found a site on the Internet about Scandinavian paganism (Vikings, Odin, etc.), there I found information on how to make runes from wood, it seemed interesting - I did it. Do they carry any energy of protection or something good? What can you say about runes? Is it the culture of the past or something bad, contrary to religion?

Nizhny Novgorod

Dear Michael, you yourself answer your own question, characterizing the runes as an attribute of Scandinavian paganism. If you are an Orthodox Christian, then you should be well aware of the attitude of the Church towards paganism, which was determined long before the birth of Christ. For example, in the 95th Psalm of the holy King David it is said unambiguously: “... all gods are the tongue of demons: the Lord created the heavens” (“all the gods of the Gentiles are demons; the Lord created the heavens”) (Ps. 95: 5). And in the 96th psalm: “Let all who bow down to idols, boasting about their idols, be put to shame” (Ps. 96: 7). In other words, if someone worships some man-made object as a container of some “energy”, then there is absolutely nothing to boast and be proud of, this is a shameful occupation.

There is One God, the Creator of all things, visible and invisible, heaven and earth. The same spiritual entities that are politically correct called "gods" of the pagans are none other than demons, the worst enemies of mankind, who can only wish us death. And if the runes really contain some kind of energy, then here is the answer to the question about the nature of this energy. I leave you to think for yourself about the consequences of its impact on a person.

Of course, what has been said in no way excludes the possibility of studying the Scandinavian runes for purely educational purposes, as a cultural monument of pre-Christian antiquity. It is not worth it only in the process of such research to succumb to the temptation to experience the impact of the “energy” that any object can carry in itself, if only it materializes, unfortunately, the frivolous hope that spiritually imprudent people often have in the so-called pagan “gods”.

The insignificant essence of paganism is very strongly reflected in the life of Saints Cyprian and Justina. These saints are true (not fictional) historical characters whose life events are preserved for our (and future) times. Below I give the "essence of the topic" ...

===start===
In the 3rd century after the Nativity of Christ, a famous philosopher and magician Cyprian, originally from the city of Carthage. His parents were pagans. They dedicated Cyprian to the service of Apollo.

From the age of seven, Cyprian studied with sorcerers. At the age of nine, his parents sent him to prepare for a priestly position on Mount Olympus. The pagans considered Olympus the home of the gods. There were numerous idols, and demons dwelt in them.

On Olympus, Cyprian was taught various types of witchcraft. He knew the names of all the unclean spirits and the form in which they appear. With the help of demons, Cyprian could change the properties of the air, call for thunder, rain or snow, harm gardens, fields and vineyards, and bring diseases to people. Cyprian saw numerous hordes of demons, led by the prince of darkness himself. Some of the unclean spirits served their master, others were sent into the world to corrupt people and to cause them other harm.

He called various ghosts and apparitions and talked to them. Cyprian also saw those demons who took on the forms of pagan gods and goddesses.

Cyprian, when serving unclean spirits, was in the strictest forty-day fast. Only once, after sunset, did he eat some oak acorns.

At the age of fifteen, Cyprian listened to the lessons seven most famous pagan priests. After - he went to collect pagan learning around the world. Cyprian, in addition to his other skills, learned to call the dead from the graves and make them speak. At the age of 20, Cyprian studies in the Egyptian capital of Memphis. At the age of 30, he mastered astrology under the guidance of Babylonian priests.

Cyprian returned to Antioch and served idols there. Satan appeared to him again. The prince of demons was merciful to the magician, because he often made sacrifices to him. Cyprian said: "He promised me to make me a prince, after my departure from the body, and during my earthly life - to help me in everything; at the same time he gave me a regiment of demons to serve. When I left, he turned to me with the words: " take heart, zealous Cyprian, stand up and accompany me - and let all the demonic elders marvel at you. "Many evil spirits of various degrees meekly stood at his throne. And I, like them, gave all of myself to him, obeying his every command."

