On October 28, 2017, the national holiday Efimy Autumn is celebrated. On this day the church remembers Saint Euthymius of Thessalonica (birth name - Nikita).

According to legend, he was born in the 9th century into a simple Christian family in Palestine. By the will of his parents, he married early. At the age of 18, he took monastic vows and, leaving his wife and daughter, came to the monastery on Mount Olympus, where he was named Euthymius and sent to the monastery of Pisidion.

In 858, Euthymius took a vow of monk and began to live in solitude with the hermit Joseph on Mount Athos. In 863 he accomplished the feat of stylite life. After Joseph's death, he returned to Thessaloniki, restored the destroyed monastery of St. Andrew and created a monastic community. Later he founded a convent, to which some of his relatives went, following his preaching.

In 889 he went to Palestine, where he died.

People believed that Efimiya was beginning to experience an evil spirit that was trying to interfere with women during housework. To save yourself from misfortune, you need to make the sign of the cross and read a prayer to Saint Euthymius, but you can completely drive out the kikimora only with the arrival of spring, by performing a special ritual.

According to signs, if a cloud floats above the rising sun on Euphemia Autumn, then do not expect good weather.

If the sun is surrounded by red circles at sunset, then the weather will be frosty all week.

If there are small circles in the clear evening sky next to the moon, then frost will strike. If these circles are reddish in color and have an unclear shape, then expect snowfall and windy weather.

Memorial Day of the Icon of the Molchenskaya Mother of God

This holiday is celebrated on the first day of the month of October. This icon is located in the city of Putivl, in a convent and is the main local shrine. An image of the Mother of God miraculously appeared in the Molche swamp on the day when the appearance of this blessing is now celebrated. The beekeeper who found her heard a booming voice that commanded to build a temple in honor of the Mother of God at this place. When people came to this place, the face of the saint shone with divine light.

This icon survived the looting of the monastery and the move to a new church. Thanks to the caring hands of church ministers, it has survived to this day and still gives people divine grace.

Conception of the glorious Prophet, Forerunner and Baptist of the Lord John

This significant event falls on October 6. The prophet Malachi predicted that before the appearance of the Savior, his Forerunner would appear to the people. As a result, the Palestinian priest Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth prayed for a long time for a child, but God still did not hear his prayer. Having already reached a fairly advanced age, entering the church before a blessing for the people, the face of the Archangel Gabriel appeared to him, who promised him a child. He forced Zacharias, who did not believe, to become numb until the birth of the Forerunner. This is the history of this holiday.

Day of St. Sergius of Radonezh

This holiday is celebrated October 8. The founder of the Russian Enlightenment and Renaissance. The engine of culture of the second half of the 14th century, a devout Christian - all this is a description of St. Sergius of Radonezh. He was marked by the Lord from the very conception, but there were no concessions in his upbringing. That is why he did so much for the Russian people and our culture in the post-Tatar yoke. Accompanying Jesus everywhere, including in the days of his death, he was named by him the son of the Mother of God. Caring for the latter until her death, he worried about her every second and never left Jerusalem.

After the death of the Mother of God, John went to Asia Minor, preaching Christianity. Having overcome many mortal dangers, he was able to write the Book of Revelations about the Apocalypse. He was the chosen one of the Lord and carried his faith through many difficulties. That is why the day of his death was elevated to church holidays.

Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The main church holiday of the autumn month of October falls on 14th. On this day, according to the information in the Great Four Menaions of St. Andrew the Fool, during the night vigil, the Great Mother of God descended to the worshipers, accompanied by the forerunner John and John the Theologian, as well as many other saints. That night she gave grace to the temple, blessed people and humanity.

On this day, the visit of the Virgin Mary to the sinful earth is celebrated. The essence of this vision was as follows: the city in which people were praying was besieged, and the appearance of the Mother of God forced the attackers to retreat. There is a lot of controversy about the creation of this holiday, and this issue has also been raised many times at church or scientific conferences. There are quite a large number of versions and disagreements regarding this, but everyone agrees on one thing - this is a holy day for every Orthodox Christian.

Memorial Day of the Holy Fathers of the VII Ecumenical Council

This significant church holiday is celebrated October 24. On this day, at the Ecumenical Council it was decided whether icons should be venerated or whether they should not be elevated to the level of a shrine. The Holy Fathers at this time decided that the painted faces of saints were also important for faith, and therefore sacred for everyone who believes in the Lord. In addition, on this day many other fundamental issues of faith were resolved, which subsequently regulate the life of Orthodoxy, church activities and the daily behavior of everyone under the wing of the Almighty.

Also on this day the day of remembrance of the Council of the Venerable Optina Elders is celebrated.

Observance of Orthodox church holidays is not just archaic rituals. This is an opportunity to cultivate the spirit to pray to God and become a good Christian. Remember the Almighty and live piously.

