Also, the UPS of a gas boiler can be divided according to the method of installing batteries: external and internal. The latter are similar to computer uninterruptible power supplies, they are small in size (often wall-mounted UPS) and at the same time have little autonomy. Basically, boiler UPSs are available with external battery connection, they have a long operating time and, as a rule, the ability to increase capacity if necessary.

Batteries for such UPSs are placed on shelves near the main unit.

How to choose?

Criterias of choice:

  1. Only pure sine wave output. The boiler electronics, as well as the asynchronous motors of the circulation pumps, are only designed for sinusoidal alternating voltage. Many computer UPSs and some cheap boiler uninterruptibles can produce a square wave or "modified sine wave", resulting in shortened electronics life, humming, and failure of pumps.
  2. Power. Determine which heating devices will be connected to the uninterruptible boiler for the boiler (pumps, lighting, etc.) and what their power is (indicated on the instrument case or in the instructions). We add up all the obtained power values, add 5-10% and get the required UPS power for the boiler.
  3. Battery capacity. It depends on it how long the gas boiler will work from the UPS in the event of a power failure. The battery life can be calculated using the formula: T [h] = C [A*h] * V [V] * 0.85 / P [W]. Here: C is the total capacity in ampere-hours (A * h, Ah), added up when the batteries are connected in parallel; V - voltage in volts (V), added up when batteries are connected in series; 0.85 - typical efficiency for UPS; P is the total power of the connected equipment in watts, calculated according to paragraph 2.
  4. The type of batteries used. Do not use car acid batteries: they are not designed for buffer operation in an uninterruptible power supply for the boiler, they can be a fire hazard. Choose AGM or gel (GEL) batteries.