While living in Antioch, Cyprian did a lot of harm to people. Some he seduced with false pagan teachings, others he seduced with magical miracles. He prepared poisons and ruined human lives by sorcery. As a sacrifice to demons, he slaughtered young men and women. The pagans revered Cyprian as the chief priest and great sage. They turned to Cyprian with their needs, and he assisted them - in anger, enmity, revenge, envy, and in all other vicious feelings.

At that time in Antioch there lived a girl named Justina. Her father was a pagan priest.

And then, one day, Justina was sitting at the window in her house. Passing by was a deacon named Prailius. He told Justina about Christ - His Nativity, Crucifixion and Resurrection. This sermon fell on good ground. Justina began to go to church. Listening to the Word of God, she became stronger in the faith of Christ, and then she convinced both her mother Cleodonia and the aged father Edesia. Aedesius himself had long been thinking about the fact that idols, having neither soul nor breath, and created by human hands, cannot be gods.

One night, Edesius had a dream: a great host of luminous Angels, and in the midst of them - Christ. Christ said to Edesia:

Come to Me and I will give you the Kingdom of Heaven.

The next day, Aedesius and his wife and daughter went to Bishop Optatus. They asked to be taught the faith of Christ and to perform Holy Baptism. Aedesius spoke about the vision. The bishop rejoiced, instructed the whole family in the rules of faith, baptized and communed the Holy Mysteries of Christ. When Aedesius was strengthened in faith, the bishop appointed him to the presbyters. Aedesius lived in the faith for a year and a half, and quietly rested.

Justina loved Christ more than anything earthly. And the devil began to harm Justina, seeing her virtuous life.

Aglaid, the son of rich and noble parents, saw Justina when she was going to church. Aglaid was captivated by her beauty, and the devil put impure intentions into the heart of the young man. Aglaid began to meet Justina everywhere and spoke flattering speeches to her. But the girl avoided him, and did not even talk. Aglaid asked her to marry him. But Justina answered:

My fiance is Christ. I serve Him and for His sake I keep clean. And He protects both my soul and body from all filth.

Aglaid, overcome with passion, wanted to kidnap the girl by force. He persuaded several reckless youths. They ambushed Justina on her way to the church, seized her and dragged her into the house of Aglaid. Justina began to shout loudly and beat the kidnappers. Neighbors ran out of their houses and recaptured the girl from the kidnappers. Aglaid considered himself offended. He came to Cyprian and asked him for help, promising a large payment. Cyprian assured that the girl would soon look for Aglaid herself.

The young man left hopeful, and Cyprian brought one of the unclean spirits. Cyprian was sure that this demon would be able to inflame Justina's heart with passion.

The demon promised to fulfill this, and said proudly:

For me, this is not a difficult task - to infect a girl with an impure passion. I have repeatedly shaken cities, ruined houses, performed paricides and infanticides, planted enmity and great anger among people, and taught many chaste people to live according to the lusts of the flesh.

He gave Cyprian a vessel with a potion and ordered that Justina's house be sprinkled from it. Cyprian gave the drug to Aglaid, Aglaid sprinkled the house, and at night the demon entered there to incline the soul of Justina to the slavery of passions.

Justina at this time stood in prayer. She suddenly heard a storm of bodily lust in her body. She realized that this was a devilish delusion, and began to pray to Christ:

Save your sheep, Good Shepherd, and do not give it to the beast that wants to devour me. Grant me victory over the evil lust of my flesh.

Justina prayed with all her being - and the demon fled from her in disgrace. Passion left the girl, and the shamed demon came to Cyprian.

- I could not overcome her, because I saw a sign on her, which I was afraid of, - said the demon to the magician.

Cyprian then sent a more vicious demon to Justina. But Justina took on difficult feats. She wore a sackcloth and strictly fasted. And the second demon, as well as the first, had no success.

Then Cyprian called one of the demonic princes. He took the form of a woman, entered Justina and began to talk to her about marriage. The demonic prince said that the Holy Scripture glorifies marriage because it was established by God Himself.

Justina recognized the deceiver. She overshadowed herself with the sign of the Cross of the Lord and turned her whole heart to Christ. The demonic prince disappeared and appeared to Cyprian.