National holidays October 28, 2017

  • Efimy Osenniy. The national holiday “Efimy Autumn” is celebrated on October 28 (according to the old style - October 15). In the church calendar, this is the date of memory of St. Euthymius of Thessalonica. Other names of the holiday: “Lenyanitsy”, “Luki”, “Efim”, “Efim the beekeeper”. Nikita (this name was given to the future saint at birth) was born into a Christian family, at the insistence of his parents he married early, but already at the age of 18, leaving his wife and daughter, he took monastic vows in a monastery on Mount Olympus. After some time, Euthymius became a schema-monk, went to Athos and settled there with the hermit Joseph, with whom he competed in mortification. After the death of his comrade, Euthymius founded a monastic community near Thessaloniki, restoring the ruins of the ancient monastery of St. Andrew. They said about this day in Rus': “Efimy closes the roots of grass and trees with the ground with the cold, covers every insect in the withered grass, brings sleep to nature.” It was a correct observation: winter was approaching, and all plants and animals were preparing for its arrival. Winter was gaining strength, and with it, unclean spirits became more active, for example, kikimora, which did not dare to harm people in the summer. According to legend, with Efimiya she began to interfere with women and girls in any endeavor: she tangled yarn, tore fabric, broke pots. They said that you can see a kikimora only in one situation - if it sits down at the weaving mill to ruin the weaver’s work. In this case, it was necessary to make the sign of the cross over the evil spirits and ask Efimy for help. However, the kikimora could be completely kicked out of the house only with the arrival of spring, after performing a certain ritual. Despite the tricks of the undead, the peasant women continued to do household chores. First of all, flax was crushed and ruffled and yarn was prepared. The girls took on this work with all care and diligence. The quality of the raw materials will be the same as the final result of the work, that is, the linen that comes off the loom. On this day, they held a show: they took frayed flax out into the street and looked at who had it thinner and softer. The men felted felt boots for the winter, repaired agricultural implements, repaired sleighs, and in warm areas they removed the last hives from the omshaniks. Therefore, another name for this day is Efimy the beekeeper.

In China, as well as in many other countries that use the traditional Chinese lunar calendar, the Chongyang Festival, also known as the Double Nine Festival, is celebrated on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month. This holiday has ancient roots and traditions. According to Chinese beliefs, the number "9" symbolizes yang, and double nine (the ninth day of the ninth month) has very strong yang energy. Such a day is potentially dangerous for people, so to prevent possible troubles, several important rituals should be performed on this day. Thus, during the Chongyang Festival, it is necessary to climb a high mountain, drink some chrysanthemum wine or chrysanthemum tea, and wear dogwood branches. And on this day a special five-layer cake should be served, decorated with a flag, which symbolizes the dogwood.

Orthodox fasts in September

In the first autumn month there are no multi-day fasts, but there are one-day ones, namely on the 6th, 8th, 11th, 13th, 15th, 20th, 22nd, 27th and 29th. The rules for such fast days do not differ from the rules established for long fasts, such as the Great Fast, the Assumption Fast, etc.

To cleanse your body and soul, you need to give up most of your usual foods, spend time in prayer and repent of your sins.

What food is prohibited on fasting days?

With the beginning of fasting, dairy products, meat dishes, fatty and rich foods are prohibited. On some days it is forbidden to eat fish. But you shouldn’t be upset about such excesses, because in our time a lot of tasty and healthy dishes have been invented.

Even the managers of restaurants and cafes take into account the peculiarities of fasting days, including in their menus dishes for those who decide to follow the nutritional rules established by the church.

More about holidays

  • Beheading of John the Baptist. This is one of the great holidays in Orthodoxy. The events that brought it to us took place during the New Testament. It was on this day that John the Baptist was executed, the man who baptized the Son of God Jesus Christ in the waters of the Jordan River.
  • Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Another one dedicated to the Mother of God. Christians love him and try to remember him every year. This twelfth celebration was established in honor of the birth of the Virgin Mary, who appeared in the righteous family of Anna and Joachim. According to legend, a married couple could not conceive a child for a long time and frantically prayed to the Lord to give them a child. Their request was heard and soon the beautiful Virgin Mary was born. Today, this church celebration personifies prosperity in the family and love for one’s neighbor. Many associate it with the end of the harvest and the arrival of cold weather.

  • Exaltation of the Holy Cross. This spiritual holiday was born thanks to the excavations of St. Helena, who tirelessly searched for the grotto in which the Son of God rested. The queen’s efforts were crowned with success and already in the fourth century the burial place of Jesus Christ was discovered. The cross was taken out and a beautiful temple was built in his honor. They say that the authenticity of the cross was determined with the help of a sick woman: after she touched the cross of the Lord, healing occurred. Today, all believers try to come to church and stand before the icon of Jesus in order to pray for the health of their loved ones and the peace of those who have long left this world.

All listed in our calendar are capable of healing a wounded soul, showing the way to a lost wanderer and solving a complex problem.

On such days, you need to turn to the Lord more often, tell him about all your experiences. He will never leave his Children in trouble and will definitely come to help if he sees that it is really needed.

In 858, Euthymius took vows of a monk and became intkbbee live alone with the hermit Joseph on Mount Athos.
