Purpose and principle of operation of drying oil

The principle of operation is that most oils, upon contact with oxygen, heat and light, thicken very intensively, and a thin layer completely hardens. This is due to fatty acid glycerides, because their amount and the degree of iodine number (an indicator of the number of double bonds in the carbon chain) are directly proportional to the rate of setting of the agent. Linen and hemp compositions of drying oil Oksol (GOST 190–78) are most effective, since the oils of these plants have 80% and 70% of glycerides of linoleic and linolenic acids, respectively, and the iodine number exceeds 150.

It should be noted that in its natural form, any vegetable oil freezes for quite a long time, and in order to accelerate this property, it is subjected to heat treatment. When heated, the hardening-retarding substances decompose, and salts provoke rapid oxidation. In addition, special compounds are introduced that contribute to its rapid drying (driers). As a result, the film deposited on the surface becomes solid within 6 to 36 hours.

Types of drying oils and their features

There are several varieties. Natural 97% consist of plant oils (sunflower or flax), the rest is occupied by a desiccant. Their main purpose is to dilute paints and treat wooden surfaces in rooms. Such drying oils are divided into oxidized and polymerized. The latter have a darker color, and products treated with it age faster.

Characteristics of drying oil Oksol (GOST 190–78) practically do not differ from natural. It is applied to internal and external works. But the composition also includes a solvent, which gives a pungent odor. Also, this type is cheaper than the previous one. Drying oil Oksol is produced in two grades - "V" and "PV". The first are created on the basis of flax or hemp oils. To create the second, petroleum polymer resins and other technical oils are used. Therefore, when working with drying oil, especially the PV brand, you should be extremely careful, wear respirators and protective gloves.

Often Oksol is marked "combined", "composite" or "semi-natural", which once again proves its origin. But sometimes it makes a fundamental difference for those who care about composition. Combined Oksol received rapeseed oil as a natural component, while sunflower oil was mainly used for production. But the situation was complicated by the fact that the new component belongs to the class of non-drying ones. Then it was pre-oxidized, and as a result, the combined Oxol received the same characteristics as the original version of the composition.

In the broad sense of the word, combined drying oil is obtained by mixing oils of several plants or those that have undergone different processing, the addition of synthetic substances and a solvent is also allowed.. The use of this option is more common in the preparation of paints. Drying oil of several brands is produced. In the designation, the first is the letter "K", followed by a number. If an even number is indicated in the marking, then the mixture is used for interior work, and an odd number is used for painting outdoor objects.

The last type is synthetic compounds. The basis for paints is alkyd drying oil, its cost is much lower than oil, which is a definite plus. Another type is compositional compositions. Their quality is not high enough, and due to increased toxicity, use is limited only to outdoor work. When choosing synthetic drying oils, one should be extremely careful, since if at least a small deposit of natural oils is present in them, then the layer after painting may not dry out for a very long time. The presence of such inclusions can be determined visually. This mixture has a reddish tint and a black precipitate.

Drying oil Oksol (GOST 190–78) is characterized by the following properties. Due to the solvent, it has a pungent odor that does not disappear immediately. According to GOST 190–78, marking is carried out depending on the composition, for example, drying oil “B”, which has excellent properties, is made only from hemp and linseed oil. The acid number for type "B" is no more than 6 mg KOH/g, and for "PV" - 8 mg KOH/g. The exception is drying oil based on sunflower oil, in which case this figure can reach 10. It is unacceptable for the sediment to exceed 1%, transparency must be complete. The mass fraction of non-volatile substances ranges from 54.5 to 55.5%, regardless of the brand. Drying oil Oksol is stored mainly in metal containers, but it is strictly forbidden to open it with tools that give a spark. What is drying oil and its application

It is made from vegetable oils that have been thermally processed or alkyd resins. It necessarily includes a special substance that significantly speeds up the drying time - a desiccant.

There are different types and brands. Some of them can only be used indoors, while others are better outdoors. But how to choose such a composition so that both costs are reduced and technical characteristics are not lost?