Can it be that you, demonic prince, cannot overcome the girl? Cyprian asked.

We cannot look at the Sign of the Cross, - the unclean spirit answered, - It, like fire, scorches us.

Such is your strength that even a weak maiden overcomes you,” Cyprian said in great anger.

Then the demonic prince assumed the form of Justina and came to Aglaid to console him. But as soon as Aglaid uttered the name of the girl, the demonic prince disappeared. The very name of Justina became terrible for the demons.

Cyprian turned Aglaid into a bird so that he could enter the house of Justina. But as soon as Justina looked out the window, the demon got scared and left Aglaid, and he ended up on the edge of the roof, and did not break only because Justina's prayer saved him. Cyprian himself turned - now into a woman, then into a bird, but the power left the magician, as soon as he reached the house of Justina. He brought all sorts of disasters on the house of Justina, her relatives, and struck her with a serious illness.

The mother wept over the girl, but she comforted her with the words of the prophet David: "I will not die, but I will live, and let us do the works of the Lord."

Cyprian, continuing to be spiteful, brought serious illnesses to the city. There were rumors that the priest was taking revenge on Justina for refusing to marry Aglaid. Citizens urged the girl not to oppose the priest, but she replied that the disasters would soon end. Through her prayer, the diseases in the city ceased, and all the sick recovered. Many people believed in Christ, and over the recently terrible magician Cyprian - they openly laughed.

But Cyprian was convinced that there is no power that could overcome the power of the Cross of the Lord and the Name of Christ.

Now I understand that you are a nonentity, Cyprian said to the devil. The devil began to beat the former sorcerer. Cyprian then exclaimed:

God of Justina, help me!

He signed himself with the Cross - and the devil bounced off like an arrow shot from a bow.

He no longer dared to approach Cyprian, frightened by the Name of God.

Cyprian burned all his witchcraft books and was baptized. Justina thanked God for the conversion of Cyprian.

Bishop Anfim, seeing Cyprian's great devotion to the Christian faith, accepted him into the church clergy. Soon Cyprian became a bishop, and Justina became a deaconess.

In 268, Cyprian and Justina were executed for confessing their faith and were included in the host of martyrs for Christ.

... I want to hear the opinion of the pagans (and not only them).

It is good to confess the Lord and sing to Your name, O Most High, To proclaim Your mercy in the morning and Your truth every night, On a ten-stringed psalter, with singing, on the harp. For You, O Lord, have made me glad with Your work, and I will admire the works of Your hands. How majestic are Your works, O Lord! Wonderfully deep are Your thoughts! A foolish man will not know, and a foolish man will not understand. While sinners have grown like grass, and all those who do iniquity have appeared to perish for ever and ever, You are the Most High forever, O Lord! For behold, Thy enemies, O Lord, for, behold, Thy enemies shall perish, and all those who do iniquity shall be scattered, And my horn shall be exalted like that of a unicorn, and my old age shall be anointed with fat oil. And my eye will look at my enemies, and my ear will hear about the evil ones rising up against me. The righteous will flourish like a date and multiply like a cedar in Lebanon. Planted in the house of the Lord, they will flourish in the courts of our God, They will multiply even in honest old age and be blessed. Let them proclaim that the Lord our God is righteous, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

92. On the day before the Sabbath, when the earth was populated. Praise song. David.

The Lord reigned, clothed in splendor, the Lord was clothed with strength and girded himself, for he established the universe, which will be immovable. From time immemorial Your throne has been prepared: You have existed from time immemorial. The rivers have lifted up, O Lord, the rivers have lifted up their voices, The rivers will raise their waves high, from the noisy movement of many waters: Marvelous are the high waves of the sea, marvelous is the Lord in the highest, Thy Revelations are very true. Your house, O Lord, is worthy of holiness for many days.

