300 English words you need to know. Learning the first three hundred words

Why do you need English? Travel? For work? Read professional literature? Chat with friends in social networks? Did you know that all the different goals of language learning differ from each other only in terms of vocabulary? And the required minimum for communication in English is determined on average by 300-500 words.

At one of the webinars on studying English language The following statistics were given:

142 words - survival dictionary. Those. Knowing 142 words in the language of the host country, you can check into a hotel, eat, ask for directions, and buy the essentials. Only 142 words! Everyone can do it. Having learned this data, without a doubt, we can say that everyone can learn English on their own.

800 words is a conversational minimum, with which you can easily live in the country.

2-3 thousand words is a decent vocabulary, which is enough to study in English.

4-6 thousand words - you can work.

10 thousand words is the average vocabulary of a native speaker.

Where and how you learn your first three hundred words in English is up to you. As for the personal experience of the site’s author, I expanded my vocabulary with the help of the site Lingualeo, which allows you to form your own vocabulary and undergo training that allows you to memorize words “hard”. This was my choice; now many learning sites allow you to create your own personal dictionary - for example, Puzzle-English , Ororo.tv and others. There are no word workouts on these sites, but words are learned in context, which is also a very good way to remember them.

Another technique for memorizing unfamiliar words in English is associative method. Those. When you hear a new word, try to draw a picture in your head that will help you remember given words. For example, frog in English would be frog. What does frog look like? Well, for example, I had an association with a horn. So, imagine a frog with a horn on its head. The funnier and more absurd the association, the faster it will be remembered. While imagining the picture, repeat out loud: frog, frog, frog.

Many teachers conduct free webinars where they share their methods of memorizing words - these are webinars by Yana Grausova, who recommends having boxes for repeating words, Nikolai Yagodkin talks in detail at the webinar and even practices memorizing foreign words by association.

Of course, when we are not talking about survival vocabulary, vocabulary must be "strung" on grammar. But without a vocabulary, no grammar will save you. You can easily learn your minimum on your own, for example, with Yana Grausova, who in the videos below gives the first “lifeline” to those who are just starting to learn English. You can easily find the rest of the episodes on YouTube.