Types and brands of oil drying oils

Oil formulations are produced by filtration and special heat treatment from vegetable oils. Desiccant is added to the resulting composition in a small amount. They can be salts of various metals, such as manganese, iron, lithium, zirconium, cobalt, and others.

If the composition of the desiccant contains compounds of several metals, then the rate of drying of drying oil increases significantly.

In oil drying oils, the content of desiccants is insignificant, since with their excess, the coating darkens very quickly and becomes brittle, i.e. starts to break down.

Subdivided into:

natural. GOST 7931-76, natural drying oil (we carefully study its technical characteristics before buying), consists of plant oils (flax or sunflower). These oils in it up to 97%. The remaining 3% is occupied by a desiccant. It is divided into polymerized and oxidized (oxidized). In oxidized drying oils, the color is slightly darker than in polymerized ones, and the surfaces covered with them age faster. It has a blackish-brown color. It is an opaque liquid with a thick oily consistency with a slight odor. It is used to prepare thickly ground paints, as well as to impregnate all wood products inside buildings;


drying oil oxol, its GOST 190 78 (technical characteristics are indicated on the label) - this drying oil is different from natural in that it contains such a solvent as white spirit. In oxoli oils 55%, desiccant - 5%, the rest is white spirit. It has a very strong and unpleasant smell, which gives it a solvent. It remains on the treated surface for quite a long time. Outwardly and in its properties, oxol almost does not differ from natural drying oil, but is much cheaper than it. Oksol is produced in grades PV and V. They differ in that “V” uses hemp or flax oil, and “PV” uses other oils, including petroleum polymer resins (petropolymer drying oil is a by-product of the petrochemical industry). When using the PV brand, gloves and a respirator must be worn. Drying oil grade B is not used for painting floors. Oksol can be used both inside the building and outside it;

drying oil combined. It is obtained by mixing and oxidizing oils from various plants or differently processed, with the addition of a solvent or synthetic drying oils. Drying time is determined according to GOST 19007. Drying oil combined is used mainly for the preparation of paints, and not for their dilution. This type comes in several grades: K 2, K 4, K 3, K 5, K 12. Even numbers are used for indoor work, and odd numbers can be used outside. For example, combined drying oil (grade K 3) consists of a small amount of desiccant, solvent (usually white spirit) and drying oils. It is transparent and yellowish in color. Complete drying occurs within 24 hours. It is recommended to use in small portions, as it quickly forms a film. It is used for the preparation of any oil paints and for the impregnation of wood parts, for mixing plaster. Drying oil combined (grade K 2) is slightly different in color from K 3, it is slightly darker. It is used in the same way as K 3, but for interior work.

Their basis is synthetic substances, such as by-products of the processing of shale, oil, gas and other substances with the addition of the necessary components. There is no GOST for them; TU is used instead.

Alkyd drying oils used as a basis for the preparation of paints. They are cheaper than oil ones, which often becomes a decisive factor in their favor. Composite drying oils rarely used in the production of varnishes and paints, since the resulting coating is of low quality. Due to some toxicity and pungent odor, they are used outdoors.

Synthetic drying oils differ from natural ones in a long drying time, they do not have color. But be careful when acquiring such a composition: it may not be without surprises. If there is even a small amount of fuse (vegetable oil sediment), then the drying time of the paint, of which it is a component, can stretch for years. Moreover, such paint may not dry at all. The presence of fuse can be determined by the characteristic reddish color and the presence of a dark precipitate.

  • Oily natural drying oils are quite expensive, they are used indoors to coat wooden products and as part of oil paints. Outside, products coated with such compounds will have to be processed again and again, which is very impractical.
  • Oksol is cheaper, but it also protects the surface from wood pests worse, although it forms a strong, waterproof film. The cheapest oxol is made with sunflower oil. It can be used inside and outside the building. As an alternative - combined.
  • Synthetic - an option for economical, but they have a very unpleasant and harmful smell to human health, so they can only be used outside, cover surfaces in non-residential buildings. When using them, gloves, an apron, a respirator are required.

The solvent content in the finished Oksol solution is not more than 40%, and the remaining 5% is the mass fraction of the desiccant. The solvent, which is part of Oksoli, gives the whole mixture a characteristic unpleasant and pungent odor, which persists for some time even after drying. This drying oil, due to the presence of various components in the composition, is significantly cheaper than natural drying oil, but practically does not differ from it either in appearance or in properties.