93. Psalm of David. On the fourth (day) of the week.

God of Vengeance The Lord, the God of Vengeance has come. Arise, Judge of the earth, repay the proud! How long will sinners, O Lord, how long will sinners boast? Will they utter and speak lies, will all those who commit iniquity speak? They have humiliated Your people, O Lord, and offended Your heritage, They killed the widow and the orphan and killed the stranger, And they said: “The Lord will not see, nor will the God of Jacob recognize.” Come to your senses, foolish people, and fools, finally understand! He who has formed an ear does not hear? Or does He who created the eye not see? Shall not He who teaches the nations rebuke, He who teaches man understanding? The Lord knows the thoughts of people that they are vain. Blessed is the man whom You instruct, O Lord, and teach from Your law, that he may remain meek from the day of calamity until a pit is dug for the sinner. For the Lord will not reject His people and leave His inheritance until righteousness returns to judgment, (and also) all who hold on to it, the upright in heart. Who will rise up for me against the evil ones? Or who will stand with me against the perpetrators of iniquity? If the Lord had not helped me, my soul would soon have settled in hell. When I said, “My foot has shaken,” then Your mercy, Lord, helped me. With the multiplication of my illnesses in my heart, Your comforts rejoiced my soul. Let not the throne of iniquity be in You, which creates a burden contrary to Your command: They will persecute the soul of the righteous and judge innocent blood. But the Lord was my refuge, and my God my sure help. And the Lord will reward them for their iniquity, and the Lord our God will destroy them because of their wickedness.

Glory:

94. Laudatory song. David. Not inscribed among the Jews.

Come, let us rejoice in the Lord, let us exclaim to God our Savior. Let us stand before Him in confession and in psalms we exclaim to Him, For God is great is the Lord and the King is great over all the earth, In His hand are all the ends of the earth, and the tops of His mountains, For His is the sea, and He created it, and the dry land of the hand It was created. Come, let us worship and fall down before Him, and weep before the Lord who created us. For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand. Now, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts, as (it was) when they were angry in the day of temptation in the wilderness, where (says the Lord) “your fathers tempted me, tempted me, and saw my works. For forty years I was indignant with that generation, and said, They always err in heart, but they themselves do not know My ways. Therefore I swore in my anger that they would not enter into my rest.”

95. Praise of David. When the house was being built, after the captivity. Not inscribed among the Jews.

Sing to the Lord a new song, sing to the Lord, all the earth! Sing to the Lord, bless His name, proclaim daily the gospel of His salvation. Proclaim His glory among the nations, His wonders among all nations. For the Lord is great and very glorious, terrible for all the gods. For all the gods of the Gentiles are demons, but the Lord created the heavens. Confession and beauty before Him, holiness and splendor in His sanctuary. Bring to the Lord, fatherlands of nations, give glory and honor to the Lord! Give the Lord the glory of His name, take sacrifices and enter into His courts. Worship the Lord in His holy court. Let the whole earth move before His presence! Tell the nations that the Lord has reigned and established the world, which will not move, He will judge the nations in righteousness. Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth rejoice, let the sea and that which fills it move! The fields and all that is in them will rejoice, then all the oak trees will rejoice From the presence of the Lord, for He is coming, for He is coming to judge the earth, to judge the world in righteousness and the nations in His truth.

96. Psalm of David. When his land was settled. Not inscribed among the Jews.

The Lord reigns, may the earth rejoice, may the numerous islands rejoice! Cloud and darkness are around him, righteousness and judgment are the foundation of his throne. The fire before Him will pass and burn around His enemies. Lightnings illuminated His universe, the earth saw and trembled. The mountains melted like wax at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the Lord of all the earth. The heavens have proclaimed His righteousness, and all the nations have seen His glory. Let all who worship idols, who boast in their idols, be put to shame. Worship Him, all His Angels! Zion heard and rejoiced, and the daughters of Judah rejoiced because of Thy judgments, O Lord. For You are the Lord Most High over all the earth, highly exalted above all the gods. Lovers of the Lord, hate evil! The Lord preserves the souls of His saints; He will deliver them from the hand of a sinner. The light shone on the righteous and the upright in heart - joy. Rejoice, righteous ones, in the Lord, and confess the memory of His holiness.

Glory:

97. Psalm of David.

Sing a new song to the Lord, for the Lord has done marvelous things: His right hand and His holy arm saved him. The Lord has revealed His salvation, He has revealed His righteousness before the nations. He remembered His mercy to Jacob and His truth to the house of Israel: All the ends of the earth saw the salvation of our God. Shout to God, all the earth, sing, and rejoice, and sing! Sing to the Lord on the harp, on the harp and with the voice of the psalm! With forged pipes and the sound of a horn trumpet, sound before the King - the Lord! Let the sea and what fills it, the universe and all who live in it, begin to move! Let the rivers clap their hands together, let the mountains rejoice in the presence of the Lord, for He is coming, for He is coming to judge the earth, to judge the world in righteousness and the nations in righteousness.

98. Psalm of David.

The Lord reigns: let the nations tremble! He who sits on the cherubim (reigned): let the earth move! The Lord in Zion is great and exalted above all people. Let them confess Your great name, for it is terrible and holy. And the court loves the honor of the Tsar. You have prepared righteousness, judgment and righteousness in Jacob You have done. Lift up the Lord our God and worship His footstool, for it is holy. Moses and Aaron in His priests, and Samuel in those who call on His name: they called on the Lord, and He listened to them. In a pillar of cloud he spoke to them, for they kept his commandments and his commandments which he had given them. Lord, our God! You listened to them. God! You were merciful to them and repaid for all their deeds. Lift up the Lord our God and worship on his holy mountain, for holy is the Lord our God.

99. Psalm of David. laudatory.

Shout out to God, all the earth! Work for the Lord with joy; enter before Him with joy. Know that the Lord - He is our God, He created us, and not we, we are His people and the sheep of His pasture. Enter into His gates with confession, into His courts with songs, confess to Him, praise His name. For the Lord is good, His mercy endures forever, and His truth is unto generation and generation.

100. Psalm of David.

I will sing mercy and judgment to Thee, O Lord! I sing and understand about the blameless path: when will you come to me? I walked in the innocence of my heart in the midst of my house, I did not place before my eyes the deeds of the lawless, those who commit crimes I hated. The obstinate heart was not close to me, I did not know the evil one deviating from me. Secretly slandering his neighbor - this I cast out; with a proud look and an insatiable heart - with this I did not eat. My eyes are (turned) on the faithful of the earth, to sit with me; who walks in an undefiled way, this one served me. Did not live inside my house acting proudly; whoever spoke the truth was not right before my eyes. In the morning I beat all the sinners of the earth, in order to destroy from the city of the Lord all those who do iniquity.

Glory:

According to the 13th kathisma, the Trisagion. Same troparia, tone 8:

With a compassionate eye, Lord, see my humility, as if little by little my life is dependent, and there is no salvation for me from works. For this I pray: with a compassionate eye, Lord, see my humility and save me.

Glory:

As if the Judge is coming, poke, soul, and think of a terrible day, for the court is merciless to those who have not done mercy. Cry out to Christ God: Knower of the heart, I have sinned, do not even judge before, have mercy on me.

And now: Your terrible and terrible, and unwashed judgment, Christ, in my mind I receive the day and the hour, I tremble, like a villain, having fierce deeds and deeds, even if I am diligently contributors. With the same fear, I fall to You, crying out painfully: through the prayers of You, O Merciful One, save me.

Lord, have mercy (40) and prayer:

Holy Lord, Who lives in the highest, and with Your all-seeing eye Look at all creation. We bow our souls and bodies to you, and we pray to you, Holy of Holies: stretch out your invisible hand from your holy dwelling, and bless us all: and if we sin against you, willingly and unwillingly, for God is Good and Lover of mankind, forgive us, grant us peace and good Yours. Yours is, to have mercy and save, our God, and we send glory to You, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever, and forever and ever, amen.

What spiritual forces claim to be worshiped instead of the Creator? Demons. They are presented by the gods as simply fallen spirits. The depravity of Krishna, his statements that he is the best in fraud, that the evil committed by his fans does not affect the subsequent fate indicates belonging to dark spirits.