The characteristics of drying oil depend on the vegetable oil used in the composition, it is divided into two subspecies. Higher quality drying oil is made using linseed oil. This coating has hardness, water resistance, elasticity and has maximum durability. Accordingly, cheaper drying oil contains other oils (sunflower, soybean, corn and others).

Characteristics of Oksoli

Depending on the components used, Oksol grades V and PV. Drying oil grade B is produced using hemp or linseed oil. It is used in the paint and varnish industry in the production of oil paints, as well as for the dilution of various thick paints, which are needed in interior and exterior painting work.

Drying oil of the PV brand is based on sunflower, safflower, grape, corn or other oils, and it is also possible to partially replace these oils with petroleum polymer resins. For the production of drying oil of this brand, oils are not used, the use of which is possible in the food industry.

Oksol is used for special impregnation of various wooden surfaces or for processing plaster before painting. Olif Oksol, the technical characteristics of which are set by the relevant GOST, dries quickly (no more than a day), has excellent hardness and creates a gloss effect on the surface.

Memo for working with drying oil Oksol

The solution should be applied to a surface that has been previously dried, as well as cleaned of dust and dirt. All work is carried out at a temperature not lower than +10 °C. Relative humidity should not exceed 80%. At this temperature, Oksol dries for no more than a day. If the solution has thickened, then it can be diluted with nefras, turpentine or white spirit, as well as their mixtures.

This material is a flammable and toxic liquid which is hazardous at elevated temperatures. All these characteristics are due to the properties of the components (oils and solvents) that make up the composition.

Open flames are prohibited in rooms where this liquid is used or stored. Electrical equipment and lighting sources must be explosion-proof. Drying oil itself should be stored in a carefully and tightly closed container, protected from direct sunlight, as well as various moisture.

During the application of this liquid, the room where this occurs must be well ventilated. When to use drying oil Oksol PV, the manufacturer recommends protecting the respiratory system with a respirator, and exposed skin with overalls and rubber gloves.

Composite drying oil

Composite drying oil is the cheapest drying oil with a characteristic pungent odor. It does not have a GOST number, so the composition of such a substance is not regulated at the legislative level, and production is carried out exclusively according to technical specifications.

  1. Composite drying oils, as a rule, contain various chemical components, in particular, products of the petrochemical industry that are harmful and toxic to the human body (for example, petroleum polymer resins).
  2. Therefore, such compositions are strictly prohibited for indoor use.
  3. The smell of composite drying oil remains for a long time even with good ventilation in the room. this is the cheapest drying oil with a characteristic pungent odor.

Features of the use of drying oil "Oksol"

Drying oil "Oksol" is a quick-drying substance that has an increased hardness and forms a glossy coating on the surface of the material processed by it. It penetrates well into the pores of the tree, thereby emphasizing its structure.

  • Drying oil "Oksol" is for sale in containers of various capacities, completely ready for use.
  • It is necessary to apply such a substance on a dry surface, which, if necessary, is sanded in advance and thoroughly cleaned of dust or grease. Only after that do they move on to polishing.
  • First, the composition is well mixed, if the drying oil has thickened during storage, it can be diluted with white spirit, nefras, and also, if desired, a solvent for varnishes and paints (oil and enamels).
  • The drying oil is applied in a thin layer with a brush or a special roller. At the same time, all work must be carried out in a room that is well ventilated with an air temperature of at least 15 degrees Celsius and a relative humidity of 80%.

  • The drying time of drying oil "Oksol" is approximately 24 hours, so the interval between each subsequent layer should be approximately a day.
  • The rest of the unused drying oil can be stored for a year in a tightly closed container. For this, a dark, dry place inaccessible to children is suitable.
  • To protect your hands during the polishing process, it is recommended to use rubber gloves. It is also important to avoid getting drying oil in the eyes. If drying oil has got on open areas of the body, then they are cleaned with rags or a rag soaked in vegetable oil. Then thoroughly wash everything with warm soapy water.
